He is the type of player who could play well until mid 30's.

5 years of A grade football is worth a lot.

It is very fair offer, but I wouldn't call it overs.

That first phase of his career might come back to hurt later, he played 45 out of 88 games in his first four years. Just the one the year he moved.

That Brisbane magic getting chronically injured players on the park worked while he was there.

If Merrett and Barrass were the missing pieces for the Hawks it makes sense that they'll have traded three first round picks, two second round picks, a third round pick and a player for them.

They really are going to be all chips in.

Last year they had pick #35 and #64, don't think either played this season.
2023 they took Watson at #5, McCabe at #19 and hasn't played a game yet then Ryan and Dear (F/S) at #46 and #56. Dear looks good.
2025 could be starting at #43 this year

If the Hawks don't strike in this window they could be missing for a while and Mitchell could walk off into the sunset, leaving behind a team with nothing coming through.
fingers crossed

Nobody is playing A grade footy at 35. Certainly not midfielders anyway. They will get 3 years at the top if they are lucky. 2 would be the median expecation and he's one back injury or bad hammy from it being 0.

It's all chips in already even before they come back with an upped offer.

zorko, gawn, gunston, elliot, libba, sidey all aorund that age id say going at a very good level.

merrett will defo been in the mould of zorko and go to the backline at the latter stage of his career, brilliant user of the footy

As per the other post above ... plenty of players are at a high level well into their 30's. Eastern states clubs seem to be extending the careers of players out further these days.

Easy to have the Freo glasses on when looking at age, because 30 for Freo is a completely different kettle of fish with all the travel. It's one of the huge disadvantages we have.

And while Hawthorn have some youth to their list, their chances are also heavily reliant on Gunston, Sicily, Barrass, Amon, Impey who are 30+. One could argue they need Merrett even more than Essendon need a few OK/average picks and a VFL plodder.

Libba is the only player over 32 ranked in the top 50 midfielders this year. There are no players over 30 in the top 15. The higest ranked midfielder in the competition this year over 33 was Sidebottom at 54.

All the players listed above are either not midfielders or have been shifted from the midfiled back or forward. As means of strengthening their midfield, its a very high priced short term play. Sure I agree Merrett will likely end his career at half back, but you don't trade multiple first rounders for that. BTW I'm not saying the gambit can't work: it might well get them a flag. But they won't be getting 5 years of A grade footy.

I'm torn on this cause I don't actually think Merritt moves the needle enough for Hawthorn and the deal could blow up in their face an send them into purgatory for years ahead.

But I also don't want to take the chance

Hawks have gone in hard for an opposition club's best player and captain - humiliating his club and fans - without being willing to pony up a decent offer. They had better put up a player of value - probably one they don't want to lose - as well their top picks for this year and next for Essendon to even consider this. Sydney have come to the party - that's a serious offer. Regardless of what you think of Florent and Haywood, they will help Carlton, AND they added the top picks.
This is all on Hawthorn and I hope Merrett sees it this way and Essendon reject everything until a serious deal is offered.
Just my take on it all :)

Well the sun does set in the west so if he wants to do that and take over here then leading Freo to a flag having previously run hawthorn into the ground and failed I’d be all for it
