Was there something in the water where the whole comp was looking at GWS mids with rose-coloured glasses. So many left and never fully delivered on what was expected of them.
Everyone wanted to have the relative success we did with Treloar and Adams. Essendon tried and failed with Shiel & Smith, Carlton have tried and failed with a million others.

Just wondering what kind of financial offer would we have to offer butters to blow away everyone else and make it hard for port to match it at all.

Then again it probably would be bordering on salary cap malpractice.

North of $2.5m pa and front ended. I wouldn’t even bother considering this because Port could probably even match that although it may cost them Georgiades.

You couldn't offer enough. Its not about the $$ for port. They offered him the leagues's largest contract to stay last year. They have the money. Everyone knows this will be a trade.

It was just a thought exercise. Is there a limit to how much port could potentially offer ?

We are going to have a lot of veteran salaries on expiring contracts come off our books soon, we could really front end the contract.

In the 2.5M mark I reckon. I don't think its something we would be willing to do.
There was an article last year if he took up their short 2 year offer, it would be the biggest deal in AFL history.

We’ve tried the Irish experiment with some success and the American one too. Personally, I’d like to see some more indigenous talent at Collingwood.

But does anyone else think we should try either the Irish or American track again?
I'd prefer more indigenous talent.

Definitely Irish. I'm so envious of the Cats Irish recruits.

Cal Twomey on Gettable has us linked to Jed Walter? Essendon also.

Wasn’t aware we were ever interested.
Have said before that l much prefer Jed Walter to King. Would cost us a whole lot less than King and he is much more physical than King is. With Jamara, Read and King in the side,he may struggle to get consistent games, and would be easier to get.

Max Gruzewski (GWS) and Jed Walter (Suns) are talented key position players not getting enough opportunity at their current clubs. Both are better than Buller and probably West too. I think they're gettable, without breaking the bank. I'd love us to go after BOTH of them. And throw the kitchen sink at Butters too, even though I think we're near-zero chance of landing him.

Neither do much of anything without ball in hand, and do not get much of the football. Not sure they're as high potential as they've been hyped up to be, particularly in the case of Walter. Gruzewski is crafty but not that good

Well that would be good. We could use it as a ploy to get Georgiades. Having said that, beware of Greeks bearing gifts,,HaaHaaa. Any good Italians we could get. The food's better IMO. (and my mum's)

There's always Frankie Raso's son from Port Melbourne

On what metric is Gruzewski better then West?

Gruzewski is good at marking, and thats about it. He is also in his 5th year, and cant solidify his spot in the team, and in most cases, gets pushed out for Riccardi.

West on the other hand, is pretty much an all round forward. Good at marking on the lead or in contested situations, great kicking for goal and around the ground, and is very good when the ball is on the ground, and most importantly, has great footy smarts. Unlucky not to play more in his his year, and will get a bunch of games this year.

I'd have few people full time exploring overseas talent everywhere to be honest especially given we have the money and I dont think AFL is hard to pick up. The one place in Europe I have been to that stood out massively for athletes was Marseille, France they have athletes playing sports in the street that look like they should be on a AFL list. No surprise Zidane and Cantona come from there and many others.
