I dont really care about the age demographic of our list, as long as we are contending. List balance in terms of position depth is massively crucial. Whether its through youth, fringe players from other lists or vfl . Who cares. We need to ensure thats right

We have a generational talent in Nick and need to be getting the most out of him.

Seems the media concern has crept into our posters on this board.

No way the dogs could afford to pay him anywhere near what the Pies could.

You think we've got a stack more room in the salary cap than the Dogs over the next few years? I sort of agree that we will, but I also don't feel the Dogs would be maxxing out their cap right now either.

If we can’t get in an A-grader during the trade period, let’s not settle for less and go to the draft and draft a Toby Greene clone in Arki Butler.

It’s amazing that for a coach who has done the development work with players is so frightened to play young players over aging one who aren’t holding up their end of the bargain.

If we tumble down the table…it’ll almost become untenable that he will need to prioritise younger guys over the older types and make the necessary tough calls needed.

It’s a massive next 4-6 week block that will determine the fate of our season and list build from here

It’s not the same though when you’re picking in the 30s and 40s….

We are talking having access to much earlier top end talent than just that

Sure we can still strike gold but the first rounders are going to be critical to get right.

Other fringe player is a Connor Stone who never seems to get a go at GWS.
In terms of Butters your looking at 2026 +27 1sts McCreery and maybe a Degoey (thou they'd want someone younger) maybe a Long
Can we please just keep our future first for once. this is what everyone gets worked up about the lack of young talent we’ve drafted.

Not huge top end talent and a different recruiting boss this time

ā€˜Huge top end talent’ comes from top 8 max 10 picks if you take out lucky strikes. I wouldn’t say we’ve done poorly with them at all, we just haven’t had any outside of our f/s unless you’re suggesting we tank. I think expecting to strike gold from late first rounders or second rounders is just hindsight based cherry picking.

You can argue Freeman at the edges of that top 10 was a poor pick. I don’t think you can criticise our picking of Jordy, Stevo, Scharenberg (unless you think his ACL were linked to his draft year foot issues).

This is also what’s nuts about the ā€˜doomer narrative’. How else do you want us to get access to elite talent especially elite midfield talent that is highly visible in junior leagues, except to be shit? We haven’t been shit enough, and if we now are, then their wish has come through and they will get your high picks.

Even in hindsight I’m ok with the Schultz price (and stood strong through his poor first year and now most would agree) and ok with the Houston price (it’s dirt cheap with our 25 finishing position). The only one to me that stands out as a major blunder was the Beams trade where red flags were everywhere and we overpaid for pretty much zero output. But based on what we’ve heard this one is not on Hine but on Eddie.

For the record I don’t think we’ll be bad enough to access the real top end of the draft this year either unless we get creative with trading. I put our ceiling as a ladder finish at 7-8 this year and it’s looking like it with a likely 7-12 finish. I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade this year unlike last and yes, maybe with future picks with the risk they entail. But this time I think we’ll continue to be smart about age profile and trade them for players <25.

Fly is aware West is due for selection given he was a recent emergency. So which others is he ignoring who deserve selection and who do they replace.

So you’re advocating tanking?

You could easily omit 4-5 names from the senior team on either system balance or form.

And if we are going to limp into the middle tier of the ladder you may as well prioritise some other players for these 4-5 spots.

West, Parker, Reef(obviously once fully cleared from injury), Hayes (hopefully he stays in the team), Anderson (we can’t win any contested ball and offers more than Long does who is wasting midfield minutes at moment.
Even Swadling changes up the profile of the team compared to what we have out there currently.

I’ve been saying our balance in team is way out but the couch is going tried and tested …problem is it isn’t improving and I don’t think it will …it could get away from us very quickly and we will lose valuable time if we don’t act quicker than what we are and make some statements and put selection pressure on some ā€œseniorā€ players

Our list is in a serious pickle.

In the next 3 seasons we will say goodbye to

Pendles
Sidebottom
Crisp
Howe
Elliot
Degoey
Moore?
Membrey
Cameron?
McStay

Unfortunately we don’t have anything promising coming through under 22.

It’ll be intesting the strategy we go with.

Unfortunately no currency to get some picks in either.
