Byrne should not be blamed for that. This is leadership, this is mental strength, this is players who don't or can't run and this is game plan.

Collingwood aren't good but they have a system that supports players, hides flaws and is more than the sum of its parts. We are the exact opposite.some
Plus we need
Sorry to say his brother not much better. Poor disposal yet again
Plus Ollie couldn't tackle a broomstick...

Fair but I’m very angry with club. I have written to them. What has happened is Wrong and that is not an assumption

Seen this way too many times and what happened was almost inevitable and that is played out in public in a big game is so wrong. Feel for this kid

Ps “Rubbish” is a bit harsh
I agree Soap and I am angry also, so apologies for the emotive language.

I can't get my head around how a player in his condition was allowed to take to the field. Even if EH was unaware of his state and perhaps somewhat good at hiding it during the pregame, how on Earth did the coaches not see there was a serious problem with him after having zero stats in the first half? Did anyone speak to him at half time?

I'm trying to look at this positively, as a potential turning point or penny drop moment for EH and the club. However, it is very, very bad and dangerous that he was out on the field. He or other players could have been severely injured, and now he has been publicly embarassed in front of 80k, filmed by onlookers and the media are having a field day. Not a good situation for a young man, trying to forge his career and learning how to cope with a mental illness which he spoke about publicly last year. The media are even saying it was known, before the game, he struggled to get any sleep the night before. Good sleep is one of the most critical things for people with mental illness. The club doctors would be aware of this.

Honestly, this whole situation makes me wonder if the coaching staff have completely checked out.

I feel for Elijah but i still think WTF is our club doing signing this guy. Fool me once...

Our club is a total shambles.

We may as well bring back dick pick guy as well.
Unfortunately we are an amateur club in a Professional sporting competition.

Hate is a bit extreme

Way I see it, it’s mainly our midfielders that can’t compete or keep up with oppo mids.

Cripps is an extraction beast but it seems he just can’t get the ball out in time these days…oppo mids pounce on him and he may have lost a little of his reflex/power…

Walsh and Cerra are similar in that when Cripps dominates they go well or ok…

Walsh in particular plays out of his skin but still struggles to get separation.

Both lack a bit of burst/power …and are easily stopped/tackled.

Cerra is supposed to be a very good kick but…how many nice kicks do we see from him these days?

We are way too dependent on Cripps beast mode to win games.
Yep. 5 years on and essentially nothing has changed ie. we only look good when Cripps is absolutely dominating.

Absolute indictment on coaching and our other mids.

There are a range of possible health conditions which could be behind Elijah's behaviour, so I don't want to jump to conclusions.
Yeah .. I just hope the poor fella can get his life sorted out.

I feel for those who drop out of AFL and then have to deal with their decisions later in life.
The regret of blowing such a great opportunity would be a Demon I wouldn't like residing in my head for the rest of my life.

It would be interesting to watch interviews with past AFL Players who couldn't cope at the time for various reasons and dropped out. What do they think about their behaviour, decisions .. and the. consequences..?

In Elijah's case .. being given more chances and extended support by the Club .. would make it even more difficult to deal with down the track... should his footy career go off the rails..?

ps I get that AFL footy doesn't suit everyone ... and that's ok.

We all know what it looks like and it does not look like only mental health.

I hate to say it but I think we will be trying to cover that up and so will the AFL as it has negative implications for both.

I was coaching country footy some years back, had a bloke who turned up eratic. You knew something was up. The guy just went out there to fight. Very scattered. Thinking back it was lucky he left the field when he was asked. It wasn't good and it was a learning curve for me. Long story short, the player was on ice and this reminded me of that.

Ice is a bane on society and people on this kind of substance while playing footy has snuck into country footy and I am sure elsewhere. It's mind destroying poison.

I am firmly in the camp of what I was witnessing was substance related as I have seen this on the football field before. IMO Carlton and the AFL will be in damage control.

We knew he was high risk and I suspect we knew this could happen so we haven't been caught by surprise.

I'm not sure where this one ends up. It's a sham

I think this is where it is, seen this myself also in Amateur leagues. There will be a massive coverup by Carlton/AFL, already started last night after the game. Will fit nicely under the Mental Health umbrella and everyone will move on.

Honestly, this whole situation makes me wonder if the coaching staff have completely checked out.

Or simple not up to it?

There is so much to play out yet and I am positive we haven't been told the whole story.

My issue is it should NEVER have happened. It's a massive Failure from the club

Hey Soapy, I love your posts on here, so please don't take this the wrong way. But I'm calling out this particular post as utter rubbish and I strongly encourage all posters on here to refrain from making assumptions and spreading inuendo about Elijah.

I'm not having a go at you personally, I'm just saying the opinion of your mental health person is BS mate.

