This is bang on.Do you know why North didn't bid on Nick? Because there wasn't a pick there to be absorbed, if there was they would have done it because when has another club done Collingwood a favour? The answer is never. Clubs with good F/S and nga's have ALWAYS moved the pick, that was how the rules worked then, those are the facts and they are incontrovertible, I'm not surprised people don't understand that a Callaghan and Nick scenario was never going to happen and didn't.
North were 100% committed to JHF not only for optics, though it was a safe statement to make because they knew they didn't need to bid on anyone because neither Collingwood or Western Bulldogs had a pick in the top 3. If the Dogs had pick 2, North would've bid on Darcy.
As a result, North made JHF feel good about himself (a lot of good that did) while not pissing off other clubs.
