We're back underway for another year of Champs action. The highly fancied Allies went down at home to SA in a game that was tight and tense throughout but didn't demonstrate the highest of skill level.

Mitch Marsh stood out with his ability to hit the scoreboard and deliver a ball to his teammates advantage. His hands were clean overhead, he kicked 4 goals of his own and he was involved in a number of scoring chains, directly assisting a few other goals for his teammates.

Footage gets posted of him going at 92% but he is missing targets, it’s ridiculous

Don’t mind criticism when it’s accurate and backs up the vision but when the vision clearly suggests otherwise I just don’t understand the reasoning.

Just stating DE%’s from a game doesn’t really paint the picture of where his kicking skill level is at in reality.
I wouldn’t want posters on here getting the wrong opinion of Louis and having unrealistic expectations of where he’s at just because of a few having the blinkers on and throwing out stats that just don’t paint the real picture.

Does he take the most risky kicks? No he doesn’t, that’s probably more the area of critique rather than the efficiency of his actual disposals.

but he hits his targets a lot more often than not which is all anyone can do.

Taj plays the majority of his junior footy in SA and his familiarity with many of the SA players may have helped to motivate him to get one over them in this game. He was up and about early, kicking two first quarter goals and leaping all over the SA rucks to dominate hit outs with his superior length. He played more forward than ruck as the game progressed and he remained dangerous, finishing with 4 goals including a variety of classy and creative finishes for a guy his size.

I don't usually follow this games as i leave it to better judges. I watched it because Lois was playing and I was quite surprised by the skill level of these kids. For all the CFL failures I think this is one part that they have gotten right and will hold up the players side well for the coming years. Now if they get the corruptness out of the game we might have a game we can all be proud of long after I'm gone.

Few takeaways from yesterday.

1. Taj Murray was extremely good and the one that surprised me the most. Hadn't seen him outside of the Academy game against Coburg. Thought he won the ruck battle when he was in there, kicked 4 and was able to do so even at ground level.

2. The 2 SA KPF's Mitch Marsh & Aidan Schubert were very effective albeit Schubert has that weird lumbering ruckman kicking action and Marsh I believe is only 191cm.

3. Wasn't much to write home about in the way of KPD's, which probably partly explains point 1 & 2 above being so prolific, 3 KPF's kicking 4 each. Think we are lucky we are stacked in this regard.

4. Dyson Sharp, I am a little concerned by the amount of hands on knees and walking he was doing especially when he spent a fair chunk at FF. Maybe he was unwell but can't have a poor tank and be a pure mid only. A watch for next week.

5. Patterson & Annable clearly best 2 out there. Think if he was open pool and there was a willingness to push him up into midfield Patterson could go #1.

6. SA have a couple of interesting wingers in LeRay & Barker. Barker torched it a bit early from memory but was solid after that. Both tall, LeRay looks quite powerful for the role and can hit some really nice penetrating kicks.

7. Kellaway had a lesser role this week off HBF with some CBAs. He is solid if unspectacular. Not sure we need to be accumulating points to match (I need to look in what the minimum discount is but pretty sure once he gets to about pick 40 you can just list him with next pick/list spot even if its our 5th round pick). I don't think Blair would have traded all the picks if we were going to need them, he's a pretty switched on guy.

Patterson is exactly the type we need on our list, his speed and power is so impressive.I remember someone pumping him up as a top 5 pick after the academy game.

Doesn’t have an outstanding trait but does the simple things well.

Isn’t a clearance beast or breakaway player but knows where the ball is at stoppages. Finds the short option and uses it well but never bites off more than he can chew. Seems to get to a lot of contests. Not sure what role he would play at senior level. Not a line breaker or elite kick for a running half back. Not the sort of player that is a midfield bull.

Is he Jagga lite or more like a Sam Banks style?

Sharp will expect to have bigger games in this Champs series but this was still a solid first outing as he helped his SA team to an upset win over the Allies. Given he's one of if not the strongest midfielder in the draft pool it seems a strange choice to have him playing so much time in the forward line, but when he was onball he was typically powerful and influential in there, helping SA build a substantial edge at stoppage which played a large role in the win. On a day when his team struggled with ball movement, Sharp was better than most with his disposal including a highlight moment with a lovely ball off the outside of his boot that landed perfectly for a running Harley Barker to finish.

Great summary.

I like the look of Taj Murray, but my concern is he’s not a true KPF nor a true #1 ruck.

Sims was similar but a bigger more established body.

Mitchell Marsh seems to be an interesting type. I generally don’t like taking third talls (I.e. Ollie Henry/ Sam Sturt) early, but Marsh holds elite endurance testing numbers so could see teams thinking he’s a long term being either a wing or that HFF who pushes up. Think he’ll be back of first round at this stage.

Lastly re: Sharp, it feels as if both Central Districts and SA U/18 are trying to show AFL recruiters he’s more flexible than just an inside midfield. Yet that seems to be to his detriment where he’s showing relatively poor output at these various positions. Still goes in the first round, possibly top 10 as his one-wood is so bankable; but his stock is as cold as it’s ever been right now.

I'm 100% in the same boat with Louis. I'm not sure what role he plays at AFL, and he takes pretty safe options but he is improving most times I see him though which is all we can ask.

I think I've said before, I'm more bullish on the academy kid Roberts from the little I've now seen of him. He has a good burst of pace and seems to have a good tank, uses it nicely although also think he also falls into the taking it safe category as well. Could easily see him developing into part of a strong defensive unit with his rebound.

Could be us asking SA to play him in defence. Contrary to his dad I haven't seen much defensive work from him but I guess at Sturt he's one of the best 3 players they've got.

Doesnt have the foot skills for the backline IMO.

Wing at AFL level for me, runs hard, is faster than he looks and wins his own footy.
