2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

JSOS has had A grade patches but probably around St Kilda Mason Wood level. At his best looks absolutely A grade. I think he falls to a solid B overall though.

Windy is still super young. Nearly impossible to tell how far he can go still. Matt Rowell and Hayden Young types were getting less touches than him at the same age.

His best footy was on a wing or as a stopper. Probably needs a more defined role now.

To me A grade is simply top 5 in the comp by position. Elite is elite which is superstar class like Bont, Buddy, Danger etc. Sincs, Wilkie and maybe just Marshall probably qualify as A grade at their best. People underrate Marshall after a quiet year.
JSOS was so good early this year when played in his right position.
Could be a great get for us . Gee they will come hard if he doesn’t get out on the park enough 😂

Yes at 7.27 pm when they had it for 10 days during trade period.
Mackie is a smarmy piece of shit who drinks his own bathwater.
Missed out on both Marshall and Curnow by lowballing. His time has passed.
genuinely reckon they outsmarted themselves on this one

if they had the F1 on the table on day 1 (as asked), well before the Dees came calling for Steele, maybe it gets done

once Steele was moved on, any lingering cap and list spot issues were sorted, and we had little incentive to move Marshall, regardless of what was on offer

the Cats may have been banking on Steele not finding a home and us moving Rowan out of necessity

personally I would have taken the F1 + 40 for Marshall over the peanuts we got for Steele, had they been on the table at the same time

that pick 40 will probably come into the mid-30s, and would have been nice cover for any Fincher bid before pick 36 where we require points to match. conversely I'd say there's a pretty decent chance the Cats will now use it to bid on him

Seeing Will Phillips get delisted by Norf, I had another look at the 2020 AFL Draft--it's a bit of a stinker except a few:

That's all time bad. Max Holmes, Errol Gulden and Beau McCreery the only decent later ones too. I thought Bailey Laurie was going to be a player too. He's a gun at VFL level.

Part of it was that Lyon was an autocrat that covered about 6 roles. Once he left we brought in coaches with no experience and no idea how to structure up the footy department using single role staff. There was no real structure in any part of the club.

I saw Richo up close and he was always talking like he was on the verge of success but nothing about what he was saying seemed to have any actual concrete reasoning. It was all based on wait and see where hope takes us.
Reminds me a lot of Michael Voss the coach. Unsophisticated basic empty messaging that hinted to his lack of ability to analyse the game and devise a structure to make it harder for the oppo to beat you, inability to communicate effectively with players

Selwood a monty for captain in my book. Nick Watson also in the line up.
I wonder if there are current Saints players that fans of other clubs would have on their list?

Higgins maybe?
King an outside shot
Perhaps Stocker, Phillipou and Caminiti

Not many, and none in the top echelon, I'd bet.

Don't know if that's a good or a bad thing.

Did anyone see an article saying that Jared Rivers is going and Lenny Hayes or BJ are in line for his role? I saw it on Instagram and meant to have a look and it had refreshed and moved on. Any update on this?

Yeah I seen that but nothing else since

Wilkie
Marshall
Sincs

A few I reckon and a few after next year

Nas!! ( how quickly we forget)
Yeah, annoying for the oppo because they're good, but "most punchable"?

I have my doubts on any of them.

On one point of yours I do agree though:

After next year, plenty of Saints will be on thst list

I would not take pick 25 and 40 with a 3rd coming back.
It was shit then and it is shit now.

How about NAZ, Windy, Wilkie and Marshall.
All were sort after just before or during Trade Period.

We would have had a field day in years gone bye.

Hobbs, Phillips and quite a few more, we would have been looking at a bin chicken record. I’m also sure that these guys were thrown up on here as potential trade targets.

North and Essendon have really burnt some picks in recent years. Not that we have a proud record but at least we’ve turned the page on that. They could have 6 first rounders each and they’ll still miss two out of three.

I doubt it happens but I think carlton would just pay up.

What a stupid system this is, the afl just love to complicate things. Having decided to keep the romance of father son picks the obvious answer imo was to keep things simple. Demand clubs retain and use their first round pick or acquire a better one.

You’d still get the Brisbane situation winning a flag and getting the best player at pick 18 but I’m not sure too many who support the father son rule would argue about that.

JSOS will be more durable not playing in the ruck

He does a few things every time he plays that show what he could be. He's got a bit of latent X factor. If he can get the basics right I reckon he could be an upmarket flashier Sam Gilbert. You were on him early.
Ripping young man Angus...pretty confident too...he'll get opportunities in '26

How was Hodge a dog?
He played to hurt, using elbows, knees and fists regardless of whether the ball was in play anywhere near him. He showed no respect for opposition players by physically targeting those who were going well.

You can call that "tough" footy, or whatever, but he never seemed able to recognise better skill and talent without wanting to inflict some pain on them. For instance, to me there is an incomparable difference between Lenny Hayes' hard play and the way Hodge went about it.

We all have our preferences and approach but Hodge typified the Hawks unsociable, uncompromising and ruthless game, which ruined the beauty of the extraordinary skills required to play our game at the highest level. But, I hate the Hawks and Hodge is yet another reason why!
