List Mgmt. 2025 Trade/FA Thread (Cont’d)

Yes, this is what I called going backwards. If Mihocek stayed we could still have brought Buller in, rotate our bigs and play those that are in form. Instead we are reliant on young players being able to step up and McStay returning to form/fitness.

The definition off a failed trade period or "going backwards" is that you lose more than you bring in. If we don't pull of a trade we are objectively doing that.
I’ve never understood the need to separate and rate each section of list management when the goals are not known. My goal would be improving the list by covering a mid and a forward. But salary cap and list spaces may not support that given options available.

Or we have provided the opportunity for younger players, which majority seem to be in favour of.
It doesn't change the facts. We lost a quality player and did not bring one in.

Given our attempts, we seem to have the cap space to add a player. If we don't then it's a failed trade period. Whether that was avoidable or just how things are is another question.

I'm not really making any subjective analysis here.

Very bullish West will take Mihocheks position next year. However, at worst its 2 of Buller, McStay, Membrey and Cox.

I am ok with keeping our powder dry unless a potential A-grader comes up. Means we wil have a full suite of draft picks for 2026, 2027 and 2028, and $2m-$3m in the cap, allowing us to potentially bring in 1 or 2 A-graders next year.

Next years improvement needs to come from:

  • Senior players who had down/interupted years in 2025 (De Goey, McCreery, Houston, Hill. McStay)
  • Young players who need to step up (West, Parker, Steele, Allan, De Mattea, Cochrane, Hayes, Ryan Harrison ect).

The more you think about it, supring we had such a good year with so many key players being down.

I've not judged the efforts of the club, just made the statement we are losing more than we brought in if Buller is the only deal we make. The definition of a failed trade period when not in rebuild or salary cutting mode.

The club clearly wants to do more and is trying to.

Never forget Tom and his group text messages.

I haven’t forgotten. Yet another one in the AFL landscape who has not only survived that, but seemingly thrived, with a bigger and better job. Irksome doesn’t come close.

How fecking simple minded do you have to be to think that a pick which will likely sit at around 19-20 in a weak draft is an “excellent offer” for a contracted match winner which the club has shown absolutely no indication they’d even be willing to trade to this point?

Feel a bit sorry for West with fan's expectations. Really good first VFL season and got a crack with 4 possessions against a bottom 8 team. Going from this to replacing 20+ games is a very tough ask for a young key forward. He didnt even make it through the whole season with the physical toll getting to him. Will be a slower burn until he gets hardened enough to put up with what undersized key forwards cop in the seniors.

This trade period is going to be a fail if we don't trade a first round pick (or at least 2nd round).

We've lost a best 23 player for nothing. We have the cap space to fit a good player in, so we need to find one if we want to avoid going backwards.

Losing and not replacing a quality player when you have the cap space is not how you approach contending. This is far more important than holding onto future picks for nebulous reasons.

Failing a trade period is ok, you can't always find what you need, but it will make contention in 2026 more difficult.

And what are they proposing we do with this pick? Give it to Norf for Simpkin?

Eff off 😆

JDG for Bailey Humphrey could be interesting.

It's no different to the same expectations placed on Reef to be our long-term Murphy replacement, or Fin Macrae to be our full-time midfield bull. Some fans have a lot to answer for.

As if there seriously hasn’t been any movement today.

It’s clear they’re dragging every deal until the last hour of the trade period.
Same shit every year.

They'll get some deals done tomorrow afternoon and then drag it out until 7.27pm on Wednesday night.

To be fair to West, that forward line was a disaster. Mihocek, McStay, Membrey, West, Elliott and WHE. 6 players who play tall. Some of the worst spacing I've ever seen.

Plantar fasciitis can happen to anyone, I've had it.
I don't think Charlie's was necessarily due to physical toll.

I love Will Ferrell movies. Our 13 year old granddaughter from Sydney recently stayed with us, and I made her watch a couple of Will Ferrell movies after dinner. She looked bewildered.

Kids. Where’s their sense of humour? Probably lost it in one of her devices.
