Absolute insanity to me that McGovern is retained.

To this point, GW and co have been making all the right moves to reset the culture of the club. Very disappointing.

I would've preferred Derksen, Frost, Phillips, Blight, or even ... Mason Cox.

Still think there's a good chance we pick up one of these types.

I’m disappointed that we haven’t been able to upgrade McGovern during this draft period and have to retain him - but you can’t fix our problems in one or two off seasons.

The real work started last off season, we’ve had another big turn over this one.

Next years offseason will see the last stage complete (McGovern, young, Boyd, Fog etc) and it’ll be a new look team in 2027.

Binns is a very interesting one. If nothing else he runs and finds the footy - averaged just under 20 touches in his 4 full games this year, which is good for a second year wing (much better than Ollie Hollands at the same age). Problem was everything else - disposal, decision making, positioning, etc. But you would think those things could be learnt with time.

Surely gets another try somewhere else. West Coast are trying to get anyone with a pulse at the moment and Binns had 26 and a goal against them late in the year.

I think there is a Bigfooty consensus on McGovern and his impact on 'culture' that is completely at odds with how he is seen by the club and almost anyone in footy land.

McGovern is a good solid player who unfortunately gets injured any time he tries to play as a forward for more that 2 weeks, but is otherwise pretty solid as a roaming key defender, a position in which we are woefully thin.
He is a better fit for the mobile backline that Voss has tried to play than anyone named. The fact he can play forward for a few weeks before injury inevitably hits is a bonus given we won't have Kemp or Curnow this year

Mitch Cleary has just reported that Young has signed for another year.

Can we take Dean, someone else and Ison in the draft and elevate Lord. Then keep White?

Just looking through the uncontacted layers, trying to find a way the club may keep Lij. How Boyd, Fogarty and Binns were given 2 year extensions before their previous contracts were up is beyond a joke. All should have been on 1 year extensions based on their ability (fog/Binns) or the fact the coach wouldn't play them. Acres until 27 I can't even fathom.

Still crossing my fingers we cut fog and Boyd anyway.

We can... sorta. We're starting at 33-7-2, 2 spots free.

1. Delist White, with guarantee to re-rookie. Gives us 3 picks at the draft. 33-6-2
2. Cut another player, probably Lij, gives us 4 picks at the draft. 32-6-2
3. Match bids on Dean and Ison, pick one player in the ND. 35-6-2
4. Upgrade a rookie. 36-5-2
5. Add White back in as a rookie.

Would give us 36-6-2, full list.

Disappointed in Binns being paid out.

But realistically he is behind Florent, Chesser, Acres, Hollands, Cottrell for a wing spot.

Played alright when given the chance at the top level. Wouldn't be surprised if he's given a shot at WC or Essendon.

List math is

Out: 9

Doc, Curnow, TDK, Fantasia, JSOS, Lemmey, Cincotta, Durdin, Binns

In: 5

Hayward, Florent, Chesser, Reidy, Ainsworth

Deduct 2 list spots for being SSP oversubscribed.

2 free list spots.

If Lij goes

3 spots.

Could delist White and train on for SSP place for HOF

I'd still like to get rid of 2 more seniors as well as Lij. Keep White, get Gresham and another KPP.

It's not that easy.

We have to get AFL sign-off on putting him on the Inactive List. That needs to be based on reasonable data indicating it is a season-ending injury.

If he recovers early, we'd then again need to get AFL sign-off, showing that something has changed from the original diagnosis, and he's now available to return. There would need to be a list spot available (e.g. another player going on to the Inactive List as you suggest).

To my knowledge, this has never happened (in the 7 or 8 years the Inactive List rules have been in place).
Ok I wasn't aware that we had to be certain it was a season ending injury, I'm not a fan of this mechanism then and would prefer an injury reserve and the ability to dig into the VFL list for standalone and affiliated clubs.
Disagree. A young kid having a carrot is very important. It was an August ACL and apparently tracking very well. If no issues he could easily be playing by July after having a heap of training

The benefits of coming back getting some games next year and then a pre season are huge.

They won’t play him unless he’s ready
Look I can agree with that in principle if there's the flexibility, but I'm disappointed that we're going to be down a player until at least July.
We've had 5 in and 9 out already on the senior list. Haven't we already got 4 list spots open? After Binns, I don't need to cut another senior listed player.
We had one list spot spare and brought in two via SSP and then a mid-season rookie through injuries. Jagga and Kemp are now back, so we have an extra two delistings to make to make our numbers.

It's fine to keep Gov. He has versatility and understands our system.

The others are sure to be delisted now. White, Flynn Young, Charleson and Elijah.

I feel for Will White who is blue-hearted and deserved more. Charleson is one who I think has something and I want to keep.

Flynn Young got some games, and to be honest, I was only impressed in one of them, possibly his last. I can see where we might have found upgrades but it's tough.

I'd be looking to move out Binns and Fogarty a year early.
Charleson I’d be keeping, re’rookie the kid another season, he’s knows how to football…

Your math doesn't make sense.
You cut White from the rookie list then re-rookied him

Problem (if you can call it that) is that we are already oversubscribed on rookies, so we have to fix that. I'm not 100% certain, but I think we need to fix it by the list lodgment next week, so I think that means cutting at least one current rookie (though we can commit to re-rookie).

Yes, that's right. We currently have 7 rookies, so we need to get rid of one. But we can commit to picking him up again in the rookie draft.

Edit: but we'd have to upgrade another rookie during the ND to create the free spot for White. Step 4 in list above.

It’s a really poor reflection on whoever was responsible for giving multi year contracts to players like Binns, Boyd, Fog

Binns has always put in the effort, really solid VFL player
Totally agree as he was recruited to the club as an outside mid who runs both ways, so why get rid of him now for playing that role? Perhaps someone at the club now sees him as perhaps not "hard enough" at it, and just wants players that are capable of both inside and outside efforts......hmn sounds like someone who used to play that way and was captain of the Lions in their early 2000s premiership years.......
