We need a healthy list back so this VFL side can start getting some help with the likes of Lloyd, Florent, Hayward etc. in it. (Not saying these players specifically, but just using them as examples of best 22 players who have had poor starts to the year and theoretically could be dropped.) I think the coaches hands have been tied this year because they've had a tonne of senior players underperforming but literally SFA to replace them with.

That our best players in the VFL this year have been a ruckman in Ladhams and a non-listed player in Shipley, is a problem. (We only got to see one of Cleary's games, so don't really know how he performed. His one game that we saw was great.)

But I guess this bodes the question - WTAF are the rest doing? Are they aware they're playing for their careers? Does Indhi Kirk think being a club legend's son is gonna save him from being delisted when he's barely being sighted in games, only to often stuff up when he does touch it? Does Angus Sheldrick realise he is out of contract this year and is currently showing next to nothing that would make the club want to retain him? Does Jack Buller know that as a key forward, he has the lowest of bars to pass to have a moderate impact - use his body, make contests - and he still barely manages to do so? Does Caleb Mitchell want to show anything at all to impress?

Frustrating as hell.
Will Hayward is averaging more goals per game than any other season he has played

We have a lot of 20-23 year olds that have been at the club for 3-4 years and not developed. Would love to have a senior player like Florent/Lloyd being able to deliver to Buller to see how he would go because he does do well when it gets kicked in his vicinity

I actually think it’s difficult for players to shine at VFL when we are currently propping up the team with suburban footballers.

We’re just outclassed here.

Especially players relying on the midfield that has 2 out of like 5 AFL listed players in it and one of them butchers the ball

What position does Caleb Mitchell truly play?

Because 17 touches at 65% is nothing special as a roaming half back/on baller

Shipley & Edwards look more effective mids than Sheldrick.

Geddes gives greater efforts than Mitchell.

Tidemann & Kluske are arguably more damaging than Kirk.

Hanrahan's used the ball better out of defence than Will Edwards.

Who's propping up who?

This is just one game your looking at and its been Edwards worst game by foot for like a year tbh

I mean, I don't think kicking's been his strong suit across his (admittedly injury-interrupted) career so far. I think I commented in the pre-season that the hope for him was that he'd continue the tradition of great Swans defenders that can't hit the side of a barn, after Grundy, McCartin. At this stage it's no guarantee he'll even be on the list to carry out that tradition!

But it's also not just one game that I'm basing this on. Last week we had one of our better wins since joining the VFL and three of our top four vote-getters in the coaches votes were non-listed players.

I think if the chasm between our listed & non-listed players was greater, then our performances as a team would actually be better. It's because there basically is no chasm between the listed & non-listed players that we get the performances we get.

I don’t agree at all on this one caesar88

Sheldrick was the leading possession getter on the ground & without him (and Shipley) we’d have been absolutely destroyed.

He was clearly our best.

Ben Edwards is a quality VFL player, so he’s not one of the suburban footballers I was referring to.

But we had a pile of top-ups, whereas Gold Coast have virtually no injuries & their list was full of AFL quality types.

I actually thought our effort today (beyond the first 10 minutes) was OK.

If anything, Will Green is the one that worries me a bit. I really was hoping to see some signs of a quality player starting to emerge. Just haven’t seen it yet. 4 disposals and no impact - it ain’t great.

And Will Edwards had a bit of a stinker. Throwing him in the ruck seemed a bit of an act of desperation.

You keep going on about listed players and non listed players but have you realised that we have only 1 listed on baller fit and then some low possession half backs alongside key position players. The players that get the ball are the midfielders and they usually are the ones that get voted BOG because they pass the stats test.

Snell and Leidler were probably Sydney's best today and they had like 13 touches each.

Think when we get some players back it will change especially a fit midfielder or two

I'm aware that there is a personnel shortage, that was the point I was making in needing more players back and injecting more quality into the side.

But the senior players that are out there and not injured should be showing more than the guys who are state league stalwarts like Geddes, Edwards, Shipley etc.

