Maybe a controversial opinion, but if we were to lose Amartey and were able to get another quality midfielder I’d be very open to that idea.

The idea of Amartey to Essendon and Merrett to Sydney was floated last night on Ch 7, and while that’s extremely optimistic on our end, something along those lines would be very intriguing to me.

Not quite sure who that midfielder is, but I’d be pretty wary of giving Amartey a big deal at decent coin (anything north of 800k average per annum). I’d prefer we rolled into next year with Charlie, Logan & McLean as the three talls, and used the freed up funds to chase another difference maker in the middle.

I’m not suggesting we should be trying to get a player the calibre of Merrett, but assuming we’d get some compensation for Amartey leaving, I’d use that as a chip to try and trade for a midfielder who would cost around the same as what we are proposing to pay Amartey.

It may be there’s no one in that bracket, but worth exploring imo. I’m sure we could tempt someone who’s contracted at a lesser team who’d enjoy the chance to play for a contender.

I love Merrett the player but on what planet is he the right one? We have Gulden back in soon. I’d say a mid is the last type we’d target. Sure if Bont wants to come be my guest but I hardly think we’d even go for mids.

Essendon are only trading Merrett for assets not players ie 2027 draft picks especially (Bewick father son who is a top 5 talent)

Amartey kicks goals and wants to stay here long term. His body has started to be consistent and he still has natural improvement.

Hypothetically, happy to meet in the middle on the prices thrown around and if we don't I think it's a mistake. He can kick 50+ a year

He gets good info , but not sure about , a fair bit going on behind the scenes

I read the story about Mitch Mellis and it makes his performances for us even more amazing. He effectively doesn't train with the team and didn't even know the game plan prior to debuting yet has been amongst our best every week including a 10 coaches votes game last week. He is essentially winging it! An interesting comment made i think by one of his coaches was that (to paraphrase) "he rises to the level he is confronted with". He reminds me of Paul Chapman

That comment by a coach stands out and at that level he is heavily tagged , it is another great read by Paul Amy

No reason not to open a spot up if he's willing to sign just for the rest of the year to prove himself.

If we overpay for Amartey I'll be pissed. Just pay him what he's worth. If other clubs want to give him a million let him walk like Buller. We have an ample replacement for him in McLean.

Amartey's body fails him. He's usually inaccurate. And he can't clunk an overhead mark. He just isn't worth it.

it would seem Amarty wants long term security more than a big pay day from us, but money talks. Carlton come knocking with 1.2m for 3-5 years, he should go, not coz I want to see him go, but that's life changing money.

It's probably our weakest depth area tbh.

We would go from having 1 depth player i.e. McLean to having no depth. Because Hetherton, King, McCartney are almost guaranteed not to be ready for senior footy in 2027. Of course, there is a possibility McLean goes looking for opportunity anyway.

Cox sounding pretty certain that there is no list spot available to pick up a player in the mid season draft. Things can change, so we shall see soon enough.
