2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

What happened to Ginbey thought he was on track?

Ive watched 0 WC eagles games in the last 5 years though.
13 disposals a game last year. Not what you want from a top 10 pick. Think they’re trying to salvage his career by moving him back.

Ginbey is looking like a bust. They’ve butchered their first rounders mostly by trading them away and including guys like Owies who was OOC for them as well. It’s diabolical list management, they’ll be down longer than North IMO.
Ginbey just came runner up in their best and fairest

He looks better than his disposal count but doesn't look like a star. I think his ceiling looks Seb Ross.

Wow really? That’s not super impressive for a one win team but my memory must be a little bit off.

He’s played mostly as a lock down defender this year which is different to what most of us were generally expecting when he was played as inside mid when he got drafted
That’s what I thought. I’m sticking to my “bust” theory. 🤣 ;)

I stand to be corrected but Eddy and McQualter played more defensive forward roles didn’t they? Eddy definitely didn’t have the gut busting run and acceleration Byrnes has

Was funny, at the time, Eddy was considered a running machine, but he never ran to where the ball was, more often ran to the spot where his opponent had just picked it up. Maxwell Smart would have loved him. ( Missed it by that much. ).

McQualter was drafted as a mid , but wasn't quite up to it ( i suspect physically, because he obviously had the smarts ). As a defensive forward in 2009 he kicked 22 goals. The following year, 8 , and a lot less contested possessions. Year after that , we didn't play him unless we had to.

CJ would have been a gun if he could kick.
In later years they sometimes played him on ball. He racked up possessions, and got good contested possession numbers. Along with clearances and tackles.
But....His stats say that 6 clangers were pretty frequent. In 2012 vs Brisbane, 28 disposals, 12 changers.
One of the best taggers we've ever seen IMO.

It looks like we probably don't have a spot for them. If Said comes back is that our roster full?
We had 2 rookie spots, Said was picked up and we passed on the second.

That leaves one spot, presumably thats got Wanganeen's name on it if he can tick the right boxes over the next month or two.

I reckon we'd have a bit of a hole in our list for small defenders if Stocker and/or Sincs went down.

We'd be very reliant on inexperienced guys like Hastie, Travaglia, LOC, or lose Nas in the midfield.

I reckon Voss is a good list fit and he's a Saints F/S who has done the hard yards and gotten results, but what would I know.

I suspect that Tex Wanganeen has the inside running (given the family tie to NAS).
He would have to muck up seriously to be dismissed as a chance to make his way onto our list, or someone else would have to really shine to supplant him.

If we don't choose any train on player, can that final list spot end up being used in the midseason draft?
I ask because it is a rookie spot, not a main list spot.

Next year will be interesting .
Out of contract end of the year.

Dodson. 1 game last year. I hope we sign him up sooner rather than later, much rather have him then someone like Boyd.
Caminiti. Played every game 2026. But if Howard and Silvagni are both fit does he get a game" Strikes me as someone other teams might try to poach if he doesn't.
Sharman. Sign him up.
Butler: Has Higgins, Ryan, Henry, Said, Collard. If some of those below him come on, he might find himself in the hot seat.
Wilson :Sign him.
Howard: His fault or not, he needs a better year than this year. Make him earn his 1 year contract.
Armstrong: Lol his first year was non-existent.
Dow: On a good day he can hold his own, but never available...same story as at Carlton. He needs to play a lot in 2026 if he wants to stay in AFL. Last decent availability was 2021.
Keeler: I think we should chase his signature, he's showing a fair bit.
Carroll: I've seen him do things i think are great, but, mostly not. He could turn it around, but hell between spudding it up and being unavailable, i'd be surprised. Delist.
O'Connell. Still have hopes , he's been ok.
Stocker , Free agent. I think we'll probably keep him, depending on others. Not a bad player or person to have around.
Said. Suffered from injury, hope he can make an impact but could be unlucky.

My understanding is yes it can

Ginbey is one of west coasts best young talents. No where near a bust.

Yeah, he looks effective in that in-between role that intercepts, quite tall, kicks well. Not going to be a star in a midfield role, but could be one of the best in that particular defensive role.

And he’s only had 3 years. I love Matteas, but same draft (yep, Pou is young in that year, but IIRC Ginbey was late birthday too) and plenty of time for that cohort yet. WC players will also suffer from what we have hated too - if your team isn’t great, then outsiders assume every player on the list is junk. Wait until we win a few more games each year and suddenly guys on our list that have been around a bit are suddenly better to the medYa and oppo dimwit fans.

It’s hard to even name their potential talent.

Reid obviously but everyone is just waiting for him to leave. Ginbey? I guess now Duursma? If you’re a shit team you usually at least have some kids to enjoy watching develop and create hope, not sure west coast even have that right now.

I loved CJ, like you said if he could kick, even just a passable kick (or even handball tbh) he would have been a proper gun

What’s the go with Will Phillips, is he still training with us?
