Does anyone else think Florent could return to the midfield given our list, adding speed in attack and delivering to Harry? I thought he played well as an on-baller for Sydney when paired with Kennedy and Mills. Sydney have a different midfield mix now but Florent could be valuable for us paired with Cripps in the midfield (and maybe Cerra).

(I’m also hoping this provides an opportunity for Jagga to play and develop at half back for a year)
Yes, I think he will play wing, if not he could be an onball rotation. We are short one smaller, quicker agile player in our onball group. I can see us half filling the spot with rotations, so definitely.

What do think about the following who don’t have contracts:

Lincoln McCarthy
Cameron Guthrie
Wade Derksen
Will Phillips

Cerra has been underwhelming in his time at Carlton. Has not reached the heights that we thought he would. Has had injuries and has appeared to become slower over the years for a player who should be in his prime. Yes played a few more games than the mentioned but has still been injury prone.

I don't think anyone here is going to believe that Cerra has delivered what we thought he would.

He has and has been good only by Carlton standards which we all know are also underwhelming and something we all hope will change.

And one of the trades we made (pick 6) to try and rectify our disastrous first round midfield drafting in Dow, Obrien, Seton and Stocker.

So it’s extra costly.

Having Davies and now Boak must mean were some chance of landing Zac.Surely.
Can’t see it!
Port have as much salary cap as anyone for next year’s draft. Could and would match any bid.
Our draft capital in ‘26 will be required for Cody Walker if a bid was matched.

Butters is a ripper, but will cost a king’s ransom, IF he can be shaken out.

Unlikely, but it's possible. There's a chance we trade some picks out of this year's draft to get a third 2026 first rounder. We would then hold 3 x 2026 and 2 x 2027 first rounders. I'm certain that would be more than enough to tempt Port into releasing him, should he choose us. That's the real sticking point. Everything hinges on how we perform next season.

Honestly I think it depends on the promise we show next year with a rejuvenated line up as well as the relationships he had with Voss, Davies, Boak, and Truslove. Maybe that gives us a bit of an inside running if he enjoyed working with those guys previously but who knows.

The Bulldogs supporters are super cocky thinking they have him in the bag but I don't think he's a lock to go there at all. Hawks will go super hard at him next year and will be more appealing than them. And we with the connections and an exciting list of youth as well as still a handful of star players will be massively in the hunt. We have flexibility with draft pick capital too. Sure some gets taken up by Cody but we have 27 and 28 picks ro use and we may even try to shift one of our firsts this year back into next year if there are takers. A lot to play out but no point speculating this early.

I just hope ZB refuses to deal with HFC as he dislikes them as a team (as I do too).

So Cerra was leading our B & F late in 2023 when he got injured and came 3rd in this years. 2024 was a write-off with injury. It would seem that the coaching group have a far higher respect of his overall game and the total efforts that he puts in week in week out than you do.

Let me think - who should I take as a genuine guide about Adam Cerra - the inner sanctum or anonymous internet poster that seems to have a grudge??

Sounds like one of those good ordinary players that everyone says we need more of

Sort of.

We gave up too much & Cerra is too talented to settle for a 'good ordinary' midfielder - that's Hewetts job.

Cerra needs to impact more, a lot more. Or find a point of difference somewhere else, maybe high-forward where he has space to use his footskills (which seem to have disappeared), or else he's every chance to get pushed out of there in the next couple of years.

Only the bold remain on an AFL list...

Only 4 draft picks still at Carlton from Stephen Silvagni...

Only another 6 are still on an AFL list at another club... 4 of those are at St Kilda... Silvagni's new home...

Player shuffling has never been greater than it is right now. We've just added Ainsworth and Florent from the first round of that 2016 draft. Setters came and went too.

Only 3 players of the first 15 are still at the club that drafted them. Even in better years it's 5-7 still at their club.

Shame SOS wasn't better at nailing a few later picks though... bit of a wipeout apart from TDK. Only really found Cottrell off the rookie list too. Wasn't good enough in hindsight.

Where to people think E Hollands will play position wise if he is given another opportunity?

I would be willing to try him at half back. Two way runner, smart player, pretty hard at it, has looked good when playing wing and dropping back. But the main thing is that he is a very good field kick. Could see him as an accumulating half back who kicks accurately, runs all day and can pinch hit in the midfield.

I think spots at half forward are probably tied up with Ainsworth, Hayward, Kemp, Williams, Moir etc.

My guess is that he may well be staying, not sure we would still have a player on our list who we plan to offload, would have thought that would have been done by now as it would have been in the best interest for the player.

I really hope Carlton give Elijah another chance. You cannot underestimate how important players like him are to our list (from a sporting perspective)... there's just this gigantic void when it comes to guys who can bite off a tough kick and hit a teammate.

We hit our straps in late 2023 when Martin and Cunners were briefly fit at the same time and played that critical role of transition from the wing to the forward line. We haven't had any reliable players in this role since - apart from EH.

I know he's has "burned bridges" with the club but unless he robbed the CEO in the carpark at gunpoint he needs to be given another go. Even then we've changed CEOs now so...

Anyway - what a way it would be for this "new culture" post TDK/SOS/that other bloke to rescue a guy from the AFL scrapheap.

I might write a letter to GW. Seriously.

Unfortunately with Cripps, Pitto and Hewett in the midfield we really need the Cerra role to be a speedy line-breaker type.

He's too slow. I think he needs to find another position out of the middle.

One of our major problems up forward has been that so many of our blokes are shit-scared of kicking a set shot.

McGovern, Motlop, Durdin, Curnow, Fogarty were/are all guilty of it. Cripps and Williams are borderline. Harry used to be, but I don't put him in the same category anymore as he put his head down and worked through it.

At least Frank wants the ball in his hands when it's time to kick a goal, he wants every shot he can get. Moir, Ainsworth, and Hayward are similar, they WANT to be kicking at goal, rather than dreading it. It should hopefully provide a decent boost up forward this year.

You're forgetting most of Frank's career and remembering the last 3 or 4 games with this post.

Get on the typewriter please.

An explanation would be good for how we’re failing to support our player like other clubs have for what appear more serious incidents - EH has stated his problem and working through it.

We shouldn’t really have these 3 midfielders in the centre at once anyway but they’re all centre square mids.

Cez does need to recapture his kicking boots.

I don't like being that pest supporter who emails the club... but I might make an exception. I've only emailed the CEO twice in the past 20 years. Got a response both times to be fair to the club.

No doubt we only got 10% of the full story with that article in the Age but there's obviously determination on his side to stay at the club which is important.

Yeah you can't be playing the role Cez is playing and butcher the ball like he did in the second half of the year. It's like he had that Mick McGuane injection.

Jagga and Cody will be coming for his spot - and there are always the flankers rotating through there also... so he needs another spot. Maybe he can play half back or wing?

CC me in :)

I love Butters, but personally I’d be throwing everything at the other Zac as the Lions won’t match an offer for him and he will be free. And with Walsh, Jagga, Cody, B Campo, Cez and Lord a forward mid like Zac Bailey is more of a need vs a pure play mid like Butters, as elite as he is. There would also be about a 600k price difference… I’m all aboard the Z Bailey train!