I have worked in the mental health field. I have spent time in acute psychiatric wards. I have spoken to a lot of psych nurses and psychiatrists over the years. I have met a large number of people who suffer from a range of conditions and I have heard their stories.

There are a number of possible explanations for Elijah's behaviour on Thursday night. A mental health condition is definitely plausable and in fact, highly likely. Until proven otherwise, I'm backing in the club. Hopefully this is a 'penny drop' moment for Elijah's doctors, the coaches, the players and Elijah himself.

There are a range of possible health conditions which could be behind Elijah's behaviour, so I don't want to jump to conclusions. But for those people who think his behaviour could only be caused by substance abuse, I encourage you to keep an open mind. Bipolar disorder is just one example. A lot of successful people suffer from this, including some elite athletes. Michael Slater has talked publicly about his battles with it to try and raise awareness. He was about to go on air as a commentator in the Sydney Olympics and didn't turn up. He was found running around frantically, covered in sweat, dancing up and down a train station telling people he was Jesus. This is what an acute manic episode can look like. What I saw from the footage of EH, could easily be explained by BPD. But it could also be a range of other things, so I am just raising BPD as an example to make my point. Unfortunately Slater's story took a dark turn in more recent years. Every case is different and some are very complicated. But with the right treatment, and good support, most people with BPD and other mental health conditions can live a good life and function at a high level.

I sincerely hope this event is a positive turning point for Elijah, leading to a better understanding of his condition so he can get the treatment he needs and learn how to live with it. There is a genuine possibility he could emerge from this better than ever, from both a football and non-football point of view. So let's keep an open mind and think positively.
That’s a magnificent post and you deserve a medal. Thank you.

Like a moth to a flame I’ve been reading everything about this, it’s a curious situation that I don’t feel comfortable reading any more about.

Hope EH gets the help he needs.

Hope this incident helps the club get better with dealing with these situations moving forward.

Hope the rest of the team, who felt of knew something wasn’t right, have the courage and or intelligence to speak up next time.

Hope an investigation is taken to identify where the failure points were.

Hope this leads to better outcomes for player welfare and mental health programs moving forward.

Hope the Hollands family take a break off social media.

Hope that this is our lowest and from here we galvanise and become stronger.

Hope all of you that read this are okay, that your mates and loved ones are also. Use this as a prompt to call someone and just say hi, they may need it more than you know.

Be kind to yourselves and keep barracking hard for the blues.

Don’t give up on hope.

There are several professions where the capacity to perform is contingent on consistent psychological stability, particularly when "mental episodes" are involved.

In roles that require peak performance under intense pressure, such as professional athletics, the occurrence of such episodes raises serious questions about whether an individual can realistically meet the demands of the job.

If a person is susceptible to these incidents, it may serve as a fundamental disqualifier from continuing a career at that elite professional level.

Considering the combination of past history, recent form, and the gravity of the current situation, it is difficult to see a path back for Elijah.
Good call, so sad. Reminds me of Sally Robbins, women's rower in 2004 Olympics, she stopped with 500m to go due to panic !and exhaustion). A lack of trust of her by teammates was raised in the lead up and was not acted on by coaches. And then sadly plays out on the highest stage. Personally I've had a panic attack before and you think you're going to die. Then add 80,000 sets of eyes on you. Just awful.

Our club is toxic. Our culture is a losing one. What happened last night with Hollands says it all.

I want people to hold us accountable and get rid of the crap within our four walls because enough is enough.

I'm not the only one.

Our coach makes very few senior/established players accountable by dropping them. There's one simple thing that can change to improve standards
And many people get seduced by the, "they're not ready yet" when the discussion of giving some kids a bit of exposure

What and who are they saying on social media ?

Of all the things i’ve been furious about this club in the past 20 years (there’s been plenty) this one is right at the top of the pile.

If you have an employee at work with a known history of mental health issues, you always keep a closer eye on them … we have a goddamn doctor on the bench and a dozen or so coaches and fitness staff at the game who have very close contact with the players. He has 22 teammates out there, including his brother.

Totally baffling.

Can guarantee the AFL is not going to stop at today’s statement by the club.
Hope lij is ok but it’s very hard to deal with even if you do know… we had a guy at our work with mental health issues and came in one day and thought he was working at nasa and we pulled him aside and called the Cat team but we knew … have also had a friend which we didn’t know and took us a while to figure it out … wasn’t a quick fix .. for all Carlton knew lij was a coke and drunk so they had no clue of the the mental health issues going on .. dude rocks up to play and Carlton for all their knowledge dealt with it the best they could…it’s the first time it’s happened , remember that … dealing with someone going through an episode is probably the hardest thing to deal with !!! I have been there.. everyone needs to chill
