Sometimes I think people forget how thin our midfield is. Move Steele and it leaves Clark or Dow as our 2nd most experienced mids. That's a dire situation to be in.
It’s pretty dire even with him in it. If Steele and Macrae are out it means other guys are in by default which is probably the only way Ross will consistently put youngsters in there.

Boxshall, Garcia, Travaglia, even Wilson etc need to be in there every week IMO with maybe only one of the senior guys in there or none at all. Windy shouldn’t be in there if one of Steele or Macrae are in there either. The young guys give hope, the old ones keep us in no man’s land.

It actually makes it sound like the club was all over the place

And I will stick with SOS and Gubby are no good
That’s fine.

But I wasn’t wrong with what I shared.

Your views on the club and those involved are seperate.

Probably not too confusing given only 1 of them would actually play football.

You literally just wrote that he was signing it signed after the pies game so either you or SOS (or both) were wrong.

Similar thing to TDK here you’re SURE he’s coming just as you were SURE Battle was staying.

Absolutes on this stuff are foolish until ink is on paper.

Guys I think ultimately we are not playing to our strengths when it comes to trading/FA

Imo our strength for the last 20 years has been getting guys who are struggling for opportunity.

Steele
Roberton
Membrey
Butler
Wood
McRae
Bruce

Just to name some recent ones.

Ultimately, the more targeted this has been (Steele, McRae, Bruce) the better results it has yielded,

In addition I’d argue players we’ve tried this with but have missed

Draper
Xerri
Caldwell

Have shown to be equally good.

This is to an extent what Geelong has done … but using guys in need of a fresh start as oppose to guys not getting games. They are cheaper and don’t disrupt the salary cap the same way. Specifically targeting quality teams and their depth players.

In saying that some players I have ‘scouted’ I did this regarding young KPF the other day with replacements for King.

Billy Dowling 187 cm
Averaging 22 touches in the sanfl
Midfield

Adam Cerra , with Jagga smith coming in next year. I’d look at him.

Harry Demttia from pies
Jacob Ryan from pies
Archie Perkins is one of look at
Sam Sturt
Nathan O’Driscol
Mitch Knevitt
George Stevens

The big team I’d be raiding is the suns
With so many academy guys to come through
  • Ben Ainsworth (I think could be worth a look at)
  • Jake Rodger

Giants aswell
  • Ryan Anguin
  • Connor Stone
  • James Leake
  • Max Gruzewski
  • Worpal we know
  • Jack scrimshaw is go for
  • I’d also keep a very VERY close eye on Cam McKenzie
  • Matt Jefferson
  • Tom Sparrow
  • Tyler Sonsie
  • Oli Florent
  • Harvy Ghalaghar
  • Jed Busslinger
-

Just to name a few.
On the Giants

Wehr, Aleer, Derksen, and O'Halloran listed in this article

Good post.

The Membrey trade was a strategy I'd like to see more of. We're not in the premiership window right now so what do we care if Collingwood get another flag or not? Membrey had been loyal to us for years, there's a chance he can win a cup and some glory in his last few years, we probably couldn't have given him that. From our side, we give Sharman the exposure he needs and free up some more salary cap, plus correct the squad balance a little.

As a player, Membrey took too long in disposal and slowed our attack down, allowed the oppo to set up for us. He also hadn't been as accurate as he was as a younger player.

We should now investigate the same type of deal for other seniors such as Steele.

Win win deals are fine.
Minor thing but we didn’t trade membs did we? Delisted so he could sign elsewhere.

It doesn’t matter his currency was nothing but we didn’t get anything for him

Moving on Membrey was the right call but we shouldn’t have stopped there. We can’t keep half doing this rebuild, we need to commit 100% to it and add to the good group of youngsters we’ve already got.

What I said was reported on by Jon Ralph at the end of that game.

I don’t know 100% what happened. I just know Hawthorn got involved. We all know how it ended. I’ve also said both sides to the equation probably didn’t cover themselves in glory.

