With the understanding that we will both have a fair whack of cap space to play with and some senior places to fill, it's worth thinking about what sort of deals we want to do.

First, unless the AFL 100% tells us we are not going to have access to Cody, we need to trade in a first rounder for next year.

If we improve even a little it will be very hard to match a bid in the top 5 without a second first rounder.

Second we need ruck Depth. It sounds like we have spoken with bothe Reidy (Freo) and Reeves (Haw). Both should be gettable for a nominal draft pick 40+.

Third, we need experienced KPD depth (if JSOS goes). Preferably with AFL experience. O'Farrell injury and Dean's first year make this tough.

This could be an SSP (Phillips, Grainger-Barass) but would prefer a more high ceiling option.

Fourth, we want pace and skill preferable off the HB line, either a high draft pick or trade in. This would probably be looking at getting a value add like D'Ambrosia was at Hawthorn.

Fifth, guaranteeing Dean and Ison. Got to play the shell game with other teams and figure out where the bid is likely. Lot of contingency planning with this.

Say the Zac Butters rumours are true and I hope they are. He'd complete our midfield and bring us into the modern age, should be a huge priority for us. A midfield group of Butters, Smith, Walsh, Cerra, Cripps, Hewett and Lord is extremely appealing to me and gives us the opportunity to play modern football.

How do we get him? Contracted for next season but is an RFA following that.

I would think Port would want something better than what they will get compensation wise. Our compensation pick for DeKoning will be higer than their pick for Butters. Has to be. So perhaps it involves ontrading the DeKoning compensation pick to them. I would imagine the DeKoning pick being quite high.

Silvagni could go, if it is Collingwood, their draft capital is as good as ours, first pick is 33. 33 in a good draft is a decent pick but reports say this draft is weak so we might want something next year. Pick 34 and Silvagni for Collingwood's future first? If the pies think they are top 4 again they might take it and will take it if they think Silvagni is important to them. As the ladder stands for both sides, it's only moving the pick a bit. It could help us with draft currency for Walker and could open up trading a future first if something comes up.

Just on Silvagni to Pies. Jeremy Howe is 35 and starting to get regular injuries. He's crucial to their setup and freeing up Moore. Silvagni steps straight into that role for them so yes, he would be very valuable to them and they may pay well for him. We know we have Dean and O'Farrell coming. Young can hold down the fort and McGovern is still in play so we can afford to make some moves here. 2026 I still see as a development year for Carlton and 2027 is the season I expect us to come roaring back into contention. Dean and O'Farrell should be cherry ripe by then.

Effectively trading TDK for Butters and getting a first but losing this years second for Silvagni and going into next year with two firsts? Is that possible?
Couple of things - Why on earth would Silvagni choose to go to the Pies with a list that is about to fall off a cliff over say going to the Bulldogs where he could be the difference between them just missing finals and being a top 4 chance.

Secondly we will just get AFL compo for Silvagni - fingers crossed it is an end of first round pick at worst.

Third - if we picked up Butters I really don't see where Cerra fits - Walsh, Butters, Smith, Cripps, Hewett and Lord running through the midfield with Moir, Williams & Motlop (possibly E Hollands) rotating through from the forward line - I just can't see Cerra fitting in (despite our 5 years contract extension)

Fourth - if Butters leaves next year Port will be in a similar position to us with TDK - getting screwed over with a mid first round pick - so if we were able to offer them our TDK compensation, our Silvagni compensation - McGovern who does help fill a need down back (and I would even throw in Cerra if possible) - they might be tempted

With Jsos going, Hof out for 12 months and people wanting to jettison mcgov are you happy with our tall backs being weiters, young and an 18 year old Dean??? Interesting....
McGovern is not a KPD and you can’t rely on him to stand up anyway.
If you’re putting MM in there then you need to cover with Haynes.

We might wrangle a fourth rounder for McGovern from someone.

I think you'd have to be a pretty desperate club to be chasing Mitch McGovern let alone giving anything of value for him.

I wouldn't trust him if I were a young club looking to help establish standards.

His body hasn't been trustworthy across the journey and I think he's someone who needs continuity rather than building into it like Geelong was able to Martin who's problem was getting on the park - was almost always able to compete when he was able to get out there.

Had Jeremy's career not ended the way it did West Coast may have been an opportunity but no longer.

Its a balance given cripps and hewett's age, but I agree it feels like in the short term we end up with one too many midfielders

Cripps will turn 31 at the start of 2026 and Hewett will turn 30 at the end of this year - lets assume probably worst case scenario and we just get 2 years out of both of them - we will have a year experience with Cody at that point - Lord & Smith should be starting to be front line mids rather than supporting players and you would like to think one of the Camporeale brother might emerge as a legitimate AFL player - I really don't see the need to keep him to help us cover an age gap

If we lose Jack we should keep McGovern. He has horrible moments but he's a pretty decent footballer.

If Jack stays, I'd be more open to losing McGovern.

I think this will be the clubs positiom as well
I wonder if the club was waiting and seeing r.e. McGovern getting back into the team and hitting that trigger.

Maybe now he didn't we can slightly up the offer to JSOS. Not that I'm super keen to overpay him, but if the difference is $50k-$100k then perhaps we do it now.

Yea I am. Expectations on 2026 are low. We need to finish in the bottom 6 in order to still gain access to Cody Walker. Can the fan base handle a blip to then return to finals in 2027?

I expect Kemp will go back to play the Gov role as Moir will take the third tall role up forward.

I am not pushing him out the door but if he could be a piece that gets us a quality hard running mid with good footskills I would be happy to lose him

No - mediocrity acceptance is how we destroyed what we had for 100 years.
Also, we don’t need to finish bottom 6 to get Cody.

We might. If they lock out the first round, how else do we get him?

So since we still haven’t heard, does anyone think TDK is a chance to stay?

If the money being reported is accurate, and not subject to heaps of conditions and triggers as some allege, no chance he stays.

I would be very surprised. Free agents tend to sign mid year and not at the end of the home and away season. Of course it’s possible, but everything points to he’s gone.

I wouldn't be offering him within $800k of what the Saints reportedly have. No chance he stays, nor should he, with that significant a difference over 8 yrs he'd be insane to.

Hoping BK is not returned to a defender.. not a very good one IMO

Both play the same / similar position and both are injury prone, so more than happy if one of them moves on.

Our current list is way too injury prone.

Would prefer to keep JSOS over Gov.
