I’ve always wanted a player called Arki at Port. Would be a top 5 lock.

Last weekends game for Sandi.

Midfielder/Forward | 182cm | 23/04/2008

Stats:
26 disposals, 5 clearances, 4 goals

Butler took out our Player of the Week nod after a high-impact performance. He started on-ball and having made stoppage work an area for growth over the off-season, won 17 contested possessions and five clearances. He also turned it on when resting forward, booting four goals including a purple patch of three in four minutes during the opening term. Butler proved his ability to break games open in that surge, looking to do damage and create with every possession. His goal sense, one-on-one prowess and crumbing nous were all at elite levels to start the season.

Uwland, Burton, Hollands, Max King,

Just some players that were highly touted and were out for a lot of their senior draft year.

The classics are Judd and Selwood, who slide due their concerns on their shoulders and knees respectively.

I think Dougie will still attract a bid early regardless of fitness. The thing that may caution clubs is the go home element.

To some extent, it’s the same to Salopek, Rodan, Burgoyne and Pilot - who have all signalled they want to be at port.

The go home factor the NGA issue.

The players that perform on the Championships.

The time out.

The refusal to have serious discussions with other clubs.

We can stop worrying about bids on Dougie unless he play a reasonable chunk of SANFL.

It would be in his best interest long term for a carefully managed conditioning program.

He’s no longer a complicated get and likely our 2nd pick.

He’ll still get bid on top 5 at an absolute best case for us I assume. Too talented to drop below that, clubs would have been tracking him for years prior to him being in our NGA. Unless a whole heap of kids have phenomenal years and jump up in how clubs rate them.

Every extra pick he slides from 1 or 2 is super beneficial for us.

Can’t see anyone bidding on Walker or Cochrane at 1 - particularly if it’s Essendon. Just don’t think the image of their first high pick for a long while being used as a bid. Tigers probably still finish bottom or second bottom.

So could see something like:

Dons take pick one. Tigers bid on Walker at 2 and then take pick three, don’t think they would bid twice in a row. West Coast I reckon finishes third bottom and could bid on Dougie at pick 4. Otherwise he definitely gets a bid from Melbourne or North if they finish below us. If we finish below Melbourne and North, we may have a situation where we hold pick five and there hasn’t been a bid on him yet.

If they bring in the end of 1st round compo for the top 5 picks, then you would definitely make a bid at pick 1. Not sure if it is confirmed or not yet though.

Max King was a recent one that looked a probable pick 1 in underage year and then did his knee in draft year.

Only slid to pick 4, but perhaps would act as a warning for what can happen when spending high picks on injured juniors.

Ah yes. Still, pretty sure he was fit the year before.

Still haven’t heard of a player missing the better part of 2 predraft seasons and still going top 3 or so like Dougie is talked up.

You'd be stupid not to, you get an end of first round draft pick for free, it's a big advantage.
It’s why I wonder if clubs will get strategic and not place bids to ensure that club that naturally has a top 5 pick does not get an extra pick.

Bottom five club putting bids is another story though.

Aside from getting Dougie Cochrane, I think we should also be drafting another key defender, a ruck, a small forward and mid in order of needs and best available talent in the next few drafts.

FF: Georgiades
CHF: Whitlock
C: JHF
CHB:
FB: Ramm
Ruck:

Assuming that Georgiades stays put for another 12 months, Whitlock and Ramm on both ends, JHF as the main man in the middle, we should be looking to create a spine and then find pieces to build around them. Let Dougie develop as the third tall until he is ready to become the no.1 or no.2 forward.
