I don't think De Goey is the norm. His body has betrayed him constantly, and his off-field indiscretions weren't great either (the hand injury, for example). I'd trade 2 firsts for a De Goey that could stay healthy
I would too, particularly if next year’s is compromised.

I’d also consider trading up next years draft. Would Tassie like an extra pick in 2028 for one of their early picks in 2027?

NOW: Play West, Harrison, Steel, Hayes, Anderson, Steene, Allen for big chunks of the season of the year. Maybe Swadling/Prindable towards the end if they do well in vfl.

I would be content (happier) to finish 12th playing the kids, then 8th giving Lipinski, Membrey, McStay AND Elliot for 20+ games each.

POST SEASON:
  • Offer Butters $2m x 8 years, heavily front ended.
  • Offer King $1.6m x 8 years, heavily front ended.
  • Increase Nicks wage to $2m.

Do the Richmond model (pay 5 big stars). We will literally have no one else to pay in 3 years.
We need to play youth but only on merit. I don't want to continue recycling Allen in/out when he has done nothing to deserve selection. We still need to be competitive because getting RFA/ FA's of note depends on us being competitive.

Swadling is going to be good but his debut won’t be like Anderson’s. He is far less physically ready. Anderson is 22yo and has played extensively against men.
Hmmm. The club just selected a very small Hayes. Not for the first time. Roan ain’t built. As an outside player it could happen. Maybe Lippa injured.

Richmond also drafted almost all of those stars, including the biggest of them all.

Butters and King will most likely cost significant draft capital, which would undermine any chance of a recovery if they get injured or don't produce immediately.

Increasing Nick's wage is nonsensical. He's under contract for another 3 years; if it's about money for him (and to be crystal clear, I'm not saying that it is) then at some point we will need to make a hard, dispassionate decision that maximises the return and preserves list/cap integrity.

The better play would be to target players whose clubs are unwilling to match, so as to avoid the draft penalty. Add established players to the list this off season without breaking the bank or the draft hand, draft high and keep some cap space for a big fish when we think we're contending again.

Agree with this. All the great teams draft their stars including the Pies. Butters and King will cost too much and I don't think it'll get us a premiership. Even including them we don't have enough talent/depth to cover Pendles, Howe, Elliot, Sidey. Also JDG is on his last legs as he's now 30 and injury is catching up with him. Hell Darcy Moore is 30 and getting more and more injured.

Our spine is horrible and we continue to trade for players like Buller that never really make it.

So we'll lose a lot of talent, and have no generational type players coming through (Except Daicos of course).

I don't think we can do a mini rebuild with this list, it's a major one.

All teams go through it, but I'd hate to always be struggling to make the top 10. Would rather be Richmond and have a clean out and hit the draft hard.

I don't think we're in Richmond rebuild territory, or that we'll necessarily get there. Acquisitions like Perryman, Schultz and Houston should keep us from reaching those levels (on top of talent like Naicos, Jaicos, McCreery, IQ etc). That's not to say we don't have deficiencies, as we clearly do, but I'm not convinced they're as bad as some are making them out to be.

I thought in some ways we stole 2023 and were obligated to see how far we could take the list. Realistically, the mini rebuild should've commenced in 2024, but it's difficult to make a call like that after a premiership the season prior.

We’ve played Allan, Buller, Parker, Hayes, Steene, Anderson, Steele. Long continues to get games. Let’s not act like we aren’t playing new/younger players
Giving the young guys exposure when they earn it and it’ll keep happening all season. It’s the best part so far about this season.

Last year we brought in 4 young players via draft. Think we will need to bring in even more in this year's period , before tassie suck the talent pool dry for the next 4-5 years.

I wonder if we can package up Schultz and Houston for Noble, Joe Richards and Ginnivan?
I was never a fan of trading ginni but he's gone now and he won't be coming back. You can still admire him from a distance or forget him, which is what I'm doing.

See what you did there.

Still feel Houston was worth targeting. Just don't think our coaching staff have found a way to extract his AA form.
It’s looking like a bust at this stage. Keeping Noble would have been the smart play.

The only thing I’d say to this Manic is to never again tell or allude to the press how we feel about a player - those convos happen behind closed doors
If the club needed to move Ginni on, fine, but let’s get value please. That trade was weak as p…

The other part is which established players are pushed out as we go through the season.
There will be more than enough soft tissue injuries for our ageing team to allow for lots of young players.

True it isn't looking good at this stage. Hindsight wise keeping noble would have been the smarter choice , but I think he was set on leaving because the 2023 GF omission still stings him.
Don't think he has forgiven the club for that, so I doubt we would have been able to keep him even if we were keen on it.

Maybe.
Like everyone, I was excited to get Dan. But he has been a huge disappointment. I’d look at moving him on at the end of the year.

Honestly we are better of keeping him. Not sure we will be able to recoup the first rounder we gave up for him.

Maybe we can hoodwink Carlton into trading for him.

I’d take a second rounder for him.
