A developing ruck and key position player, Waller possesses enormous upside given his athletic profile. While still very raw, he is strong overhead and has shown good ruck craft to give his midfielders first use of the ball. Displayed plenty of his natural talent across seven games for the Brisbane Lions Academy this year, averaging 10 disposals, 2.5 marks and 17.5 hitouts. Also got a feel for the next level by playing a VFL game for the Lions. At representative level he played all four National Championships matches for the Allies, competing aggressively and averaging 12.5 hitouts and 6.5 disposals. Waller has excellent bloodlines, being the grandson of former South Melbourne star Peter Morrison.

For now that's all talk with who come draft night the deals will come. We're still on the dees and bombers raider. At pick 4 and 3 you take the best talent and Grij aren't it at that point if we split it different story.

History says different.

Since 2018 (the first draft of live trading), there’s only been one trade in the top 10 which was completed on draft night - pick 11 and a second round pick for pick in 10 (Bombers and Geelong in 2023).

What incentive is there for Essendon or Melbourne to give up two FRP’s (which is what it’ll cost) to move up a hand full of spots in an even draft? Both teams would value multiple selections over one pick at 1-4 spots higher. If they had a target, both would probably able to offer a similar deal to West Coast for pick 2 and guarantee the player they want.

I don’t have Grjl best available at these picks either, but he isn’t far off. Certainly wouldn’t be unjustified picking him at 4 (which would become 7 or 8 anyway).

Realistically our picks are later than 3/4 following academy picks but here’s some of the more solid defenders drafted within the top 10-12 picks since 2010:

Dyson Heppell, Lachie Whitfield, Nick Vlastuin, Christian Salem, Jacob Weitering, Hunter Clark, Aaron Naughton (appreciate he plays a lot more forward in recent years but he could easily go back again), Lachie Ash, Hayden Young and Heath Chapman.

There’s also Josh Gibcus, Jedd Busslinger and Connor O’Sullivan drafted in recent years but it’s to early to tell for these guys. Willem Duursma who’s also played most of his football this year as a defender is primed to be pick one this year.

I appreciate there’s still your Lachy Plowman and Caleb Marchbank’s who have been early picks and didn’t reach their potentials but there’s also been plenty of busts who were early picks and played midfield or on another positions.
