Credit to him for maintaining a high ceiling. Doesn't change the fact his role this season is not an outside receiver and he's playing more inside. Seems to align with our poor transition game on the outside.

But he is, he’s doing both and that’s what’s pushed him into AA contention

Yes.

Dunkley plays as a defensive, lock down mid. He does not play play a see ball, get ball role.

None of Ashcroft, Ashcroft, Annable, Marshall or Fletcher are real in and under mids like prime time Neale was, or Matt Rowell is, or Dyson Sharp in this years draft is.

So do we want a big bodied mid or a see ball get ball mid?

Both Ashcrofts and Annable are great see ball get ball mids. Dunkley and Rayner are both physical midfield “bulls”.

I feel like we’re overreacting to one game where our mids got beaten up around the ball. They were off the pace and we got beaten up but if we’re a bit cleaner with the ball and smarter with our use then the conversation switches to the GC mids were too slow and they’ve got too many one paced guys.

I'd be interested to try him through there as part of our pitch to keep him if the rumour that he wants midfield time is true. Not a real fan long term though.

He was timid for sure. After that heavy hit early I wondered if it rattled him a bit.

But you are assuming that is injury related, could just as easily be related to his contract and he wants out because he wants to play mid

Certainly an argument to have another bigger bodied player available to provide assistance to Dunkley and Berry.

However, I tend to think our issues are stemming from better rucks dominating us and providing first use, and the fact our defensive set ups need some tweaking. A big bodied mid wouldn’t have solved the issue of clearances goal side at centre bounce yesterday. In fact, likely it would have conflated that issue. Witts seriously punished us, and our mids were in an awkward position where they needed to attack to get us back in the game, but had no service.

Also, teams have recently added more speed around the ball, with even Wines playing less on ball than a few years back and he’s a Brownlow medalist. Not sure we would want to tinker too much in there with personnel (outside the ruck), more our set up if things aren’t going as planned.

Would have loved for just one of the Ashcrofts/Marshall/Annable to have been cast in the Timmy Watson/Patrick Dangerfield mould. 6'2; built; explosive. Think Rayner with the ability to get 30 possies.

I believe the bolded bit is in part due to McCluggage playing more inside. He's our best bet in terms of a release player who can hit targets and use the ball wisely. WAshcroft is stepping up too but he's more a elite handball through traffic player than by foot. We need these two to be outside players than inside like Adelaide have done with Dawson and Soligo.

If we release those two to the roles where their return value is at it's highest for our team, then it'll open doors for grunt inside players who go to win first possession under packs.

Scores from clearances are by nature really variable. I think it has as much to do with issues in our D50 than with what our mids actually do.

Harris has had an inconsistent year by his standards and he has been neutered without Payne. Watching him stuck standing next to King unable to play free and intercept sucked.

Our d50 is the biggest area of concern by a country mile. I actually don't think it can be fixed this season with the outs we have. There is no alternative to Dizzy/Lester combo we just have to run that and hope for the best. I don't know what you do about Answerth, probably will have to be a crude change like a Dev. Or maybe defensive Jasper and just cop the downside of what we lose elsewhere.

There is enough talent in the midfield and, although skewed towards our smalls, the forward line as well. And we can generally get a decent spread of goal scorers.

In essence, what I'm saying is. We need Alex Davies. He is the final piece of the puzzle.

Alex Davies would be perfect to complement the next wave in terms of inside bull department. But he's looking for first 22 opportunities right now so he may not be suitable. More than likely he'll go to one of the melbourne clubs.

I think a cheap gap fill for inside bull would be Will Brodie. I'd ask the question for a 2-3 year contract and making it clear he'll be there to protect the younger brigade coming through.

Why use a roster spot on a player like Brodie who isn't even good enough for the Suns, when we can just move Berry inside?

It's like you forget where you are at times, and that people are all different.

There are a lot of ordinary fans here, with no inside word or connections to the club at all, so we can only make suppositions based purely on what we see. And because we're all different, with different lived experiences, people are going to see things differently.

For me, I can't understand the match committee selecting Oscar. He's so obviously physically incapable of competing at AFL level, what's the point in selecting him. It's like Fagan doesn't want to play a different style of forward line, or go into a game with no obvious second ruck, that he'd rather play a sub par player, than change the team tactics.

Similarly, I would have moved on from Charlie by now. His ankle is buggered, he's starting to lose his speed, and he hasn't learnt to change his game to reflect this. And all this is negatively impacting his own performances and the teams chances of winning individual games, which impacts our ladder position, which impacts our chances in the finals.

Sometimes Fagan appears to be too loyal to a fault.

Nor can I explain why we go in to so many games with what appears to be an underprepared mindset. That we just have to show up and we'll win. That's what Saturday looked like. How can a team go in to a match without the right mindset, not taking the opposition seriously. That's what round two against the Eagles looked liked, what the loss to Melbourne looked liked, what the draw with North looked liked, and what the weekend looked liked. How can such an obviously talented team be so mentally fragile?

And I only want to do certain things in my job too; perhaps I should just say to my boss, no thanks, find someone else, I’m only doing this part of my role. Sounds reasonable.

Maybe that’s why there’s a hold out on the contract. I like Cal but that’s not a great mindset to have when trying to win a premiership

He made a comment in an interview or similar some time ago (last year I think) that that's his preference when asked about his form.

That's not the same as him saying "I refuse to play anywhere else ever". You guys are reading way too much into an off-hand comment.
