2024 VFL Season

Hey Guys,

Is anyone else gobsmacked that we somehow managed to lose to the SANFL?

It was literally all the best non-afl players from the whole east coast of Australia versus the best non-afl players from just South Australia.

Like when the game was announced I thought it was unfair and assumed that the VFL would only be able to utilise players from the Victorian teams. But no NSW and QLD team players were used.

This is an embarrassment, they must play a way higher standard of football over there. If Port Adelaide Magpies joined the VFL they would probably destroy.

Defiantly not SANFL were always favourites especially at home. Thought it was a good showing from VFL team at least game remained close.

Shaun Mannagh and Gary Rohan named in Geelong VFL team to take on the Bullants at Preston City Oval. An intriguing match up.

Last time Mannagh played the Bullants he won by 144, had 21 touches and kicked 1.3. The time before that it was a 180 point drubbing where he kicked six goals and had 25 touches.

Not a bad record. (maybe the 1.3 is)

Calm the waters?? Biggest joke ever

More like made waves. Hooper as good as he is stating need to stay calm, 13 debutants need to Gel. A coach in his 3rd year blooding 13 new players or HALF THE SIDE is not a benefit, Any GM or Coaching Director knows it shows distinct lack of development and retention of players and that’s where our club has fallen over.

If they stuck fact with their strategy in 2022 they would be in a far better place.

Coach must take full responsibility ( GM fell on his sword last year, might be time for coach as well) as he has generated the the worst recruiting/list managment output in Ports history. 1st year good, stuck with the experience and blooded youth, then had a brain melt down recruiting a Bennel, Wilkson etc etc, got rid of his skills and development staff plus good players in Lentini, Bowes, Holmes and a lot more and it’s all turn to crap. this year 50% of list either walked or dumped and hooper comes out asking members to be patient as they rebuild. WTF coach been doing last 2 years? More like demolishing the joint.

Hate to shoot Bambi and as good as hooper is end of day Port supporters know his kicking efficiency is the worst at the club.. Check out last quarter today, 5 kicks all hitting opposition on the tit. Hoops should stick to hitting targets than being an apologist for the worst coach in Ports history.

And is Signorelli becoming the biggest sook in VFL, whinging to umpires, remonstrating with his own players. Settle down champ, check your kicking at goals today especially in last qtr.
Port barely developed players under Gary Ayres either. And that showed when their list looked barely recogniseable post COVID.

Danny Ryan time now?

Are you for real! Ayres best list manager/coach across his time and petered out via Covid and HO decisions

Tell ya one thing about Ayres era, they would not have given up that lead today and allow Casey 6 last qtr goals. His teams were united both off and on the ground .

Werribee got the job done against a competitive Richmond. It was a real ugly scrap.

Great day at Willy, best place to watch footy in the State (country?) When the sun's out and little wind.

Very even 1st half, Willy kicked a goal after the HT siren to take the lead but then kicked 7 goals in the 1st 15 minutes of the third and coasted from there. Lead got to 10 goals, surprised the Sharks capitulated so easily and quickly, they were good 1st half and right in it at HT.

Iimpreesed with Willy, missed our first 2 games. Moved the ball quickly and skillfully and despite some big departures, looks to have covered them well.

Gotta say even with a big win, was often baffled and shaking my head at some of the umpiring, some of it very soft.

My point was post COVID in 2021 his list was barely recogniseable, there was no new talent coming through having lost a lot of experience due to the new salary cap. And that was evident when they returned for 2021 finishing last.

OI OI OI none of that, Port Melbourne didn't finish last, they finished 2nd last !!!

That Port Melbourne side in 2021 had to get rid of several players to make way for inexperience when the 6 players under 22 years of age per match rule came into play. Even Williamstown who was the most consistent side in the past 15 years struggled under that criteria. Ayres definitely developed players under his time. Players like Cain, Nahas, Dwyer, Pleming, Pinwall etc etc were all products of Ayres who took boys who could play and developed them into some of the best vfl players of their time.

As for the crowd which MRobbo posted - considering that Port had huge membership numbers in March, significantly more than its nearest rivals - after a forgiving and good showing by Borough supporters in their first home game, I think it's sad but fair to say that the fans have made a statement by their lack of attendance.
