Zac Bailey and Lachie Neale should be our prime targets
Both won’t cost picks and are bona fide A graders
Lewis and Butts we could have a crack but no loss
Keep our first round pick

Hopefully our war chest is deep

Lewis is more consistently reliable than McStay when he plays but that is very inconsistent. I'm not an Amartey fan, but he'd give us something different in that he can hold separation on the lead - so it'd depend on what we wanted to do regarding our forward line.

The last time we played a 100% lead up forward was the Peter McKenna era and though it looked pretty and we won lots of games in the H&A....in finals we fell to pressure and that style doesn't hold up in those big pressure games. Amartey doesn't suit our contested, accountable and conscientious systems...he's a lightweight Jesse White.

Please NO to Amartey.

2 minimum. He really should be a rookie listed player.

Might not go to the Rookie Draft as a Team could easily pick him after we Did because of his Upside

Or even get Picked before our 1 rookie pick

Was Dunstall a lead up forward?

it was holding up pretty well in the 1970 Grand Final until Tuddy knocked him out

I think Zac Bailey is the cream on the cake. Love him as a player but not the right time for us.

Lachie Neale yes - would transform our centre clearances. Short term fix.

Mitch Lewis - was a fan a few years ago but too many injuries and don't think he is good enough.

Butts not sure.

Do we really need a top quality expensive defender when we are at system based? Surely we can find our next Howe or Frampton without it costing too much.

As opposed to when Pendlebury was drafted, which was admittedly before some of his teammates were born, Collingwood built a team of elite talent young around him. Daisy Thomas, Steele Sidebottom, Travis Cloke, Ben Reid and Nathan Brown were a generation of elite players all drafted in a tight window.

Without wishing to trawl over old ground involving the Pies, unwise list management decisions – almost invariably involving the always risky idea of trading current and or future first round picks – have left them without the sort of generation of young players around Daicos that Pendlebury enjoyed
The club has said henceforth they want to keep their early draft picks and where possible get in earlier in drafts while using free agency and only trading for players with later picks. This is a belated but correct approach and should right the wrong-headed approach of the club summed up by the “show me players not picks” comment of their coach Craig McRae.

I would be disappointed if the club did not explore the possibility of recruiting Jed Walter from the Suns. I know that he is still pretty much untried & so is a work-in-progress but I think think that he went at Number 3 in his AFL National draft year. He must have shown a lot of talent in his junior years. Anyway let's see which way the recruiters pivot going forward.

Howes, Cochrane, TJ, really bullish on Howes..
I think we just keep developing within.
I'm a yes for Butts if he doesn't cost the earth.
Take the best available tall/intercepting defender with our 2nd pick at this year's draft.
Agree on Neale, 3 year deal, it'll take at least $1M a season to get him across.

Yeah those couple of teens picks we’ve traded recently would def have netted us generational superstars
I respect your opinion on this Stormsky but I think this response is too simplistic IMO

Even if we only go as far back as the Daicos F1 trade, combined with other picks for JFN etc, good selections would have given us the opportunity to build an excellent core
  • Shannahan / Morris as KPP
  • mid options that we could have grafted from the trading or using of pick 2 / players available in teens / 20s (even the dogs picked a great mid at 45)

I’m not saying we would have hit with those picks but there’s def 2 ways of looking at our list management
like it or not, we topped up and didn’t win a flag post 2023 and that’s all the record books will show

Both ways of approaching strategy post 2023 are valid viewpoints IMO

I don't have strong views on Walter, but a high draft pick KPF could also end up being Josh Schache or Jack Watts - spending top 10 draft picks on key forwards is fraught with danger and the Suns took that punt.

Approach with caution.

According to Twomey/Gettable, Gold Coast are into Zach Merrett now....

If that comes to fruition, that would be Merrett, Petracca, Rioli and Noble in the space of 24 months....After suffering from salary cap pressure only 2 years ago.

Surely that means Rowell is looking to go home early... Otherwise how are they doing it.

EDIT: Was abit wishy washy from Cal, nothing concrete.

The varied philosophies on this is really interesting.

Some feel that they should only pick Key Forwards in the top 10 and not later as there is a greater success rate for that particular position.

Others feel that you you should take a quality mid in the top 10 ahead of a Key Forward because they are more likely to make it over any other position.

I live a big pack crashing, contested marking, goal kicking forward, but also love a fast, creative goal kicking midfielder.

You can also draft a key forward in the first round and have them end up as an AA back (Darcy Moore) or draft a first found key defender that ends up as a key forward (Aaron Naughton).

My theory is that the Tiges are paying Rioli - hence such a high trade price. Suspect the same with a chunk of Trac's salary.

End of the day everything is with hindsight. Outside of the HDM pick (which all facts points to a f up) everyone is critical all with the benefit of hindsight. That said I def don’t value teens picks as high as some on here. If we’d used the picks instead of taking Houston and Schultz realistically based off hits in drafts suggests we’d be worse off. The media beat up is a load of bs.
