Compo picks should be scrapped. The fact that supporters are asking whether its better to lose a player because of draft compensation says everything that's wrong with it. It is a stupid system where the AFL hands out consolation prizes to clubs that couldn't or wouldn't retain players. It creates this weird loser mentality where fans start viewing player departures as an asset rather than list management failures.

Good list management should be about recruiting, developing and retaining talent. Not gaming a compensation formula.

I'd rather keep him.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. If we have to overpay to keep him and the alternative is a first round pick then letting him walk is the better move.

Can't see us getting band 1 for Sparrow given he's apparently unrestricted.

Also would be disappointed if he left given his age as it further guts our peak age demographic which is already lacking.

I really don't think we'd get band 1.

Silvagni got the Blues an end of first rounder (band 1.5) and he was rumoured to be on 900k a year. Worpel got the Hawks end of second round (band 2) and he was rumoured to have been on 600k.

Given Sparrow is unrestricted, we have no power in terms of upping the offers. If he goes for 750k I'm not sure that's enough to trigger band 1. Best we could hope for would be 1.5 but his contract would be a way off Silvagni's IMO.

Would be pretty s* if Sparrow decided to leave just as he started to play some decent footy after years of mediocrity. We don't have a lot of quality around his age bracket either. But hey, 8 weeks ago I would have taken a packet of chips for him so what ever. Highly doubt we get band 1 for him but maybe Crows have some $$ to throw around?

Surely if Sparrow goes, it’s for cash. Adelaide would need to put up a big offer to grab him. It is the one time in his career to cash in, we also supposedly have an sizeable deal in front as it is. Also difference between band 1 and band 2 will be **** all after we won the flag.

That said if we finish bottom 5 it might be

• Dees: pick 5
• Sparrow compoick 6
• GC: Pick 13
• End of first round (for being bottom 5 and academy player coming in): Pick 23
• Pick for trading Windsor: Pick 50

No idea how they can fit Dawson, Walker, Rankine, Rachelle, Tilthorpe, Curtin, Peatling, Cumming, Laird, Milera, Worrell, Ah Chee and 10m on Bailey and still have much cash left for Sparrow if they go down that route.

Half those guys aren't on a big money and Walkers gonna retire. Sparrow would be on good money but hardly money that destroys a salary cap