And I just don't think they do. If you showed this team to a newbie and said some are good enough for AFL contracts and some aren't, I don't think the newbie would even be able to pick who is who.

I think your still massively overstating, disposals = impact. Your also looking at the two VFL players that are what the VFL captain and co captain. Shipley and Edwards are pretty unlucky to not be one of the last couple on the list at an AFL side, pretty much meaning they are the same quality of Sheldrick Paton and Francis which they are when those guys play in the VFL.

Because of injury I think its your inability to shift expectation of the top line VFL contracted players being top line players in our VFL squad due to injuries rather than mid of the pack players if we had a semi healthy list.

Like if Sydney were fit the top players in the VFL week in week out would be Ladhams Francis Cleary Corey Warner Paton etc but all of them are playing AFL

In the unlikely event that we had all 44 players fit and available. This would probably be my hypothetical full strength reserves side (using listed players only).

B: Paton Hamling Snell
HB Fox Francis Cunningham
C: Mitchell Cleary Warner
HF:Bowman Buller Kirk
F: Dattoli Ladhams Hanily
Fol: Green Sheldrick Adams

bench: Edwards Andrew Leidler

I missed the game and can't bring myself to watch it now. Watched the 15 minute highlights and checked out the stats. Looks like Snell, Leidler & Hamling among our best. Very pleased to see Leidler do something. Would like to see their highlights because they didn't really feature in the highlight package (as may be expected for defenders' best moments) but not prepared to watch the whole game.

Bowman's goal seems to be his best bit of a play in a quiet start to his career so far. He had one other good goal, perhaps in our second game of the season but has mostly been pretty inconspicuous.

The actual final result seems reasonable given the mismatch in the players. The same can't be said for the seniors.

Yep pretty much thought Sheldrick was good other than 1-2 absolute shockers but like some others have posted the VFL is basically down about 11-12 guys from the usual rotation and thats half the bloody side. Would be lucky to compete with any clubs let alone GCS who have 100 gamers in the VFL

Don’t know who the commentators were today, but they had Sheldrick in the best 3 on the ground (with Fiorini and Davies).

I think people are underestimating how good he was today - he’ll likely rate well in the coaches votes despite the belting.

Yes, I know, I’m a shameless Sheldrick fan - but SOME team changes absolutely must be made after that debacle today & Gus was clearly our best in the 2’s.

He deserves a chance …. and not as the sub.

Thats probably the problem is that we only have Snell Sheldrick and Hamling that I could conceivably see coming back into the 1s side after this weekend.

Bet we see only 1 of them tho unless Cox makes a proper stand

VFL ROUND 5 REVIEW

LAST week Brayden Fiorini piled up 47 disposals but Gold Coast still lost by 54 points to Southport.

This week, he made that performance look second rate with a powerhouse masterclass in the middle of People First Stadium as he put an inexperienced Sydney to the sword in securing a 47-point win for the Suns.

Fiorini only had 13 touches by half-time but had already kicked three goals to separate the contest, and he only got better after the break to finish with 34 possessions, five marks, eight tackles, six inside-50s and five goals.

David Swallow made an assured return from a knee injury, playing a full game and gathering 29 touches (13 contested) and six clearances and Sam Clohesy dominated his wing with 28 disposals, seven marks and a goal.

But despite a four-goal-to-none first quarter and threatening to blow the game apart, the vastly more experienced Suns could never fully shrug off the dogged Swans, who regularly shut off their bursts from defence and showed they too could move the ball quickly.

Fielding only four players with AFL experience, Sydney won the second quarter and twice stopped the home team’s momentum through a terrific display at the coalface from Angus Sheldrick that was well supported by Ben Edwards and Nick Shipley (11 tackles).

Will Edwards and Patrick Snell starred down back to tame Elliott Himmelberg and Ned Moyle, Caleb Mitchell looked good in a new role off half-back, Ned Bowman and Indhi Kirk impressed with their workrate and Jack Buller provided a strong target but let himself down by kicking 1.3.
