SSP period back open for Carlton. Will we use two spots?? I think we should as we will likely get another LTI. However if we don’t get another injury it’s obviously win win so it’s worth taking this risk. The alternative is far worse.

We obviously need to replace Jagga and given our injury list already this season (and historically even with the perennials gone) holding a spot open for Newy on the hope he might recover in time to play later in the season is probably a luxury we cannot afford IMO.

Probably one of the worst off-seasons for the club in my memory, and we’ve had some shockers.

Our drafting/trading was not aligned to where this list is at and it’s almost blown before round 1.

We should have chased some lower profile talls for sure. As much as I like Haynes, another intercepting defender trying to play 10cm above his height was not the right call. A genuine KPD was the right trade (not an SSP freebie), leaving Silvagni to play forward in case of a Curnow/McKay injury. Haynes should have been in addition to McGovern as an interceptor or as cover for McGovern.

We also did not recruit additional AFL ready pace.

Our salary cap is a mess. Too much on too few. Something had to give in that regard. We are way too unbalanced.

I know nothing of White, how he went last year, how he went over pre season, i still find his addition strange given we just signed Evan’s, i would have thought we would have looked to add a midfielder given the injury to Smith.

Im not quite sure whether Austin has picked Evan’s and White because he sees players who can make a difference this year or if he sees both as being able to develop longer term.

I have liked our SSP and MSD picks lately so i do back in the calls, but it still seems strange

I don't want to dwell on this topic too long, because it's all too late now, but which KPD should we have targeted?

Elliot Himmelberg? Josh Battle?

We were not matching those contracts.

Tom Barass with all of our draft picks?

Which low cost option wasn't investigated enough? Tom Clurey?

We trialed three key backs, and none met the requirements. League is light on key backs is the core of it

It's not just, in one off season, it's over a longer period where we have ignored available talent, either through the draft or via trades

We haven't drafted a 1st round tall since 2015

We haven't really addressed pace over a similar period

While I've loved the hardness of the likes of Hewett, Kennedy, etc, you can only carry so many of these types

Our list is strong, but it's still lacking in balance

Hopefully the GWS game gives us something to grasp onto. It is getting old season after season watching what we know are talented players get significant setbacks. Walsh, Charlie and Jagga this year just to continue the slaps. Cerra needs to show us something as he is falling away too - please Cerra, give us some of the Cripps/Hewett mindset.

Hopefully GWS show us Cerra in a more favourable light and hopefully JSoS can help our backline who have a penchant for losing most ground ball contests. The defence marking space and then seeing Young's face after he has been caught 3 steps short is making me want to not watch footy anymore.

I don't agree picking 2 small forwards. Mcmahon should have been selected. The knock on him is his his contest work but a guy who averages 2.8 goals a game has genuine AFL traits and with Harry and or Charlie in the same side, Mcmahon could dine out.
Looks like Durds is injured and we might need Elijah to play more mid time now Jagga is out, so might be backfilling those 2.

We need to have our eye on the prize of a talented midfielder that was overlooked in the draft and put them through their paces (and off the radar) for the MSD.

Cooper Lord was good spotting last year.

Also looking at KPD (HOF to develop), Ruck/forward, running/skilled HBF (though Garry is hopefully that), marking forward.

Who's 'Garry'?

I don’t think we have prioritised those types but it’s hard when we don’t have the cap space nor the picks. Hewett was now 4 years ago and cheap as chips.
Austin has had two picks inside 25. Smith and Hollands.
Hollands wasn’t my choice but with the benefit of hindsight he looks like a really good pick.
When we have only had one KP spot to fill for a decade I don’t really blame them in thinking they can find a cheap option which they have had about 10 goes at. It’s not that easy though and when people say you can find solid tall cheap they are right but seem to forget nearly all fail and they are hard to find.

People who say our cap isn’t an issue are kidding themselves also. It’s 4 years since we have brought in a player who would be getting much more than an average AFL wage.

We've got as many A graders as any team in the comp, so not surprising we're not bringing more in.

The question is, do we have the right mix of A graders, or too many?

Plenty of cheap options over an extended period via trades or through the draft to balance the list and or focus on needs

Sure, Austin has had to reverse some of the poor acquisitions from the time he took over, but we still lack the balance required

absolutely with the draft, we haven’t drafted great. With trades I thinks it’s harder then we make out. Hill and D'Ambrosio are about the only two cheaper option who would shift the needle over the last three years. No KPP would really improve us over that time.

Sam Collins delisted from the Dockers, mentioned many times on our board, same with a delisted Keays, Hinge

And many others on cheap contracts and trade capital

Brisbane have managed to build a premiership defense around Harris Andrews.

We could do the same with targeting role players.

The three key guys in my opinion are Zorko, Starcevich and Payne. Payne is the big body to take up space and put pressure on the talls, we have Young in that role and he is undersized and lacks awareness. Saad is our Zorko but lacks the physicality to defend the stronger players.

To me the guy we need is a Starevich type who can beat anyone one on one, stay on his feet, hold in the ball if things aren't going his way until the cavalry arrive, and clear the ball without turning it over.

We probably should have been looking at big body guys that were retiring who could have gone around for another season or two. in the absence maybe we have to sacrifice from elsewhere, Boyd and Hollands are two lightly framed for the role.

On our list maybe it has to be Acres, but his shoulders are a bit stuffed and spoiling all day could be an issue.
Additionally, we suffer from a midfield that doesn't defend as a group.

Again Acres elite, our other guys by and large drift down and don't defend with purpose.

In summary, we need a big upper bodied, balanced half back that is technically sound but not a super star and a coaching adjustment that gets our midfield back at speed matching up on dangerous players.

I’d love to know the reasoning for picking Evans over White. Wouldn’t have been my choice
Playing devils advocate, I can understand that Evans presents as more of a sure thing in that he has played at afl level semi-regularly. He also provides more versatility than White.

I would've taken White (and Phillips) before Evans, but I'm glad both are on the list now.

I know they exist but those types were mentioned along with another couple hundred players. As I said earlier, over the last 3 years I can only think of two players out of the 18 clubs who moved cheaply and would’ve/could’ve shifted the needle for us.
Funnily enough someone like Evan’s who I don’t rate could end up being our Hinge/Keays level pickup. The randomness of the success of these types around the league makes it just look like educated guessing.

Just my opinion but I think if you want to bring in leg speed and a KPD for this tilt at a flag it’s going to cost or we have to accept that there’s probably an 80% chance the cheap option we take won’t be the answer.
Our top heavy list if why I think we will finish top 4 and be as good of a chance to win the flag as anyone this season but it’s also why we won’t be able to fill our holes.

There is no perfect formula, but there needs to be a better balance

SOS was more risk reward types, which is hit and miss, also was poor with later picks, when there was obvious no brainers late in the draft.

Austin has been generally been more conservative, but also trying to rectify some previous poor decisions

I have no doubt Austin will pivot, but the timing has to be now

So, David King doesn't rate us or Sydney or Port in the Top 9... if he is right (IF!) and we finish 10th or lower it's going to be a disaster because we will have no choice but to do a mini rebuild. In that scenario we will be forced to fix our defence and lose a couple of big contracts.

Which does make me wonder why we extended so many guys in the last 12 months.

We will play finals.

Excellent summary on top of the glaring issue of putting all our eggs into a first rounder who has done his knee already while ignoring a top class HBF/defensive midfielder (which is now an area of concern because Newman is done and Saad has had an interrupted pre-season) AND no 1st round pick this year. We are a couple of injuries away from a bottom 6 finish.
