All good. Wasnt directly critiquing your post, was just adding a bit of hope on Finn, and reflecting on past pre-season training updates, and what he may be able to show in pending ones...
I really hope he gets to show us his potential this year too. An uninterrupted pre-season will definitely help him. I loved his tackling in the Bombers match.

Don't disagree with any of that, but when a mid goes out, there is a spot for a mid to come in - or alternatively if you don't have one that you think is knocking the door down, you can switch blokes around and bring in a different player type - which is what we did on several occassions this year.

We were able to do that because we carried extra mids in the side all season filling flanks. Adams, Lipinski, Crisp, Pendlebury, NDaicos all played time outside the midfield. They’re already in the side so obviously had first crack at more midfield time rather than bring in another mid and leave them on the flanks. They move into the midfield and replacing them with an actual flanker is logical. Ryan, Bianco, Harrison, and Ginnivan all more obvious replacements as they’re flankers or in Harrison’s case playing as a flanker. All also pushing their cases with good VFL form. As I said, no vacancy for Macrae. As others have also highlighted, he himself was injured for a few weeks during some of those player absences.

Did anyone get to training today?

I got there about 12 and everyone had left. Saw Beggy and someone else getting into their car as I arrived.

The fences are up around Vic Park, so can presume either it was a lock in .... or lock in sessions are about to begin. I don't think there are any other events happening that would require fences up (but could be wrong).

Different to our Home Training Session

Week 2. Pre-season training. Monday Dec 4

The morning started out interesting -- Leaving home and walking to vic park, I get to the lights near johnston st and realised I had my top inside out..
So what is the right thing to do? Keep walking, pop into the old turnstiles at vic park, throw off my top and turn it the right side, and put it back on.
I almost asked some girls to keep watch while I change haha, but nobody was looking and it was all corrected in quick flash.

Some of the boys were on the ground when I did arrive, it was half the squad and I started to question where everyone else was, but after this group finished some handballs, the rest of the players came out of the race; and things began.

Playing squad. Minus Cox (who is in the US, about to come back tomorrow) and Jordy, who was absent for personal reasons.

  • IQ
  • Elliott
  • Mitchell
  • Jdaicos

* Maynard did a couple of the pre-session handball drills, with one hand... as his other is still in the brace.
After that, he just was on the bike as there isn't too much he could do atm.

Darcy Cameron did some running mostly this morning, as he ramps up his rehab to whatever issue he has been dealing with.
Also did some boxing with a staff member, and some rowing on a rowing machine they bought with them.

Others in the rehab group include Jamie Elliott, who is working through the surgery cleanout of his shoulder. But no strapping, just did some running.

There was a bunch on light duties to start off with. Who did some running sessions. Including Darcy Moore.

There was some shuttle runs and other sprints this morning, as the S&C staff ran the players rampard in the heat. There wasn't too much ball drills; mainly some pressure stuff, handballing in tight situations; then they did... I suppose you could call it match sim like.. but there was no centre bounce stuff. It more so that play started at one end and moved freely around the ground.

Johnson did some ruck work with Teakle and Begg, and Steene for a time. teakle mostly played up forward, which he was practicing shots oin goal toward the end of the session.

Roughy did some marking drills with Eyre, Murphy and Harry late as in the session once the main part of training had finished. They were free to do their own thing before going inside.

Lippa did roll his ankle. Went inside the rooms for a bit, then came out and tried to do a running session, but I suppose it was a bit uncomforable. They ended up putting some ice on his ankle, but he was walking freely; didn't seem to concerned about it.

Reef did a running session with WHE, and he actually did very well in keeping ahead of Willbur, who is a good runner in general, so hopefully this indicates his tank is slowly improving. I have seen an improvement in his running this pre-season so far, so hopefully that keep continuing.

Solid session, which seemed to be skills based.

Onto wednesday we go.

Going off a cupla vids.

I'm guessing Teakle sprayed number 2's?

WHE looked like he was coasting, Reefer looked puffed.

Looking at Finlay he still doesn’t look like he has put enough size and muscle on to play the only role suited to his skills and athletic profile (inside mid)

Not sure if it is a lack of time and effort in the weights room, or just his body wont put on the bulk he needs

Isn’t the time for adding muscle coming up? I didn’t think they usually came back at this time of the year with much more size. But I could be wrong.

Genes might have a bit to do with it, his brother has never been what you'd call solidly built and he's done ok as both an inside and an outside mid. Fin might always be one of those more wiry players but that doesn't mean he can't build sufficient upper body strength to compete at the stoppages.

Apologies if I missed it, but do we still do the obligatory time trials? I thought we used to do one with the 1-4 year players and then one with everybody.
We did one last pre-season. Nick won it.
But so far... there hasn't been one as of yet. They have done some shuttle runs.

Thanks for your fantastic coverage of these training sessions. Can you tell me anything about Jasper Maher? Pommy in Oz seems to think we will pick him up as a McStay replacement. When and how would we do that?
