The deadline will come quickly once we get to the end of the month.

I'm gonna do something different with my training report. Just might take a couple hours, but I'm working on something :D

I'd love to see McCreery in there too, but some say he's a bit soft.
I’d have to agree with that. Last year on at least a dozen occasions , when he tackled or bumped an opponent, they were able to get up again.

Not good enough😀

Can't believe they're still getting away with mentioning height!

Thoughts & prayers for all the players self-conscious of being too short or tall.

And while we're at it: do we really need to know their ages or star signs?
Or even their appearances? We should just have avatars where their heads should be along with their number. Make it purely about football and not some beauty pageant.

Or alternatively, they could have the photos of players with rough heads digitally enhanced so they all look like Brad Pitt,or any actor who’s considered hot these days.😉

What's more surprising.

A. Looks like Pendles will spend more down in fence, and less in the midfield (was not part of any CB attendances today)
B. That they played Reef and Johnson in the same side
C. That they used 3 talls in defence on one side (Eyre. Moore. Frampton)

A. No real surprise at this time of year., is it?
B. Seeing how they work together, while Brodie's out?
C. Seems an unlikely trio, doesn't it.

Training report: Friday January 19.

The focus on this session was contested ball drills and match sim, which went for around 30 mins; its starting to ramp up.

Everyone was present except for Ryan. And Mcstay of course.
Maynard and Checkers didn't participate, but did a running session with some others.

Initially you had Black fwd:, lippa. Hill. Schultz. Johnson. Reef. Begg. V eyre. Moore. Frampton. Howe. Noble. IQ

Sullivan, Jordy. Carmy. (Ruck: DC. Wings: crisp. WHE) v Fin. Allan. Hustwaite. (Ruck: cox- Elliott, Sidey wings)

Harry. Pendles. Markov. Sofronidis. Dean. Murphy v Beau. Nick. Mitchell. Teakle. HH. Krueger.

  • Mitchell, Beau and Nick had turns in the middle.
  • Begg had turns in the ruck v cox
  • Crisp rotated between wing and fwd Sullivan same.
  • Hustwaite mid and fwd Lippa in the middle and bit fwd Allan wing

Another match up’s; Richards. Hill. Reef. Johnson. Long v Moore. Eyre. IQ. Frampton. Noble. Howe.
Murphy. Dean. Sofronidis. DeMattia. Pendles. Markov. V Jamie. Krueger. Hustwaite. Hill. Nick

Goal tally:
Reef x 2
Beau x 2
Schultz x 2
Lippa x 1
Fin x 1
DC- x 1

+ Eyre was good again, providing some great marks in defence, along the wing and was involved in some handball plays.
Some spoiling contest work was involved in his game as well.

+ Sofronidis, had a nice defensive effort but struggled to get involved overall.

+ Sullivan was in the centre square a fair bit, sometimes down forward and thought he performed well.

+ Teakle actually looked not bad in this session, was involved a bit up forward. Took some good marks and worked in transition to set up some goals.

+ Hustwaite I liked his in tight work in stoppages, and did some nice things

Its a shame they dont have Ned Long as a SSP, as he looked darn good. Strong. Can take a mark, can tackle.

Beau, was great. They put him in the middle a couple times, and he was a bull. Also kicked a few goals up forward.

Jordy just breaking players ankles with the way he moves through the middle of the ground.

Pendles play down back.

Elliott was on the wing, crisp too, and forward. I imagine just serving a replacement for JDaicos.

Fin was strong. Moved well across the ground, got around players with ease and power. You feel he is primed to have a good season.

Noble, nobody can tackle him. He's just too strong, and he just moves with pace. Took some great marks and provided that run and carry off the half back line.

Reef was very active all match sim. Just too strong in the air for the likes of murphy and Frampton who failed to stop his influence. He could have easily had 3-4 goals but gave some off.
provided forward pressure on Allan, awarding him with a free kick. He's playing with intent and this is what we like to see from him.

DC was a presence with his marking during the match sim, whether its around the ground, or deep in defence.

TJ was smooth. He may be raw and thin, but has class and composure not many kids have right away.

Josh was back running straight lines, its progress

And just when they thought they were done, they ended the session with a running session

Possibly, but given his age and the up and comers, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the year we start to lessen his midfield and let exposure for the likes of fin through there.
We may see pendles play that HB role Nick did more often than not.

No doubt, but he'll likely still rotate through there too.
That last qtr in the GF is still etched in my mind.

Yeah, I'm sure he will at times. Maybe just in critical moments; though I do get the feeling it wont be as much as 2023. If we dont have to use him in there, we'll be going in a good direction. It'll mean we are getting more depth.

In terms of the talls in defence, forget who it is, I just wonder if its a set up they're considering. Even if its say Moore, Dean/Eyre, Murphy + the smalls and whomever will rotate through that HB line.

They can sign Ned Long as SSP, whether that's his training status or not.

Haven't heard much about Deane this pre-season. How's he looking? He seemed to be on the cusp 12 months ago. I can't imagine he's lost his ability, so he's one I was hoping would step up. Has anybody been keeping an eye on him?
He has looked good. Fitting back in well, given all the injuries he has had.

Could Noble play as an outside mid? He has the breakaway pace and will put his body on the line.
They’ve tried him further up the ground, he didn’t excel. It’s a more complicated game, think he’d need to become accustomed to it in the VFL before getting another go.

A) Similar to last year, will only play on ball when it’s absolutely necessary.

Love the insights, thanks!

So pumped that Fin is performing well, hoping he takes his chance! Was the best performer of his draft on our list in their first year, then stagnated.

Great to see Noble taking his grand final omission seriously. Will be tough to leave him out. Perhaps Maynard on ball to accommodate both Markov and Noble.

Thankfully its not our decision to work out lol They all played together all year until finals, so it can be done. Move some magnets around.

For sure - when the whips are cracking.

Depth definitely seems to be growing.

I also wonder if Long may have come into the picture for an AFL spot.

(Thanks again for the great reports, Jen).

If Long is training with us and they decide he’s the best option, there’s literally nothing stopping us selecting him. There’s no rule saying we have to select a player who’s officially training for a SSP spot, we can select any player who fits the eligibility criteria, which Long does.

Edit: beaten to it by someone who has nothing better to do than be on big footy at 1am on a Friday night/Saturday morning 😂

Hi Jen -no mention of Bytel from yesterday's session? I saw him in clearance work during the Wesley College training and thought he looked promising.
Thanks for all your hard work in putting your reports together. They're greatly appreciated!

Generally he has been pretty good, maybe its the change in jumper numbers, but can't say I spotted him too much yesterday.
