Back by popular demand. However...

There has been some aggro from publishers of articles in recent months about sites that copypasta their content onto other sites, particularly the paywalled ones, which could lead to fines and whanot for those that do it. Apparently there are copywrite laws for these things. As a result we can no longer have full articles reposted here, so if you come across something then please refrain from nabbing the whole thing and just post the link. Quoting a paragraph or two and linking the source is fine however, just don't get greedy.

Here's the updated site-wide rule: https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/please-read-re-copyright-posting-newspaper-articles.1389553/

Here's an example of what you can do:

"If West Coast was the gold standard for how to operate, then Fremantle's arrival into the AFL in 1995 could be viewed as a series of cautionary tales.

Despite eight wins in that debut season, a series of poor recruiting choices meant they didn't play their first final until 2003."

If they believe that us not making finals until 2003 was solely due to "a series of poor recruiting choices" then I have a bridge to sell them.

Thanks for your understanding.

Why does Squiggle hate us so much?

We're on top of the last 10 weeks form ladder, have beaten 6 of the other top 9, we are projected to have more wins than GWS and Hawks, yet our range is apparently 7th-8th and finishing below them both. We're also about 9th on the Power Rankings. At least as of this morning anyway.

Meanwhile, Dogs are number 1 on the power rankings and were still projecting as 9th this morning.

Make it make sense.
Squiggle is fully on board regarding the power of Dockery.

I suspect we'd be ranked a bit higher if the Squiggle used xScores but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. For whatever reason the xScore bot didn't do the derby last weekend, but I bet you that'd have been a 80 point win not 49 and we'd have moved further up.
Overall xscore I think we're like 3rd lowest of the top 9 for differential so we would definitely move up a bit.

I also think taking emotion of it we're not quite the finished article.

One of the xScores (wheelo I think) actually had as bang on the expected which was weird.

People tend to remember bad misses as wasted chances, but don't really consider unlikely goals as a lucky breaks. Freddie, Jackson, Amiss, and Bolton all kicked low percentage goals from the boundary. Those and a few other would counteract the bad misses in the expected score.

Stats 100% have a place in the game and there wouldn't be a single club that doesn't use them as a means to improve or counter opponents gameplans.

The issue is which stat gets the credit and its correlation to winning that makes it contentious.
They are worthless and keep people like King employed, where he really shouldn't be.

They aren't worthless. King doesn't use them properly. He just cherry picks the ones that fit his agenda.

Interestingly, this week on SEN, Hoyne from Champion Data whittled off some stats about corridor use. I reckon the word 'corridor' came out of King's mouth 15 times in the first quarter alone last night.

Didn't we have someone on here saying Fyfe was a culture killer because he refused to play for Peel? With Fyfe it is all "me me me".
Im pretty sure Fyfe ran over se17enteen's dog though

Sounds to me like you really don't like King and stats are taking 98% of the blame.

It's more that because all the relevant stats (other than for fielding*) are recorded automatically as part of the scoring. You don't need a team of people watching and re-watching games to record post cleanance ground ball gets or something.

If you want to do some analytics, like to compare players relative performance to other players in the same games, rather than just use the absolute stats, you only need like one statto to do it. Not a whole company.

*I'm sure collecting stats like fielding errors or dropped catches might be useful, but it's probably not providing enough of a comparative edge to make it commercial given all the pathways are representative (no trades or drafts).
You've just gone deeper into my point.

An equivalent of Champion Data would be borderline useless in cricket as stats to measure performance are there without it. But the sport is obsessed with statistics more than just about any other.

If anything AFL has more raw statistics than more sports do but nothing measures overall performance like batting average or bowling average does. It's not a sport that's overly easy to measure performance by stats but it won't stop stats nerds from trying. I 100% think it has its place in the sport though.

Supercoach and now rating points try to do that but they are all slightly out of wack. Need to have spoils as a measure for defenders for instance so they get some more points & its very important if you are a stopper. The rating system is messed up as it over rates players that switch positions a lot as they might get midfield minutes and stats 50% of the time but only compared will all the small forwards etc.

As I said I think statistics have their place but only if people are smart enough to acknowledge the statistics are an incomplete picture of reality.

Even in cricket they sometimes are too. A guy that averages 45 on mostly roads is not a better batter than a guy that averages 43 on absolute green tops.

People shit on Champion Data but they use and come up with stats that the clubs ask them for. They aren't just coming up with random bullshit just for shits and giggles. Coaches will ask for a particular aspect of the game to be measured (eg. the pressure rating) and Champion Data have to come up with a way to measure it. It may seem useless to us and Hoyne comes across as a bit sanctimonious on SEN but the stats are there for a reason.

That's all well and good to have the stats there, but we don't need them to try and make inferences from them that aren't there

Actually, I read an in-depth piece based on an interview with a stats guy from a club (unnamed) who said nowadays they mostly just get the raw data from CD and run their own queries. I think the ones Hoynes comes up with are specifically designed as attention-grabbing talking points for media use.

“Mate, we need a song to celebrate our Freo Dockers.”

“What kind of song should we write?”

“Well, we both have mullets and mo’s that went out of style 30 years ago everywhere in the world except Australia, so how about a song that’s super retro and sounds like it was made by a shi**y 80’s hair band?”

“I knew kept you around for a reason ya stupid c***. That’s brilliant! Let’s fu**in do it!”

“It’s time to pull on the purple, ya nuffies!!”

If we win the big one, I shall be pulling on the purple in celebration... wait... actually still accurate.

That is brilliant. Should be played at Optus after every win.
