For those worried about a leading forward.
One piece of play from the 2023 PF is forever etched in my memory.
Dan charging out from FF and Nick hitting him on the chest.
Dan was fit and full of confidence, (then did his knee ☹️).

I’d just like to point out that McStay was going at 1.43 goals a game in 2023 whether right now he’s currently at 1.67 a game.

If he keeps his current scoring rate up he’s on track for his best season goal kicking wise.

This stat is going to piss people off massively

Yeah. He's ****ing up too much with the ball but he's been fine. It's always the way that what's viewed as a good game where you did your job in a win is viewed as inadequate in a loss. He and Membrey are fine ok AFL players individually - but collectively they're yuk. Shooter is a lot better than fine, but as a forward alongside those 2, he adds to the general yuk. It's a really bad mix - all grunt with no class.

Attempting to take off the Collingwood blinders for one second, how many here actually believe we're a genuine chance of getting Butters?

Because I'm not sure how we could pull it off.

The only possible scenario I see Port Adelaide even remotely entertaining (and not necessarily accepting), is:

  • This year's first, whatever that may be
  • Next year's first
  • Beau McCreery

The reason I say this is because I expect Port to match any offer we throw at Zac, forcing us to trade.

I don't think Hawthorn and the Bulldogs will have any better draft hand than we would? (unless I'm forgetting something) given they will both most likely finish higher than us this year.

We also seemingly have more cap space than both.

Realistically I think you are bang on with that trade.

  • If Port finish bottom 4 (which looked likely before this week), then I think they would accept the top 4 compo pick, because it is simply better then 3 late first rounders, especially this year for Port with Cochrane being a likely number 1 pick.
  • If Port finish above 12th, then I think they match, and trade will be something like this years first, next years first, mccreery and maybe another second.

I understand some of the external doom and gloom around our list, but the prospect of having 2 of the top 3-4 mids in the league playing together for the next 8+ years is an enticicing prospect.

If you have the stars in place, then its easier to recruit role players/support players around this (which we have a good history of doing).

We should also have the most cap room.

We should be in it upto our eyeballs.

I think we can get him and no matter what people say, the trade would get done if he nominated us.

It's just going to be so dependent on how we perform this season. If we fail to even win a final then we won't be an exciting proposition. Whereas Hawthorn are probably one good midfielder away from being heavy favourites.

I genuinely think we're going to get Ben King. Even though it contradicts what I said above, he could propel us to contenders again as it's a glaring weakness for us. Even with Butters, who are we kicking to?

If Butters declares he wants to come to us we’d be negligent not to move heaven and earth to facilitate it. I’ve got a bad feeling the Geelong flogs will perfectly time this as a Dangerfield replacement and actually get stronger. **** I’m sick of those campaigners

I'm kinda loving the idea of Ben King this year and Matt Rowell next year, as mentioned by others.

Of course that's going to be pretty bloody difficult to pull off, but Rowell came pretty close to signing with us in the last offseason and he'd only be 26 at the start of 2028.

It's an epic recruiting 1-2 punch that would leave us free to work on bringing in a key defender and maybe supplement the midfield in other ways.

It would be a lot easier if GCS went back to being awful again 😄

I maintain that Ben King won't really solve much for us, especially in the short term.

Ben King has 24 goals this season in a fairly decent forward line being fed by one of the better midfields in the comp

Dan McStay is on 10 goals (which could have easily been 15 or so) in a dysfunctional forward line that is receiving horrid service from the midfield and even further our transition from defence.

I'd wager that if you put McStay in the Gold Coast forward line right now, he really wouldn't be that far off Ben King's goal total.

I don't think Ben King really does much for us right now with how we're playing. Especially for what he'd cost us.

Zac Butters does SO much more for us and his inclusion would have a knock on effect on the forward line anyway. We have Charlie West coming through, Zac McCarthy who hopefully makes it and just recruited Buller.

What do we have in the youth department in the midfield? Nick? pinch hitting Beau? Yeah, Anderson looks like he could be something and so do Swadling and Prindable. But as of this moment, Nick is it. Long has dropped off massively and while he's young I think we've seen the best of what Long has to offer and even then we don't see it all that consistently.

Zac Butters should be soooooo much more a priority for us than King.

You just can’t imagine these three guys chaining possessions between them to generate a score. Just couldn’t happen at AFL level.

Good on Checkers but did we drop the ball on this one too?
He’s a good fit for them. But this suggests he’s playing like Josh Treacy. His stats are on par with mcstay. My view is the club can’t win. Trying to get younger, moves one on, now the media query it. If he’d stayed, he’d be included in the oldies the media talk about
