Pardon my ignorance - is the TDK thing similar to Hannebery where we had a bunch of space saved up over the years and had to use it or lose it or are we just burning a ton of actual cap space?

The Brisbane Lions have received another boost with premiership duo Darcy Fort and Logan Morris re-committing to the club on new deals. Fort has extended his stay by one year until the end of 2026, while Morris has signed on for two more years until the end of 2027.May 7, 2025

He and Xavier Lindsay looked incredible in the Metro v country match last year. Just ran like a rabbit to meet the ball and was off into attack with it as soon as he had it. I reckon he’s going to be a solid player at a bare minimum. To me he’s a pretty safe bet. Looks driven and competitive with solid skills. He’s a bit of an unexciting prospect because I think his scope for absolutely elite superstar level are a bit lower but his likelihood of being at least a good player are very high. The rest will need to come from the intangibles and they are hard to read.
Funny I see his scope as being much higher actually.

A couple reasons.
His run is elite
His marking is above average for his size.
His hands in tight are elite.
He is very defensively focused and a quality tackler.

We need to persist with his development as a mid imo. Don’t stop if it doesn’t work here and there. Keep at it.

For me it’s very hard to properly judge him when he’s having such low time on ground. For reference he’s been sub in 4/9 games he’s played including a game in which he wasn’t even activated.
Therefore you have to look back at his vfl form. He has already shown he is a level above that.

I think Tauru will make it because he has the ceiling mixed with the hunger.

Travaglia lacks polish and looks workmanlike but watch the standards he commands of others over the coming years. Top 5 runner at the club and there'll come a time where he makes a game saving tackle, win a one on one or break the lines with a running effort that will make him a fan favourite. We're all impatient and things needs to fall our way, but as RTB said, 'someone's gotta do the work to get us there'
Personally as an obsessive advocate for midfielders, I would have gone for Murphy Reid over Travaglia and taken Tauru.
Not sure on Lindsay as my favourite from the champs last year around our pick was Reid.
He has played well for Freo but seemingly more forward than midfield but reckon we missed one there.
Travaglia's dash of hb in the champs was eye opening even though he cost Vic Country the champs with a final minute 50 metre penalty.
I was pretty disappointed we didn't go for Reid but am willing to give Trav plenty of time.
Great to hear about standards he sets himself. Mentioned last night Wilson asked the coach to be dropped to the two to work.on his game and thought he contributed best almost this season last night.
Good to see the young runners are working to these high standards on their game.

Still think we need to find a ready made key forward for next year. I'm liking Keelers progress, but he's not strong enough yet. He'd benefit playing CHF to a bigger body I reckon.

No idea who is out there. Ideally in that 23-25 bracket we're sorely lacking.

RTB said last week that we have had do a list turnover because when he got here the list was at max salary cup and finishing 10th and 11th and you just can't have that. The club itself has said they got the top up period wrong
I jad forgotten about that. Youre absolutely correct.

Shows how shit gags and lethers were. Which given the base of finnis and trout. Anything would have been an improvement

Ready made key forward, ready for round 1 next year, should be fresh and ready to go... now where could I find one of those 😉 Man I hope Max comes good

One more thing regarding the criticism of recent drafting. I’ve mentioned this maybe a thousand times.

Firstly, feel free to criticise but KNOW that we are not using the same recruiter that we’ve had previously.

RIP -Toice
Liberatore
Trout

We have Simon Dalrympal who is now making our draft decisions.

This is the guy who drafted McRae
Bont
Stringer
Ed Richards
Baily Dale

Chad Warner etc etc.

This is not to say he is perfect.
What it means is, if you criticise our current draft choices and compare it to taking Billings before Bont or something like that … you need to understand how illogical that is.

Dalrympal is also known for finding absolute draft steals all over the draft.

Eg Max Hall is exactly the type of player Dalrympal would pick.

If Max Hall as a mid season selection is anything to go by, he’s had a pretty good start Dalrymple.

Some clubs boast 6 to 8 good mids on their list and you’d think that the ones not getting regular selection would want opportunity in a club that’s not that strong in that area. Seems odd that there isn’t more movement. You can only play reserves footy for so long before you contemplate giving up.
We must be able to identify at least 10 mids across the league that would contribute to our list surely.

Looking at VFL disposal averages:

Riley Garcia
Brayden Fiorini
Elijah Tsatas
Henry Hustwaite
Jhye Clark
Seamus Mitchell
Deven Robertson
Oskar Baker
George Stevens
Will Phillips
James Leake
Ollie Florent
Zac Fisher
Bailey Laurie
Angus Sheldrick
Toby McMullin

I don't know much about most of those but none of them look like world beaters?

How much impact are they having though, really?

