The full strength top team fell in against a Collingwood team with 8 players with less than 20 games experience.

Perhaps Fly has good reason to be optimistic about our season.
Yes, we only lost by 6 points to Sydney, and there were positives given how inexperienced the side was.

But that is still one game. A narrow loss does not necessarily prove we are close to contending. If we played Sydney ten times, we may well lose most of them. It shows we can be competitive on the night, not that we are a genuine premiership threat.

That is why I would lean toward giving games to younger players rather than relying on a 35-year-old backup ruck. Cox might make us marginally better this week, but exposing Smit, Steene, or others gives us a clearer view of what we actually have going forward.

We could have still given games to Steene ahead of Cox and kept him as a back up just as Freo have done.

Personally I would have liked to have kept him for this particular reason and the changes in the ruck rules do suit him.

I’m not much of a VFL watcher, and although I’d be happy to test Smit in the ruck, many are saying he is not ready yet and will still need some development

Lol we havent recruited a star mid or forward in forever it seems (does treloar qualify?).... Geelong recruited multiple-Coleman medalist Cameron, then one Brownlow contender in Smith, and are about to follow it up with another Brownlow contender in Butters 2 years later. Just crazy.

That Danger kid went ok as well...

Moving on Mason Cox only to give a list spot (even for six months) to a bloke who's failed to make it twice and isn't a particularly good ruckman... It's a pass from me, as knowing our system is such a low tier justification for giving someone a list spot as far as I'm concerned.

I'd go best available first pick in MSD, then the best available ruck with the second pick, preferably with some upside/room for growth. If O'Bree thinks Teakle is the best ruck available in the country, so be it. But if he is, that's an indictment on the nation's ruck stocks.

It's not hindsight. I could not believe we gave away a bloke who cost us peanuts and was willing to play back up all season when we were one injury away from a ruck crisis. Now it's happened. I will never understand their thinking. Keeping Cox would in no way have inhibited Steene's position as our first choice as back up to DC. Now we have to grab a ruckman -do they look at Teakle as a short-term fix for the remainder of the season when we had premiership ruckman in the wings.
This is just completely untrue. If Cox stayed, Steene likely wouldn't have even debuted this year. Cox was holding him back. Don't be disingenuous.

I know it makes you feel clever but attempting to state what you have is not doing what you think it's doing.

People said the same about Checkers.

Then he got injured & no one has mentioned it since 😆

I think the coaches and players need to be about winning and thus you have to pick your best team - or there's going to be cultural issues. Thus list mmt cleared our depth and ensured that kids would be picked as part of that best team. I think it was the way to go.

A simple view. I like the number of rucks being discussed. The likely hood of multiple options at our pick appeals. I like that Teakle is close to home. Teakle at 205cm is ball park.

Why don't we move to Phillip Island to attract the surfers, fisherman and farmers? Those ****ers won't be able to compete when we add in penguins as well.

O'Bree being relatively new makes it interesting too. We don't have a lot of info to base a prediction on. And we don't know how much he'll be guided by short term needs.

I’d do it. What better way to help coach players than to have Pendles on the ground for 15 games of the year
I agree.

To me he has earnt the right to determine when time is called. Particularly given where the list appears to be at, as it doesn't seem to me as if Pendles playing on would prevent us from achieving something significant.

When Steele and Howes arrived in the MSD O’Bree’s after draft comments were he expected both to play seniors that year. But they were young and he thought were good short term. He was right Steele played in that year. Howes may just be a better draft choice long term. I love project players but I don’t feel more is good for our list balance. A 26-30 ruck feels good.

who would he be keeping out?
Also, the other question could be who are we saying goodbye to if Pendles stays on.
I believe we need to make 3 changes to the primary list with a few to likely come off their rookie contracts along with possibly drafting in some more youth.

Going to be a watch and see regarding list management.

I think it's also fair to say that the value Pendlebury provides fair outweighs the value of the kids we currently have on the list playing over him.

Player ratings obviously not everything, but they’re a generally helpful reflection of who is good. Pendlebury is the 22nd player in the entire comp in that stat this year

This is an impression and hard to measure. When Pendles didn’t play previously I felt we lost form. Didn’t move or structure up correctly. This year we are playing more youngsters and we are not dropping off badly. Pendles on field leading/coaching has huge.

You're looking at this the wrong way. Keeping Cox would've meant 1 less list spot which meant we wouldn't have been able to take Angus Anderson with our last pick in the National Draft.

We ONLY have a pick for a back up ruck in the mid season because Steene got injured. Which is the whole point of a mid seasons draft, to cover for these types of injuries.
