Not us, but Richmond are offering $18m for 8 years for Butters.

Works out to $2.25m per annum

Madness.
These sorts of deals only really make sense for a team like Richmond.

Not really they could probably half of it in two years. Have you seen their list? No idea how they even cover the salary cap

Speaking of that clubs should be allowed to sell off cap space. It's ridiculous that Richmond can't sell off say 500 to a million of cap space for a first rounder. Instead of being able to be proactive they have to pay some average campaigner like hopper a million just to cover it

Would be pretty s* if Sparrow decided to leave just as he started to play some decent footy after years of mediocrity. We don't have a lot of quality around his age bracket either. But hey, 8 weeks ago I would have taken a packet of chips for him so what ever. Highly doubt we get band 1 for him but maybe Crows have some $$ to throw around?
so you think it's just a coincidence that he started producing the first season in his career that he got midfield opportunity? wow. an amazing coincidence.

Once again, leave the trade value up to me and Lamby.

Fitzy could probably come in and have the same impact for less than half the price.

I agree, would make total sense to allow clubs to trade salary cap space

Literally my previous post said he was playing decent footy. He's just replaceable and quite frankly been s* for several years.
tell me who is replacing his defensive pressure and tackling. Fitzgerald doesnt have the speed, tackling techniqie, overhead marking, or foot skills of Sparrow so we can stop that right there.

Crazy that you still cant admit your wrong despite evidence that Sparrow was clearly being played out of position his entire career. This year has proved that to be the case beyond any doubt.

Look, it's VFL v AFL so not a totally fair comparison, but:

Disposals
Fitzy - 34.6
Sparrow - 20.4

Tackles
Fitzy - 5.9
Sparrow - 6.2

Clearances
Fitzy - 6.6
Sparrow - 4.9

Marks
Fitzy - 6.9
Sparrow - 2.6

Contested Marks
Fitzy - 0.5
Sparrow - 0.0

Goals
Fitzy - 0.5
Sparrow - 0.5

Now, we don't have kicking quality stats for VFL, but what rubbish you talking about Sparrow's foot skills.

Kicking efficiency 55% (3rd worst for us)
Kick retention -5.5 (24th out of 32 players who have played)

He had a few good games which has hopefully started a bidding war between Crows and Power which might net us a solid compo. Fitz can walk into his role on more than half the salary. Untried at the level, but let's not pretend Sparrow has been anything other than bog ordinary for 4 years or so. Vines on the sidelines. Langford and Lindsay potential mid time and Fitz coming in means that Sparrow is not irreplaceable. His kicking is atrocious. No big loss there. His defensive work is solid. But so is Viney's. Tholstrup could play a mid defensive role. Fitz has been solid in this area at VFL. Sparrow is one of the most replaceable guys on our list.

I would like to keep Sparrow. He's a leader and is in the peak age group which is a weakness of our list.

The compo claims here have got a bit out of control. I've mentioned the details in another post, but long story short, we would be incredibly lucky to get band 1.5 (end of first round), with band 2 more likely. Neither SA team are paying him more than 900k.

The weird thing is, I know we drafted Joel Fitzgerald, but I keep thinking that his name is Fred Rodriguez.

Melbourne midfielder Tom Sparrow has hit pause on talks as a return home to South Australia becomes a possibility.

Sparrow has hit the pause button on contract talks until the bye but the Demons are still very much in the picture for the South Australian.

He has been keen to continue his strong form playing as an inside mid getting quality game time in that position for the first time after the departure of Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

The 26-year-old has been linked to South Australia after growing up in the Adelaide Hills, with Adelaide in an aggressive mode for player acquisition.

But it is Port Adelaide which is chasing him harder given they are likely to lose restricted free agent Zak Butters to a Melbourne-based club.

He would be an ideal transition runner and hard-tackling mid to play alongside Jason Horne-Francis and Connor Rozee next year and can select his club of choice given his unrestricted status.

But Melbourne is prepared to reward him financially and he has a Melbourne-based girlfriend so doesn’t seem desperate to leave the Demons or the city of Melbourne.

Sparrow has averaged 6.2 tackles a game to go with 20 possessions and 4.9 clearances in a new-look midfield with Kysaiah Pickett, Jack Steele and Caleb Windsor.

Melbourne is well aware of his position and keen to re-sign him immediately.

And while he has notably refused to commit his future to the club, he is playing in the position where he was drafted and will secure a huge pay rise to stay at the club.
