Swoopy beat me to it.

Big thing from training being that Ed Allan seems to have arrived as a cardio beast. Beating Lippa and Nick Daicos in the beep test, plus all other mids (sidey and pendles missing)

Harry D also v impressive, coming in top 8 or so… beating Mitchell and Jakob Ryan.

Go pies
First look at TJ as well, and whilst a v limited sample, his skills looks pretty impressive for a guy who has only played seriously for a couple of years. Beautiful skills and a genuine athlete, and looks to have bags of potential.

Harry D also has an impress build - no surprises, and it won’t be his physical maturity that will keep him out of the side. Has every chance to pinch a game or two this year methinks.

Eyre gassed out relatively early in the beep test, whilst the 10 year old kid that joined the test actually lasted longer than Begg, though he and Bobby still look much fitter than 12 months ago.

Pre-season training: Saturday January 13th.

No sidey or Shultz that I could see. No Steene either.

Howe and Peddles didn't do the yoyo test. Too old for that stuff lol

The session went for over 2 hours. Reckon it didn't end til 12pm or longer, I was on my way out when I bumped into Eyre's dad again, so got chatting to him for a while.

They got started on some drills once the warm up drills were done. They go through the fundamentals first, which contains some ball work, marking and then into the kicking drill they do.

Then they split into line groups. There was some stoppage stuff and then some 1v1 fight drills they do at either end. Since I was sitting near the river end, I saw the tall defenders and forwards get to work.

There was some match play stuff, which is always exciting. This will continue to ramp up in the weeks to come. But they did seem to mix up the roles.
Saw Elliott and Jamie on the wing.
Reef in the middle.
Allan in the middle
Howe down forward
Pendles on the wing

There was lots of competitiveness and skills were sharp

The Yoyo test. IQ won it, with Allan with 2nd. Before then it was Nick, Lippa, Markov, and a few others that dropped out.
Moore was the first to drop out, followed by Hill, Johnson and Reef. The latter I thought did a lot better compared to last year.
Then it was some more taller guys in Eyre, the rucks, and Sofonidis, who for their size, I thought lasted pretty well.

Darcy was mentoring Eyre after he produced a nice spoil on the wing, giving him some tips and techniques.

Sullivan produced a nice goal from a stoppage up forward when there was a fair bit of congestion
Ed looked strong and big, ran down Nick and got a HTB, they all got around him for that.
Jordy looked slick
Lippa was clean with the ball
DC and Cox took turns up forward and both took some really nice grabs
Richards did some nice things

Teakle did some ruck craft from stoppage up forward, then kicked a goal from around stoppage.

Dean had some composure with ball in hand.
crisp was in defence and Mitchell spent time in the forward line. With Reef and Allan in the middle.

It was a really solid session.

Looks like Carmichael is still in non contact. Must be from that concussion he sustained pre-xmas. Concerning its still lingering.

Not more size, more levitation it seems.

His training progression plan probably has him running on top of the wet blue stuff behind him next...

...in the gospel according to Jen2310

Eyre seems very light on for size and bulk

Call me strange but I like my key position types to do big man stuff well and have the size and muscle to battle against seasoned opponents

Good movement and kicking skills are nice benefits to have but I worry about his size

Given McStay’s injury I agree we have to list him but there are concerns there

Dustin Fletcher did OK

Dustin is a super nice guy. I'd meet up with him once every year at the primary school where I worked.
He'd stay an extra hour and just chat. Yeah he was pretty lean standing next to me. 😅

Rehab.

His dad seems to think he is a late developer physically, so will take some time. And he's only ever had 2 pre-seasons in an afl system both of them with injuries.
He's also just turned 21, we know how big boys can take time. But he hasn't let his frame stop him from competing.

So at this stage he would be more of that intercept marking defender and not a lockdown defender on the opposition key forwards?
In the VFL last season, his marking was the feature of his game. He seemed to get into the right positions early, which shows he can read the play well and was very good marking above his head.

In the VFL he was played at FB and as a lockdown, he is good at the 1 percenters that you don't get a stat for, such as spoiling. I was chatting to his dad about this, how he thinks its ridiculous is that you get a stat for picking up the ball and a kick out, but not for a team effort like spoiling in a contest.
While he has some physically developing to go until he is the finished product, it doesn't stop him from competing to the best of his ability.

At VFL level l knew he was playing key back, but at AFL level would he be more the intercept defender until he puts some size on?
I was really impressed with him at VFL level, and was hoping we would rookie list him the following season....

Yeah, reckon they could do that at afl level. Intercept until he puts on some size. Would be putting him in the deep end if he had to play on say Charlie Dixon at this point.

He's the youngest of the SSP's, and probably the most with the most potential and upside because of his late birthday.

Concerns over Eyre’s size?
Maybe Collingwood should cut him now.
Need someone like Dwayne the Rock Johnson, John Cena etc.
Why doesn’t Darcy Moore look more like He-Man?
Mick Martyn is not the modern key defender.
