Sam Toner is the best small/medium forward available in the MSD I think but given the success of Shaun Mannagh he'll likely have suitors before our pick. Same age as Max Beattie at 22.

Mind you I'd pass on picking on this MSD, maybe former GWS medium rebounding defender bazooka booted Josh Fahey now out at Elizabeth might be worth a look.

As a supporter (I don’t support Sturt) of the club, I totally accept and agree but I wonder what his opinion would be?

Does he want an AFL challenge
He'd jump at it

Was a draft hopeful but overlooked and then immediately did his ACL so a pretty brutal few months. Hasn't put a foot wrong since and has become a dominant SANFL player. I think he's more a James Battersby level player - excellent SANFL player but not quite the speed / size to translate to AFL. But the club certainly wouldn't begrudge him the chance

You'd think Fahey would get a look somewhere, perhaps being in a woeful side people just arent taking notice.

Attitude and character issues that date back to juniors. He’s AFL standard from a talent perspective.

A couple of years ago he was all lined up top do preseason with Fremantle. They were apparently pretty keen. For some reason it fell through and he's not been looked at since. I suspect that was his last chance.

A shame because he's a great leader and a brilliant person.

I still dont think hes quite got an AFL game style, but hes improved his fitness and skills a lot in the last few years.

Sam Jacobs will be pissed right off, loses 3 of his best players in the MSD and I doubt Nathan Bassett will be doing cartwheels too losing his Ruckman

6 players taken and twomey saying clubs should be thrilled their players are getting taken. yeah, im sure they are.
Like most Victorian media people, Twomey has zero clue about the world outside of Victoria.

Their U18's and VFL (AFL reserves) is basically all designed to provide for the AFL. That's it. That's the sole purpose. So if a player gets drafted, they have done their job and should celebrate.

The SANFL and WAFL clubs are there as their own entities, with their own proud histories. They are there to win premierships. When they lose players midseason, it harms their chances of success, so not a reason to celebrate.

He doesn't get that.

Absolute rubbish from the SANFL clubs imho

If you don't want players taken midseason then don't put AFL hopefuls on your list. Stick with guys whose ceiling is state league or who are happy just playing state league.

If you do list AFL hopefuls because they're good players, then this comes with the territory.

Guaranteed the Eagles will be using their track record for getting guys into AFL level as a selling point to their next batch of recruits, or locals overlooked in the 2026 national draft. As they should.

It’s just a real shame they’ve lost 3 players, who are they playing this week?

What a load of nonsense. If any SANFL club did as you suggest they’d have next to no young players on their list. There’s probably a dozen players in every club that have played senior footy who still have AFL aspirations and are unlikely to get drafted, someone like Tom Lewis is a glaring example, so what, cut him loose because of maybe, ifs and buts?
The issue is the timing of the MSD and total lack of adequate compensation.
