You can’t argue that we need to play Erasmus ahead of JOM cause he’s younger and at the same time say we need to play aish instead of Worner. Pick a lane.

My lane is pick the better player to play the position you need filled.

JOM is better than Erasmus. No one said he wasn’t.

Aish is better than Worner. You can’t tell me otherwise. Think it stays that way for 2-3 more years too. And when Whan comes in end of the year after that 2-3 years is borderline irrelevant.

If we’re picking for a sub, Erasmus is clearly a better option than Worner.

There’s also a duty of care list management wise to give a first round inside mid games when we’ll have two best 25 or so inside mids retire in a year or so. When Erasmus leaves for a 4th rounder that’s not an asset we can realistically use to replace him with.

Not every first round pick makes it at AFL level, Sutcliffe and Sheridan were early picks.

Poor skills and slow decision making, fine in the WAFL but gets exposed at AFL level.

Not one of those players is a Bona fide inside mid or first possesion/clearance mid tho

I mean for starter’s odriscoll is already playing there ,
Bolten is fwd first with stints mid and is already doing that now

Chapman has not as far as I know played any inside mid minutes and if /when he does it’ll be as a winger -and jlos still hasn’t trialled him in a game for any extended period even there yet

Reid I ageee will eventually be starting mid but asking him to do inside grunt work in his second yr and considering the value he brings to our team currently in other positions would be very poor player management

And finally picketts just like Bolten but with even less mid time , especially considering we desperately need both as fwds the majority of game

Who do we replace Chapman or Reid with if we play them midfield?

I think eventually we can do it but at this stage I’m quite liking what Reid is offering as a forward. A small forward drafted this year or next could take over but I’m not sure Reid is quite ready for the bigger bodies inside.

Chapman I was really really big on in 2022 and he seems to be getting back to that level now. If moving Chapman to the midfield results in us playing Worner as a defender than Chapman can stay right where he is as far as I’m concerned.

Exactly and it was more like Pick 90+ given how compromised that draft was due to GWS entering the league the next year. There was probably 20+ players taken out of that draft before it even started.

Sheridan is hard to say but he’s at least in the late-20s, maybe even early-30s if you put all those guys back in.

FWIW these guys weren’t drafted but were either pre-selected by GWS or traded away by Gold Coast/GWS: Adam Kennedy, Dayne Zorko, Luke Brown, Jamie Elliott, Tom Bugg, Jeremy Cameron, Jack Hombsch, Dylan Shiel, Adam Treloar, Nathan Wilson, Josh Bruce, Curtley Hampton.

I only named the ones that are good in hindsight - there’s probably a few others rated higher than Sheridan at the time and most probably at least a dozen others rated better than Sutcliffe.

If you need a depth midfield extractor / accumulator, you can head to the AFL equivalent of the $2 reject shop and pick one up, they are a dime a dozen (which really doesnt help Ras). Noddy, Jackson, Bolton, Serong, Young, Brayshaw, JOM, Johnson, Reid, Pickett/Warner is more than enough options if we lose Ras AND Brodie in one offseason

Thats plenty of mids for centre bounce rotation

I didn't include the wing role, Sharp is obviously one, then Noddy and Johnno cover at other times (they obvs won't be centre bounce full time)

this is projecting in the future, I don't expect Reid to be a forward for long, you can possibly move Bolton down to the pitch hitting spot but he could easily play full time mid if required through injury

Don't buy this. There's people who talk about Ethan Stanley still, and many more who did a while back (MSD). Cooper Simpson gets brought up a lot and some are excited about a potential half back move (pick 35). Dudley has played 1 decent game and some are ready to crown him over Switta (SSP). There's a bias towards "newer toys", but it goes well beyond Neil's pick status.

If there's some "sunk costs fallacy" going on (there probably is), there's also an inability to see first rounders in anything except 1 of 2 extremes. They're either successes or bums. No room for differentiating btwn the likes of Josh Simpson, Michael Apeness, and Marcus Drum and the likes of Griffin Logue, Tom Sheridan, and Hayden Crozier. All we see is 6 players who aren't Caleb Serong, so they all must be equally failures.

Some who are pro-Ras need to remove the pick 10 blinders. But some on the other side of that need to get over the fact that he'll never be the right pick over NWM. In hindsight and with a time machine everyone would undo that. We don't have time machines. So just assess him like you would any other fringe player. It's not like you're paying pick 10 twice either way.

For me I wanted to see what his level was with some continuity, I’m concerned about our size in the middle post Fyfe and JOM.

But I understand that we are in win now mode, so the club need to pick the best side as they see it.

Fortunately for JOM he played probably his best game for us before he went out.

As you said in earlier post my big worry is that Erasmus ****s off end of the year and Aish delisted , only to then have Fyfe pull the pin , Brodie obviously gone and of course JOM the following year and all of a sudden we have virtually zero big inside mid depth outside of shuffling players from other positions.

So whilst we meant to be smack bang contending we’ll be back to first /second yr draftees for our immediate depth in the most crucial part of the ground.

All at the same time Ras will still be ONLY 22/23

But what really annoying to me is this idea of “ oh we’re not in the stage gifting games “ , our aim is to compete in big finals blah blah
but tell me what the **** have these people seen from this team so far this year(after perhaps the greatest talk up of prospects pre season from a freo team in I can remember since RTB days , you know when ACTUALLY played off in big finals) to suggest we’re anywhere near that stage of development yet?
In fact at the rate this teams progressing we’d be lucky to make finals

People on here are deluded if they think that our midfield can win a flag without the size advantage in the centre.
This year we have seen what Brayshaw, Serong, JOM have done, and we got bullied by the Cats and couldn’t get over the line of the Swans.
Sure Young will come back, but the better coaches rotate and use all the flanks to play
dual positional players.
Worner, Wagner, Banfield, Aish even JOM are depth players.
As for saying add Reid, Simpson to the midfield, it’s just adding to the size issue.
Erasmus and Johnson need games, which has worked finally with Johnson.
Winning finals is pressure footy and you have to win contested ball.
If Sam Mitchell traded JOM, and a Brownlow winner to build a power midfield then
I’d take his vision over ours.
Sure we may make finals? But we are not talking premiership contenders.
Team selection has failed in 2023-2024, and our so called quality list isn’t doing the
heavy lifting required.
If we are adding Reid, Simpson to the rotations then yes if the balance is right.
That means. Brayshaw, Serong also rotate.
We lose Fyfe, Walters, JOM, Aish and

Erasmus should be in over Worner. We have enough defenders.

In terms of depth, if we get Pickett he fills that gap.

When Whan is drafted Worner should be punted at the first opportunity.

And in terms of inside mids we also have Lucas Robinson coming in 2026. Let’s hope he keeps progressing.

Long term especially if we get Pickett, and obviously Young is fit I’d like Brayshaw on Sharp’s wing.

I think Brodie was great for half to three quarters of a season.
He'd already started declining in 2022 as his outlet handballs were countered and teams started exploiting his weaknesses more and more.

Like a more extreme version of Reidy, players who aren't making the team get pumped up when people are dissatisfied with team performance and almost take on a life of their own.

If he wanted off Broadway there'd be Brisbane, Sydney or Geelong.
If he wanted to stay in Melbourne I imagine it'd be a big club, most likely Collingwood.

Surely of those 3 Trac would be the priority given how all over the shop Oliver has been, and how little they'd trust Pickett long term.
