Geelong’s player development of players from the second tier like VFL etc is elite - sure they identify good talent but they nurture and make them better - I liked Mannagh but would we have been able to turn him into a good small forward - not sure 🤔. In any case Darcy Hogg would be worth a shot, if he’s anything like his father he will leave no stone unturned to get the best out of himself.
His father was a real competitor. I see a lot of potential in him, to me he looks like a good athlete, has a lot of great traits but just needs to go from VFL level fitness to AFL level. I would say that he is a genuine half forward and that is something which we lack. I would also think that he has the ability to play other positions.

Geelong do a lot right but they also have a lot going for them. One of the big things is that they are a Victorian club, where most of the AFL playing group are from but they are not Melbourne and there are a hell of a lot of players who would prefer to not live in Melbourne so there's a huge group of players who want to be there. If you add that they have been hugely successful since 1989 and particularly this century, they are the ultimate destination club. Since the AFL destroyed it's equalisation system, they take full advantage of that. Geelong have been ahead of the rest of the clubs for a long time. Their reputation and their location make them a very desirable team to be in.

For us, I hope we don't think that we should behave any differently because we believe our abilities and capabilities are less than Geelong. We need to be as much like them as we can. What really annoys me is that you see teams like Geelong and Collingwood taking in A grade players as easy as just going to the shops and get them. Selwood retires they get Smith. They will do the same when Dangerfield gives it away, they probably already have Butters or someone alike lined up to replace him. Collingwood will do the same with Pendlebury and Sidebottom. What are we going to do? Take more fringe players in from other clubs and hit the draft?

As for Mannagh, he's a good one, I think he would do well for us however our team and the way we play does not support forwards well. We go around the boundary a lot, don't run with the footy and we carry too many poor kicks. Question with us is when do we improve on this and allow our forwards to flourish?

I don't think that's entirely true. Probably not up to hoilding down a key role yet but trending well with 10.6 in nine games and looking to have clicked in the second half of the season from making up the numbers to a genuinely trustworthy kick at goal.

I think he can kick 20-30 goals next season playing as a leadup FP while improving his size and tank.
With a good pre season, Ashton is in the sweet spot for a break out. 20-30 possibly even a little conservative.

I believe our list management team has done a spectacular job of regenerating on the run. It shouldn’t be long before most realise we have all but locked in the next generation.

I can’t pretend to be in the know regarding the negative forces within our group. What I can say is we are in position to weed out the conditional players this year and absolutely completing the exercise next off season. There are enough solid best 22 types emerging from mostly budget acquisitions to set us up for a decade.

A little luck with our top end would be spectacular. Crippa to stay healthy for a last hurrah as a star of the game. Walsh to discover how to manage his back issues to realise his potential on a regular basis. Harry to assume the role as the key forward pillar, assuming Charlie gets his wish. Weitering to have a solid year before the coming together of a new look defence in 2027 with O’Farrell and Dean forming a formidable defensive tall trio.

Wish Buku nothing but the best with you guys sad to see him leave but understand AFL Career is short and needs the opportunity to play at the highest level
Interested to know how you see him as a player B85, his strengths and weaknesses, any potential level of upside either as a forward or defender, cheers…

I would play him as a forward but when the ball hits the ground he doesn’t apply any pressure has a beautiful kick for goal . As a defender he was ok but last year against Fremantle Buku got destroyed and clubs started isolating him one on one

Reville yes please, posted the same in the game thread. Not sure what he'd cost but it shouldn't be too expensive

We (Bris) re-signed him for 2026 earlier this year.

Baffling that no one got in his ear and offered more years. Has an above average AFL kick and would be playing regular footy in lots of teams 🤷‍♂️

Appreciate the feedback, from what I’ve seen of him watching games, im not overly enthusiastic about him as a player, i think he is more an athletic type than footballer….
Cheers…

He is very athletic maybe a change of clubs might do Buku well and you guys might get a the best out of him. Been on our list for 7 years and has played 41 games think the our club has tried everything also with Croft coming along Buku might see the writing on the wall

I don’t want to pigeon hole types based on race here, so excuse the generalisation but does Khamis display similar qualities as Aleek, CJ and Mac Andrew in terms of vertical leap and speed off the mark?
It seems that the Sudanese players have great athleticism particularly in those traits.

He has vertical leap like Aleek and Andrew Buku speed off the mark is ok but here is the mark he took this year against Essendon it’s the last one

Buku is what we need and that is depth. We have two key forwards on the list and if Curnow goes it will be 1. The pinch hitters like Young and O'Keeffe don't count and Moir and Kemp are not key forwards.

I don't think we are recruiting him for a best 22 spot but he will be good depth. We have been hamstrung by carrying too many players who have not been AFL capable like Lemmy for a good number of years, we need to have reserve senior players like this and young players who are able to play AFL football.

Lets see, this is an astute move. Nothing worse than being a cellar dweller or having a list full of kids in this age of football. We are rebuilding but it should be a short rebuild if we are successful here. Just a bit of a list tune up.

Most doggies supporters I've spoken to prefer him forward. If Charlie is traded I can see him forming a more mobile forward line with Kemp and McKay (Moir strong overhead for his size too), HOK also an option.
I can't. How many forwards do you think we need?
Our backline might as well have a revolving door on it, and we are forced flood our team back just to cover deficiencies as it is.
We need defenders first and for-most.

I'm not convinced that Buku is the answer there
I get it but if he goes forward, surely Kemp HAS to go back. Moir isn't suited, and we need players back there.
That said, I'd rather we persevere with part timers rather than give McGovern another contract.
