If any of us were in TDK's shoes we'd all take the money, even if we liked where we worked and the friends we worked with. its too big of a $ difference not to take it!
Anyone that says they wouldn't take the money and run is lying!

That kind of coin can set you up for life.

Anyone saying they would stay at their current employer, where they are well liked and have friends, for $1 million a year instead of taking the $1.7 million a year at a lesser employer isn’t necessarily lying.

I can't win a premiership at my work.

And when I quit my job I won't have supporters of my employer offering massive deals.

This ignores that he’ll be getting ‘set up for life money’ regardless.
He’ll be the highest paid player at Carlton, even though he’s not (currently) the best player at Carlton.
And by taking St Kilda’s 1.7, he’d be limiting their chance at having success by them paying so much to a single player.

I wonder how many gun players who stayed at their club for less money but more success regret it?

That's what I love about this BF forum. We all love Carlton but doesn't mean we all have to agree on things about Carlton.

Happy for people to disagree with my opinion. Everyone is entitled to theirs.

I definitely don’t disagree with you.

I totally get your points, but success isn't guaranteed. How many players that stayed on less money and didn't get success regret not taking the money at another club?

Well for a start 47% of the extra $700k goes to the tax man so it is only $371k.

But if you are earning $547,790 net of tax a year ($10,534 a week) before sponsorships, is the extra money really going to make you that much happier?

Agreed, but maybe with the additional dollars you get from another employer you won't need those supporters or former employer to offer you those deals, because you're already set up for life. Or your new employer and supporters offer you those deals if you do well there.

Whatever the case, TDK has a huge decision to make. I hope he doesn’t regret it in the future.

Yeah, it’s not guaranteed. But it’s much more likely.

Also factor in if you want to be on the big stage, playing at the G in front of big crowds. Not going to be getting that at St Kilda.

I will 100% agree on this point. Aints playing at Marvel is a much lesser of a stage than the G in front of a big Blues crowd

Not sure the equations are correct. $1.7m per year = $930,372 per year after tax, which is $17,977 per week after tax. Thats huge money and makes a massive difference. Being happy is up to the individual, but money certainly helps.

edit.

If you're referring to TDK staying at Carlton on a $1m per year. the numbers are: $559,372 per year after tax, which is $10,842 per week after tax.

Still big money

Yep and the difference between $1m before tax and $1.7m before tax is $371k a year or $7,134 a week. But as I said if you are already taking home over $10k a week (your $17k less the extra $7k) before any sponsorship which already is massive money, who much do you really want the extra $7k? What more do you really need?

The St Kilda offer is a no brainer from a financial perspective. I am sure he can grow to love the place that is paying him 2X more than any other player there fairly quickly - until it all goes pear shaped - which it will. Even Carlton's offer is a stretch in my books.

All the best to the kid- he has won a lottery and it is all up to him - but having to perform to the level of his pay week in week out- will take its toll irrespective.

For St Kilda this is a marketing exercise and a get good playa exercise - for Carlton it is a suck eggs situation unless TDK does the smart thing and stays - which then makes St Kilda look stoopid because they got knocked back instead of stoopid for making the offer and player accepting. Either way they are stoopid - but SOS and Co are playing with AFL money anyway.

Seriously bizarro deluxo situation.

Not sure how much my life would be different if I had $10M instead of $6M dollars?

The marginal benefit of each additional dollar actually decreases the higher things get.

How many ivory backscratchers can you buy until you are sick of it?
In reality you'd only see an extra $2.4m once tax is taken out.

For that money he’s more than welcome to go. I’d be more worried about about the sanity of SOS and StKilda for ticking off on that deal. They’re 5+ years away from contending with that list, poor management all around.

On TDK - the $1.7 million amount rumoured by the Saints is just bizarre. What is SOS/Saints up to?

It's not like they desperately need a ruck - Rowan Marshall is excellent and is only 29.

It's not like they're missing a 'TDK' to put them into contention. They just got outclassed by 70+ points by the Bulldogs, who are themselves only mid-table.

It's just really odd list management. We saw combining Gawn and Grundy fail to work for the Dees - both who in their prime are better than Marshall and TDK. Tying up so much money into rucks in their situation just makes so little sense.
Saints have banked coin and need to spend it. For no draft picks and then not having to keep paying duds, putting their war chest into TDK is a sound idea. Plus TPP is going up.

It looks crazy, but the money needs to go somewhere

Still believe if TDK elects to leave it will be Geelong much broader factors than purely $.
Saints already have a quality ruckman absolutely madness to offer that type of $ to TDK
