Do you know why North didn't bid on Nick? Because there wasn't a pick there to be absorbed, if there was they would have done it because when has another club done Collingwood a favour? The answer is never. Clubs with good F/S and nga's have ALWAYS moved the pick, that was how the rules worked then, those are the facts and they are incontrovertible, I'm not surprised people don't understand that a Callaghan and Nick scenario was never going to happen and didn't.
This is bang on.

North were 100% committed to JHF not only for optics, though it was a safe statement to make because they knew they didn't need to bid on anyone because neither Collingwood or Western Bulldogs had a pick in the top 3. If the Dogs had pick 2, North would've bid on Darcy.

As a result, North made JHF feel good about himself (a lot of good that did) while not pissing off other clubs.

You really do have a penchant for making stuff up and claiming it as the truth…
.
I dislike Carl as much as anyone on here, but I also think he has the right of it. I just don’t think it’s realistic to think North would have been that generous. I’d be focusing more on what could have been if we’d have been able to trade pick 2 in the 2021 trade period.

Um, that's what happened!! Making stuff up are the Harry Hindsights who tell us all of these riches could have been obtained if something was done differently. Essendon had to trade out of a draft after a club threatened to take Kako and then the pick would have gone and they got nothing extra for it. If the temptation is removed then a club can't be tempted. If we were at 2 North would have bid and then it's gone, the subsequent picks haven't worked out but it was the smart play and only play, every club did it and without fail, those are just the facts. Thinking a club would given Collingwood a free hit requires some real mental gymnastics.

Some people just don't like the truth, I love it!

Not much, if you're on the clock that's more of a hostage situation than a negotiation.

Hence why I said trade period. We may not have got full tote odds, but we might have been able to get a future 1st from North or another of the cellar dwellers to speed up their rebuild because there would have been competition. Who knows it might have given us access to Cadman, Wardlaw or Humphrey. Although we’d have probably taken Tsatas in that scenario…

I’m guessing we thought we would have a mid to late teens pick and thought the value of turning it into two picks in the 30’s was better value.

Reality is we could have done that on draft night anyway. We panicked thinking that we didn’t have enough points for Nick.

Just for clarification I think it was 2 picks in the early 20’s but we kept trading them back to various clubs to get more future picks

There is no reality in which we would have had one option re pick 2
Sure, if North bid on Naicos we’d have had a future top 10 pick swap organised in advance.
If Roos pass, we’d use it
The only truth is we got pathetic value for it trading in a year in advance

The value was terrible, trading future picks is always a risk. I did not expect the team to have the performance drop that it did. The club must make decisions without any hindsight. I am more forgiving because the club was making decisions based upon expecting good performance.

I can’t cop this when they are waiting / willing to use F1 to grab picks in the 20s
There is always a strategy that must be allowed for. I would not have traded Ollie Henry for what Geelong coughed up. In return Mitchell was a crucial part of 16. Paid too much for Shultz but he was the best player available at the time and we were topping up post GF. Two picks in the 20s for a first rounder I would take the 1st rounder very quickly. I value the first rounder much more. The club didn’t expect the first rounder to be so early.

Here is a bi-annual reminder that there is no way whatsoever that we would have ended up with Nick and Callaghan in 2021. You are applying after the fact data (no one bidding until pick 4) to a new untested scenario (us holding pick 2 and a bunch of crap picks and assuming NM just let us walk out with two top 3 players for the price of half of one). There is a close to 100% guarantee we would match so they would have known this. Plus add the fact there would have been pressure from AFL house to make this ‘right’ to avoid the scandals. Think Ashcroft brothers level of complaints x1000.

Instead of trying to rewrite history be happy we got our generational f/s at a discount before the current rules came in making them a much pricier pick.

Lol we havent recruited a star mid or forward in forever it seems (does treloar qualify?).... Geelong recruited multiple-Coleman medalist Cameron, then one Brownlow contender in Smith, and are about to follow it up with another Brownlow contender in Butters 2 years later. Just crazy.
If Smith qualifies given he was a) coming off a ACL and b) not the player then that he is now, then Adams & Treloar both count comfortably

Can't believe I am the first person but...

Can we please have Mason Cox back????

It's not hindsight. I could not believe we gave away a bloke who cost us peanuts and was willing to play back up all season when we were one injury away from a ruck crisis. Now it's happened. I will never understand their thinking. Keeping Cox would in no way have inhibited Steene's position as our first choice as back up to DC. Now we have to grab a ruckman -do they look at Teakle as a short-term fix for the remainder of the season when we had premiership ruckman in the wings.

With the devastating news about Steeney, this now gives us 2 picks in the MSD. We could still look at a key forward, along with a secondary athletic ruckman.
I never want to see Buller in the ruck again....🤮

100% have to pick a Ruckman

I see they had their eyes on one just this week.

So many ramifications from Steene's knee injury.

We have 2 Picks so we can still draft a Gus/Roan type

It was the right decision to let him go, even if he is your favourite
