Preview 2026 MSD Draft Prospects

Sam Toner produced the best performance of his career at this level at the perfect time ahead of the upcoming mid season draft that takes place in a few days time. Toner is a raw athletic prospect who motored up and down his wing in this game, finding plenty of the footy and hitting the scoreboard. While he has some rough edges that need to be smoothed off with further development (as seen with some of his decision making and skill execution in this game) he seems like the kind of prospect the rookie list was made for, one that could pay off for a club willing to take a chance on his upside.

Got some wheels with that height.

After being overlooked at last year's national draft Xavier Bamert could realise his AFL dream in the coming days at the mid season draft. Bamert is a versatile type who works super hard out on the field and plays with toughness and physicality. He's a nice size for a mid/flanker and strong overhead, which should allow him to be a bit of a swiss army knife type role player at the next level.

Thanks mate, love your work.

On top of what has been previously mentioned, he is able to break the tackles of grown men at age 19, which is ridiculous. Not the quickest, but he doesn't look slow and his athleticism and power more than makes up for his weaknesses.

Still plugging away mate. Can only hope.

Take this as constrictive criticism but having arms that are skinnier than Bailey Scott’s isn’t going to hold you in good stead.

I’d suggest reaching out to Dank for some roids and peptides.

Seemingly a certainty we take Bamert, if he falls to us?

He was close in the pre season, so it’d surprise me if we overlooked him. Not in a position of need but from what I’ve heard most clubs see him developing into a centre square mid in the near term. So that’d be beneficial for us as we don’t have much mid depth.

Louie Montgomery had another big day for GWS with a win over Brisbane in the VFL. Played half back and wing 27 disposals at 85% DE, 5 marks and two tackles.

rf, is Joel Fitzgerald still playing as a back flanker for Willi?

His stats this season are off the charts. Surely he gets picked up.

His last 6 weeks:

39 disposals, 9 tackles, 0 goals & 4 behinds
37 disposals, 5 tackles
40 disposals, 8 tackles, 2 goals, 1 behind
26 disposals, 8 tackles
35 disposals
35 disposals

That suggests he is way too good for the VFL... And those tackle numbers suggest he has improved his contested & defensive work, which were seen as his main improvement areas in his draft year.

Out of curiosity, why was he not FS to Poorta?

Thing is...the MSD is such a crapshoot, especially outside of the first few picks, surely when a team's in our position - with few injuries and a decent positional spread of developing players - they're better off just getting the best available option? And particularly when its a player already known comprehensively by the club, like Bamert?

Its not like there's a best 23 KPD among the leading candidates who's ready to usurp Pink and Corr after the bye.

We got one bookend out of the MSD though so..

Has improved his competitiveness and physicality significantly since his junior days. Far more accountable and well rounded.

Still a bit one paced but a club like WC could do with a player of his professionalism and work ethic.

Playing as a genuine mid now too, having no worries doing the work defensively as well as around the contest.

Out of curiosity, why was he not FS to Poorta?

Injury interrupted junior years he just couldn’t get continuity.

Mick Ablett on SEN WA said his mail has Bombers taking Bamert. But this was before they secured the no.1 spot.
When queried about key defenders he mentioned a 200cm Kye Annand playing for Geelong vfl. Any one know much about him?
