Brisbane getting a free top 5 draftee will hopefully kill off the academy system,

Absolute rort
I think Uwland and Patterson both go before Annable. That's before they pick up Addinsall, Coulson and Murray. They also have access to Melbourne F/S White although I suspect he chooses Demons

Cooper Hodge likely picks the Lions next year as an academy player rather then the Hawks though.

Turning into a real issue for the AFL given most of the northern sides now take most of their picks from their academy and either using their picks to trade in ready made players or higher up the draft before they need to bid with the safety net of 3-4 top line players

Talk of Suns trading up to pick 2 (WCE Allan compo). Will become a real issue. Obviously Lions are a bigger concern because the also have access to F/S.

Chuck in Uwland/Patterson and they have 6 first round Academy players in 3 years with Addinsall around the mark to potentially make it 8,

There is just no justification for this especially when they know they can just keep trading up or out of the first round and bank more point each year like they have been

They are building two massive juggernauts in Lions & Suns with all the advantages that they have been handed

Sadly it makes perfect business sense.
The southern states are already locked in footy consumers. Qld and NSW not so much.

From a business perspective I see absolutely no reason why the AFL should change any of the current settings if GCS, GWS, Brisbane and Sydney win all of the next 10 premierships. It has been their strategic objective for 40 years to capture the Qld and NSW markets and to have those four clubs dominating the comp would go a long way to achieving it.

In reality if those four clubs shared 7 or more of the next 10 flags the AFL would find its hand forced by the southern states, so some concessional tweaks would become necessary.

However there will also be the need to give the Tasmania franchise a flying start before 2030 so clubs like ours will be way down the back of the queue for a long time to come.

We just have to find a way to stay competitive for as long as possible. Father/Sons and NGA picks might help if they don't change the rules on that.

So the strategic horizon looks pretty bleak for small Vic-based clubs. If weathering it means mid-table mediocrity for a while it's better than being as bad as North or West Coast have been for so many years. (North haven't been outside the bottom three since 2019. Counting this year that's six consecutive seasons!)

It will become a bit of a double whammy for the smaller vic clubs.
We won’t get access to northern academies through the draft, and northern clubs continue to trade up to get elite non-tied draftees.
Fast forward, under the salary cap they can’t afford to keep them all as they mature, and we will miss out again as those that can be shaken loose choose the bigger vic clubs.
Thank goodness for our own FS’s!!!

Likely pick 11 is dogs first if they miss finals. 11 is of course after the Allen compo. If unable to land any big fish I hope dogs target saints pick 5.
