But in seriousness I agree - why we never give these guys a bit of time around the ball to just whet their appetie

Actually the thinking of "give him a run on the ball" is pretty simplistic, and its largely the reason why it isnt done.

I also was surprised by Welshs speed and attack on the ball, I would give him the occasional centre rover roll, it is only SANFL after all, whats to lose?

In saying that, what's really gain from it? If you don't think Welsh is a center mid, or have no plans to use him as one in the bigs, it does take away from time that he could be working on other things.

I'd argue the point of the SANFL is to make the transition between SANFL-AFL as smooth as possible when injuries strike instead of more developmental reasons. For most of development, teams are just waiting for the off-season for when you can hit the gym, and the training track harder.

They gave him stints up the ground last year, prolly wing but given the vision you get at most sanfl games it's hard to tell.

Tall forward in second season after drafting better than in first year. We shouldn't be shocked. Kid is still only 19.
Glad he's looking fitter and getting involved.

I agree his efforts are first class this year and he seems to hit the ball at full pace, his improvement this year is very promising.

Welsh has been setback by injuries in his first couple of seasons..

Kid has some serious talent and was at stages touted as a possible no.1 draft pick in his draft year..

Hopefully he gets a good run at it. Lad has speed to burn, he’s seriously quick for his size, and has good skills. Could be anything.. big bodied mid/medium forward potential if he puts his mind to it and his body doesnt let him down.

Slow burn and should be given a few years on the list.

If we can keep spuds like mchenry, murphy, jones, davis, mackay and few others on the list for long periods.. then surely we can afford this kid some time to show his wares..