Fin Macrae
Will Phillips
Chayce Jones
Archie Perkins
Will Brodie
George Stevens
Tom Berry

All at different stages but much the same idea: New coach, new environment etc means you maybe get their development going again and you end up with a player.

Are we better off grabbing these guys for basically nothing, and chucking them in with the likes of Dow, Clark, Byrnes etc or trying to pick up someone like Cerra/Walsh for 75c on the dollar?

I think a fair bit will depend on how hard we transition from the older guys over the back half of the season.

Steele is fighting on but I can't imagine he's got much left in the tank. Maybe taking the pressure of captaincy away will help him squeeze another year or two out?

Hill, Jones, Webster and Wood have their moments (both good and bad) but they aren't going to be around when we are pushing for finals. You want the kids to earn it but surely getting games into the likes of Arie, Carroll, Travaglia etc has to take priority at some point.

So do we just hand the reigns to guys like Clark, Stocker and Dow, tell them "You've got 22 games to make this your midfield, otherwise the next generation is taking over." ?

Deven actually seems pretty good but is behind just a wall of ****ing outrageous talent at the lions. Jhye Clark is a first round draft pick developing the way Geelong develops players.

The rest are just a bit whatever

TDK is a win/win situation, no one else that we have thrown money at has entertained the idea of coming to us. I’m sure there’s been plenty more that we haven’t heard of but between Callaghan, LDU, De Goey, etc, we finally have a great free agent prospect in TDK.

Sure, he’ll cost a bomb, but the fact is he will cost nothing in terms of draft picks.

I’d rather risk the high potential of TDK and hope it works out, rather than pay anymore to anyone on our list. We obviously still have
money to use across the board anyway, it’s not like targeting TDK will risk not being able to pay, NWM, Phillipou, etc.

Let’s just go with it and hope it transforms our team.

Riley Garcia - not a bad shout but a bit similar to our current Garcia
Brayden Fiorini - slow as a turtle, would prefer Hunter Clark
Elijah Tsatas - shit kick
Henry Hustwaite - slow and probably expensive
Jhye Clark - not bad but also likely expensive
Seamus Mitchell - half back, not a mid
Deven Robertson - shit kick
Oskar Baker - wing/HB, not a mid
George Stevens - Boxshall 2.0, not needed
Will Phillips - going to WCE and slow anyway
James Leake - recent first round draftee. expensive
Ollie Florent - recently re-signed with swans. we had interest last year when he was a FA but he rejected us
Zac Fisher - not a mid and hates contact
Bailey Laurie - slow. prefer garcia
Angus Sheldrick - expensive and absolute hack
Toby McMullin - not bad but probably expensive too

A few good options in there but they'll come at a cost - likely second round pick which could be worth it but we have Fincher coming through who needs to be matched and are already missing our 2025 second rounder

Clark is the one I'd be most interested in but we already have plenty of young developing mids and I doubt Geelong let him go

We already have Garcia/Boxshall/Travaglia not in the 22 who will push for midfield minutes. I say invest in them and target top-line mids (Butters) while they develop

Can I just say... And I dont know if it will be popular call or not.

I reckon TDK is a mistake.
I would rather blow the money on Oliver in exchange for a pick. Its looking like a longer rebuild is required.

Trade Steele for Oliver, Dees second and their future first.

They get out of the Oliver contract, but have to reward us with a future first. We have to spend the money.

We have 2 top 10 picks in 2026 to pair with what looks like a top 5 pick this year. 3 more cracks at elite youngsters. We are going to have to wait longer and do this through the draft.

Paying massive overs for blokes is a road to nowhere.

Can see it now.

Nas leaves, TDK stays at Carlton for unders, Marshall requests a trade, king loses his leg, pou joins Nas.
Keep going...

Caroline Wilson ousts Bassat and Lyon, becomes St Kilda's first female president, installs her board including "celebrity" luminaries such as Ray Chamberlain and Damien Barrett, they install Jordan Lewis as CEO and James Hird and Matthew Lloyd as coach and assistant, trades Travaglia, Tauru and frdp for a 31-yr old Jordan DeGoey, Wilson loses a leg in a drunken crocodile surfing competition in the NT, blames St Kilda who had their preseason training up there, Lewis and the board do a deal to move St Kilda back to Seaford and change our name to Linfox Southern SAINTS in a pioneering sponsorship move which helps to pay for the new training centre with built in MacDonalds which is designed to bring the entire Mornington Peninsula to the club.

Meanwhile all our ex-players who played for other clubs profess loyalty to the other club and the father son rule is scrapped then brought back after the sons of all our greats turn 21 at rival clubs. In a fit of panic, Wilson somehow passes a law stating that any member who wishes to opt out of the Easypay membership option has to pay a "leaving fee" of $40,000 and all members must have SAINTS 4 LIFE forehead tattoos at the age of 15.
