Yep. For AFL debuts over the Fly years we rank 11th.

No surprises -
Full rebuilders debut the most.
Contenders debut the least.

For new recruits (club change) over that time we're behind only Port, WCE and Carlt. Combined Coll is 8th on list turnover. Volume is not an issue.

Pretty good for a club made up of senior citizens and coached by a bloke who never plays kids

Not sure about Lachie
Great player .. exactly what we need in the middle
But
Age
Cost ?

Interesting time ahead if he wants to come
Age shouldn’t be a barrier given the trade capital to acquire him is zero.

Does the club need a big fish that hurts the salary balance? If that big fish was King the cost would be huge and a top end midfielder would still be required. Our veteran replacements of Shultz, Perryman, Houston are playing. We need a class midfielder and pace more than a ruck etc.

Kane Cornes strongly supported the 2023 trade that brought Lachie Schultz from Fremantle to Collingwood, calling it a "perfect" move and "huge get". He praised Schultz's all-around game, stating on AFL Trade Radio in October 2023 that Schultz might immediately become the Magpies' best forward.

We do get big fish.

I think they’re happy to let Merrett go if they will land Humphrey …don’t you think?
Of course, I was taking exception to the notion that they would land both. Absolutely not going to happen under any circumstance.

Lachie Neale would be an exceptional get IF he is truly interested in getting to Collingwood. Costs nothing and at 32, while he is older he certainly looks like he has 3-4 years left in him.

It’s a big IF though. I won’t believe it’s a story just because Tom Morris said so on SEN. These journos are just guessing as well.

It’s unlikely (despite me obviously hoping for it) that we will get a restricted FA or contracted gun end of this year, notwithstanding our salary cap position as reported. That’s simply because we don’t have the draft collateral to give away for the likes of Butters, Humphrey or Z Bailey.

The only practical way I see it happening is we are able to successfully trade out a few players will currency in the system, but our track record in extracting a fair pound of flesh is poor. Also, who on our list can get us a first rounder (other than ND who is untouchable)? Maybe Jordy gets us one first rounder at best. Bobby even though he is worth two first rounders alone I think unfortunately won’t be valued highly by other clubs given he’s been off the park so long. The other candidates (Beau, Ed Allan, etc.) will get us nothing. That’s just being pragmatic I feel

Neale is 33 and would definitely not cost nothing. I don't think he would sign for anything under $900k

In what world is Jordy( even though he’s had a good patch) or Bobby worth 1 less alone 2 ( for the latter ) first rounders.

They didn’t necessarily say that. Looks like they acknowledge that Jordy is a first rounder at best but we wouldn’t get it and Bobby at his best may have snagged 2 x first rounders (don’t disagree with this) but that’s unlikely.

Thank you PN, for interpreting my post correctly and not immediately reacting with a “you are so obviously stupid” reply which seems to be common go-to on here.

And to the comment re Neale’s salary, yeh of course I was taking about trade value. At 900K he’d still be a pretty good get IMO

Agree. I feel like we’re a few pieces away from giving it a real crack. Pay the overs and don’t die wondering.

What draft capital do the dogs, hawks or cats have? They will likely have even less than us. Not saying I’m interested in butters at all as I wouldn’t give up whats needed. But the clubs on the race have SFA as well.

Even hawks being linked to Humphries. Good luck with late teens picks. They will need to give up a good player as well

I like Neale as a RFA. With Brisbanes strong midfield and salary cap you would hope there is no match. On salary cost Adelaide are apparently a player. The market for his services may be hot. The positive impact upon Nick could be immense. Our clearance issues could be improved. A big Melbourne club with the potential for a high profile may agree now and into the future financially. At his age a three-four year contract with triggers would be the max.

Just establishing now since he'll likely be a big part of discussion in this thread for the remainder of the year - it's Humphrey, not Humphries. As in, Humphrey B. Bear

Humphries is Lawson, who plays for Geelong

No matchy matchy, Magpie Lachie is a UFA.

Haven't analysed what draft capital the other clubs have. Only looked at what we have, and I don't think it'll suffice. Our problem also will be we don't have the list depth to be able to afford to give up our few good players.

Having said that, stranger things have happened when a player nominates a preferred club. Deals generally (not always) tend to get done. Perhaps with future picks. So the challenge will also be convincing some of these young guns that they should pick the Pies over Hawks or Geelong etc. We definitely have the brand power, but they might see the other clubs as being closer to or in Geelong's case, perennially close to a premiership.

He’s been wildly inconsistent in his seniors games. Long stints goalless and such etc.

I have to say though, much less injury prone than his brother Zach at Essendon
long stints goalless is almost a little forgiving given where WestCoast have been over the last couple of years and Waterman is the main KPF.
