I remember when I only lurked, JDG had no value, no place at Collingwood and had to be kicked out. 🤣
It was so obvious we should've traded JDG to the Saints, when they offered a great deal.

So who are the FA's available at the end of the year we can target to revamp our sluggish midfield? I know of Butters, King... Does Rowell's 2-year extension run out this year or next?

end of 2027 for rowell. He only re-signed june last year, so its been less than a year.

Unfortunately for us the list demographic of others will probably make for a more attractive proposition for the 4 big names being sought after.

As it is 2 of those in King and Humphrey already play for the most talented young list in the competition, so the pull of home would need to be big to depart when the Premiership window is only now just opening.

Bailey already has 2 flags and could have a 3rd by years end. He wouldn't be moving for a chance at success so could be motivated if the money is significantly greater than the Brisbane offer. He's a year older than Butters so the financial side may play a slightly larger role in his decision. Money or mates for Bailey.

Butters will depart you sense but everyone sees the Bulldogs being the clear favourite for his signature. Geelong second.

Perhaps it's better we let others concentrate on them and we go all in on the likes of Walter who could find himself stuck behind King, JUH and Read at years end. Gold Coast in general will have players lacking opportunity due to the stock piling of academy talent.

The rebuild is happening.

Core of blokes should be around for they next crack if we can draft recruit well.

Quaynor
Houston
Maynard
Perryman
Schultz
McCreery
Steele
Lipinski

Maybe
Moore
Cameron

Get rid of the rest.

But Walter would be a trade, and probably cost us two first rounders, and we desperately need first round talent in the door after the avoidance of first round picks over the last decade.

There will be young players at clubs who can’t get games because they’ll be behind serious players in their teams already.

They will be able to be picked up cheap only in trade terms if we can offer them game time that can help us fast track some influx of youth on top of hitting the draft.

A guy like Jed Walter for example …we may be targeting King but he is one we should be putting work into and will come cheap end of season as he is frozen out of a suns team that is litterally stacked and they haven’t even used JUH yet either

No he won’t.
He will barely play barring injury.

Out of contract too…
He will be a cheap trade because his value will be incredibly low when he plays a faaark all amount of games in a team that has King, Read and JUH (yet to feature)

They still wouldn't let him go for less than a first rounder. Market forces will push his price that high at least.

The 'incredibly low value' pick would have been JUH - it's a shame that we don't seem to be a destination for these reclamation projects (Oliver, Petraca as well).

He won’t be worth a first playing in the QAFL weekly

Market forces also determined this

These “reclamation projects” wanted out of Vic - we were never a chance.

What i said was no one is giving juh a big contract after he spent the year sitting on the sidelines on full pay going clubbing because he didn’t like the coach. That is very obvious.

I never said he wouldn’t get a pay rise if he starts playing well, he’s on minimum chips right now
Yes he is. Which is why I said he will put more pressure on their cap if he stays focused (like he is he is to date up there) and starts playing like we know he can.

There is no chance he goes for anything above a top 10 pick at the very least.

He was pick 3 in the 2023 draft, our only chance to land a GC key forward is if GC don't match the bid on King or JUH wants to come home.

In saying that we could tank, finish bottom of the ladder and walk him through to the preseason draft.

A few things I noticed last night, not that I'm an expert but I have watched a lot of footy in my forty years, not just Collingwood.
We were slow. That will happen with an aging list. On the flipside, our youngsters have some speed but lack the footy experience, experience comes from playing consistently, not one in, three out.
Our forward are undersized or inexperienced. McStay at 195cm is not a Key Forward. Thillthorpe is a monster, we need a Thillthorpe. Billy is 177cm...more of a forward pocket type he plays as a tall because we have no choice.
Buller has played 12 games in total. He has size, but needs game time. Schulz is 178cm, Membrey 188cm, there's no way we could have competed with the likes of Butts, Worrell and Murray, all at 195cm and 26 or under, we didn't have the foot speed in our forward half either, Shooter, Membs and Billy are not fast on their feet. Most team have a group of tall defenders that will expose our forward line every week.
The Crow's defence was tall, fast, agile and damaging by foot, we couldn't keep up.

Reality is, we're going to lose a lot of experience at the end of the year, we might be in world of hurt for a couple of years and I'm concerned about our lack of depth, can't see HDM, Ryan, Jiath making it. We have a plethora of mids and small forwards, all of whom have little to no senior experience.
I'd like to see Howes, Steene, West, Smit and Cochran, all talls, get blooded early this year and give them at least 10 games each. Keep Buller in for as long as as possible, reward the newbies for their VFL form if it's warranted and when it comes to drafting, trades etc....key forward, Key defender and speed, speed being dependent on recent draftees.

Butters would be a great get, but if he has no-one to kick it too, it's pointless.

We also need to sort out the Bobby Hill situation sooner rather than later. Must be hard turning up to work everyday on peanuts when a bloke is earning good coin for not showing up.

We have plenty of speed HH, Allan Reef all won the sprint in their draft year - we just need them to start playing well.
What's your thoughts on these 3, NS?

  • HH has the speed and smarts but does he get it enough / drift in and out of games?
  • Allan: is he a finished product of does he need to play the majority of the season to find his feet / fit?
  • Reef: the great unknown. Do you think he's truly a defender or a mid or ??

The much lauded Logan Morris who so many lament we failed to pick - is only 191cms. McStay is definitely KPF size. His form is another issue.

Lot of IFs here. aren't there?

- Howes: I like how he takes the ball at its highest point
If we could make him into a contributing KPP he could be a real asset.
He's a bit under the radar as pick 15 in mid-season draft

- Steene
Can he put on the strength needed for the 1s?
He's decent lead and mark and hopefully become an around the ground ruckman as well

- West
Will he develop?
Will he put on heaps of muscle, keep his ability to get in front of/ hold space?

- Smit
This dude could be anything If he develops game smarts and one-grab abilities
I'd love him as an aggressive ruck / then chop out as KPD / KPF

- Cochran
Will he end up like Moore or Cox (Essendon)?
Boom or bust
or does he become a hybrid wing/mid/kpp?

At pick 47 don’t really think you can label Cochran a “bust” if he doesn’t make it. Extremely speculative pick at best, like most of the kids we have

I think he'll be a good third tall defender.