Again, doesn’t make what I said wrong.

If you said he was signed or it was imminent and then he left then you’d be wrong wouldn’t you?

You’d get more credit here just taking the L tbh “I was wrong but I wasn’t really wrong cause it was what someone else told me that was wrong”.

In any event given your sources got that one wrong your supreme confidence in TDK from club sources is weird.

Battle was SIGNED but things changed but there’s NO WAY that could happen again.

So it feels like the narrative around some of our targets is changing.
Aleer potentially staying because he's getting games.
We're not even mentioned in Bergman trade talk at the moment and
TDK is having secret meetings with Carlton heavyweights again.
Got me very worried that were not going to get anyone despite our financial position and we will lose that built up cap space for no benefit.
Success feels a very long way off at the moment

Given what I shared was reported by one of footys biggest journos.

Then what I shared was correct at the time.

That’s the point.

If I’m hearing the club is confident in TDK is coming - then I’m confident that is the state of play today.

These things change. That’s the nature.

What I’m explaining and have explained enough times and if you want to continue being a flog who is splitting hairs here you can send me a Pm - is that at that moment the information was spot on. Just like my follow up that he was leaving and we would get band 1 was correct and ultimately the final outcome.

Both things can be and are true.

Don’t be like that 😂😂

I really don’t have much skin in this, really just being devil’s advocate here but you did say that a deal with Battle was imminent, on multiple occasions evidently, it wasn’t. Your words: “Battle deal coming”.

If you came out and just said the club had put an offer in front of Battle that would’ve been different story.

For a bit of context, Jon Ralph reported that talks were progressing under a deal - very different to “deal coming”.

Strange, you are now using Battle scenario as saying your mail is correct.

“At the time” so, if I say TDK is resigning with Carlton right now for 10 years at 2m a year, my sources are impeccable THEN he comes to us in September I would still be right because at one point he was gonna sign?

Seems like the only one splitting hairs here is the same bloke confident in information from sources that got it totally wrong last year to me.

Makes me even more sure TDK isn’t coming… but Stav and his sources will be still be correct somehow

Sorry but if you don't have a winning culture then you can't gut your list and expect it to go well.
We've dispatched a lot of non performing seniors in the last years and there's not many of them left. The job is basically done already.

Still doesn’t mean you are going to trade him at his lowest value. But more importantly majorly increase TDKs.
FA occurs before trading period. They can't really offload McKay before FA and there is always a risk there is no takers of his huge contract and capital asking price.

What I said was from sos. Later that night Ralph came out with his story - which was sourced from the club. Likely the same person.

That information was correct. The club evidently happy to share the above.

Things happened.

I then shared months later they were expecting him to go and confident in band 1.

Same source.

Neither was wrong. Both correct.

Things change.

Again, that’s the point - at the time of the info. It’s been spot on, I’m using Ralph’s reporting to evidence that what I was told and shared that night was the same confidence the club was sharing publicly when asked.

They overlap for a few days at the end of FA and start of trade period.

Same as the FA deals heaps of pre trades are discussed before that period.

If Carlton is going to be offloading a McKay or Walsh (or most decent players) they’ll have a pretty good idea of which ones they are before FA opens.

I feel the need to be clear about what I’m saying given the semantics of what everyone is saying.

TDK at the current offers seems assured to be a saint next season. The gulf between ours and Carlton’s offers is too much BUT just like Battle, stuff moves and Carlton always winds up being a player in player movement. If they get a buyer for a McKay (who is absolutely surplus to needs for them) or Walsh (similar to the McKay) which gives them cap room to retain TDK and look at another need (small forward anyone) then the TDK landscape shifts.

To me, saying TDK is happening 100% is insanity.

So Battles situation changed but TDKs can’t.

Got it.

I’ve explained it. Don’t need to justify it any further or care if you believe it.
