Autopsy 2025 Round 18: Swans swindle slow Saints

So what is everyone’s verdict on Heath’s debut? Aside from the good bloke vibe. Just straight down the line, did he make us better? More likely to win?
No doubt big Max is a ripping bloke but I'm not sure he will be playing too many more games for us , Its pretty obvious after yesterday Dodson will fly past him if he hasn't already

So Naz has been vilified online. That’s just sad 😢
It's disgusting.

Most people are fairly decent, but even if only one in one hundred is an arseh*le that means there are a hell of a lot of arseholes out there.

Hopefully this one lost his/her house on that bet, but unfortunately I don't have any faith in karma. :(

We get very little from not winning that game and the young lads in particular would have gotten a lot from winning that game. Professional sportspeople (like us all I guess) need to feel reward for effort and that reward needs to be looking up and seeing you have a higher score than the other team at the end of the game. Losing when more than three goals up in the second half can become habit forming.

Our list is in the best state it's been for a long time. We have a lot of super talented kids and older stars. We should be better than we are on the ladder. It's unbalanced and higher than average amounts of youth usually make for uneven performance but still underperforming.

Clubs like the Dogs, Swans and Cats can do soft rebuilds without major disruption. We need to do that. Not spend 5 years at the bottom wondering why we need to start again as all the senior players step out.

Only way you can do a soft rebuild is if your senior players have the leadership to build a winning culture while still performing themselves. We haven’t had that since Roo left, so we’ve been chasing our tails.

Those three clubs built, won flags and then were able to sustain it through soft rebuilds. It is what we would have done if we had kicked straight in 2009 or the ball had bounced a different way in 2010.

Also, lots of undeserved draft help.

Grundy won them the game in the last quarter by getting on top of Marshall including setting up the winning goal. Others that have recently gotten on top of us - Meek, Cameron, English, Witts. Even Reilly O'Brien smashed him earlier in the year.
Agree to disagree, our inability to get numbers to contest (in particular getting out of D50) lost us the game.

Not Roma.

Its probably just a philosophical disagreement about tap work.

Contracted, so don't have to trade.
If he wants out hes only gonna want out to a finals challenger (who needs a ruck) and Vic based id imagine.

Best case Collingwood or Geelong really. Not teams renowned for giving up firsts for 30 year old banged up guys IMO and again, if they do, theyre very very late firsts.

Marshall having a horrible restricted season off a fractured pelvis and apparently a foot injury being managed. He's not anywhere near his best right now.
That's fair but it would be a gamble to just leave the status quo and how he improves next year.

Honestly I just don't think Ross rates him as a one out ruck which is why we tried to get Soldo last year and now TDK

Geelong is the obvious one, Collingwood have a gun ruck already.

And you could also point out that we are the worst performed side in the league apart from WC over the last couple of months. Only St Kilda fans can get pumped about losses.

Having low standards and zero expectations has kept us shit. Other clubs have rebuilt twice since we started ours in 2012 and will finish their next one before us and Saints fans will be demanding patience.
No doubt we wasted 5 years on field to get the off field fixed. Possibly could (should) have done both but the AFL didnt give us a Jackson and Roos. We got the reject shop option as the helping hand.

Given our lopsided fixture though we are about where projected if we copped key injuries to areas where the list is thin and we did.

In the run in I don't think we can lose to Richmond or Essendon without obvious tanking. So beat those two and lose to Melbourne, North and GWS. Get pick 5 and a bottom 6 draw next year (unless the AFL again manages to forget that for us).

We are all on a wait and watch but I have hope with this group if we can add some pieces. The intangible "character" of this group appears to be more robust. Would love a Bobby Hill type and another key forward.

Patient yes. Annoyed yes. Frustrated yes. Demanding yes. I'm all those and more at the same time.

Was a fun game to be at, disappointing we couldn’t hold on in the end.

Tauru probably got brought back to earth a bit, he was pretty poor. Butler shame about his injury, but reckon he was headed for the VFL. Hill is just giving away multiple goals every week with a turnover or lack of intent (the one where he was scared of contact lolllll). Clark can do some wonderful things but he’s just so mediocre overall.

Max Hall is a wonderful player. Nas had a bunch of turnovers trying to do too much. Windhager played probably his best ever game, Steele was fantastic, best I’ve seen him play for years.

Moose should’ve had a few more shots at goal with free kicks being missed. I think he definitely holds his spot. Also shout out to Garcia who is playing well!

Not sure if Dow is fit enough but I’d bring him in for Clark. Collard for Butler, been poor in the VFL but we need a small forward. I’d love if Hill got dropped for Trav but can’t see it happening.

Another honorable loss, think we are heading in the right direction. However, I think the boys would be very disappointed letting it slip. Bring on the Cotton On Warriors!

A great effort yesterday, especially the second quarter, but...

The worrying problem is the older/ more experienced players fading later in the matches. Steele had had an up and down year IMO, but played very well up until later then faded and wasn't hitting the contests as hard, Clark is too slow with no effect as a sub, and Macrae gets the ball but probably in the same boat. Marshall has had an ordinary year IMO and for all the good things Hill does, he stuffs up equally as much, and Wood is all over the shop and seems to have lost his magic to impact a game. Wilke and Stocker put in good efforts over the game

The young/ inexperienced players we expect to tire in tough games, but there is a lot of hope with Tauru, Hastie, Garcia, Boxsall.. NWM..who knows if he will be with us, and a few others who should go on and just get better.

We can't afford to go backwards again next season- we couldn't this season, and tough decisions will need to be made on and off the field.
This.
We are in a dip. ‘23, we win this game. Even ‘24. ‘25 and the older ones are weaker and the younger ones aren’t strong enough (yet).

Hills gotta go. Hes been my whipping boy for years (even before he came to us) but hes just deplorable defensively and Ross whole game is based off solid defensive work, added to the "play the kids" stuff he just has no place in this team anymore.

Carlton is still hamstrung by these exact types of over the top contracts when they were shit. It's limited their improvement when they need a few tailored appointments. Even if TDK his on $800k in his final year, it's a lot unless he's turned into an absolute elite ruck. Max King is going to still be sucking out his million a year. If both are injury prone or don't hit top level it looks horrible.

Even the Dogs haven't hurt themselves because they can replace players but spending too much on GOPs lost them a few absolute stars.
I think there no perfect solution. I berything on this is an educated risk. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. We get 4/5 good years from him that’s perfect.
Good luck to him. Where else are you going to spend the dollars? You split that amount between three other players - cost draft picks and takes up list spots we need to get young kids again.

We can go round and round in this - there’s no perfect solution.
No guts, no glory OR slowly slowly and take longer on the rebuild that still might not work.

I’m taking the no draft pick option of tdk and trusting Dalrymple to pick up another 3? Very good players.

This is right
Into 50 efficiency stats tell you today - and in other games - we struggle here
Yes we’ve missed King etc but our decision making and connection into fwd 50 is poor
Guys like Butler and Wood or Hill ….if they have it going in just wait for the butchery….
Hall epitomises the smarts you need
It’s why I’m keen to see Nas the mid on a more permanent basis …

The stat actually tells your for the season we're pretty decent in comparison to our ladder position.

We were 7th for i50 conversions to goals and 10th for total points per game prior to this round starting.

Overall defence and getting it inside 50 enough have been more of an issue

With Collard looking a little lacklustre yesterday and Butler going down, might we see a Patrick Said debut this week?

Edit, seems Collard may have hurt is arm/hand?
