You'll find WA have the most parochial supporters in the country, not just with WCE and Freo, but with WA supporters of other non WA teams that typically run in the family. Also most here who play the 'second team' card have already chosen freo as that team. I guarantee a third team here would fail.So who will support the 3rd team in Perth.
Aren't almost all Perth people already supporting
West Coast or Fremantle?
Are there any WAFL clubs that would be aligned with the new team.
Had you been near fumes in poorly ventilated area when you wrote this?Don't see how you couldn't use the name 'Perth' don't think you have copyright in the name of a city. Obviously couldn't call the side the Perth Demons or use Perth's existing colours without consent but you wouldn't anyway as their name clashes with Melbourne and their colours clash with Essendon.
Excluding the Fremantle teams and Peel, which have a clear affiliation with Fremantle, the relevant WAFL teams are as follows:
Claremont is (in my opinion) the best club in the WAFL but suffers from an AFL elevation perspective on the basis that its logo is identical to Carlton's, its name is the Tigers and it is based in the heart of the West Coast supporting Western-suburbs. However it is a strong and proud club and would carry at least 4,000 supporters into the AFL from inception you would think.
East Perth Royals is a strong club historically with cool colours and a strong brand. Benefits from a unique name and colour scheme that would suit well in the AFL. Home games at Leederville Oval place it in West Coast supporting territory, but that doesn't really distinguish them from anything else in Perth as basically everywhere outside of Fremantle can be considered the same.
West Perth Falcons are a historically strong club also, but currently not as strong / popular. Unique colour scheme and name that would elevate to AFL level without issue (albeit ugly) and based the furthest away from the Inner City / Western Suburbs that is the Eagles true heart land give it strong geographical points. However, the Joondalup Area is a s**t hole full of English people, South Africans and other migrants that wouldn't necessarily be football converts from day one. However, a region of young families and the AFL thought they could transition Western Sydney to a football state so why wouldn't they try the same here.
Subiaco Lions, the most dominant WAFL side in recent memory with semi-unique colour scheme and jersey design. However, shared name with Brisbane would obviously need to be addressed before AFL promotion. The most cashed-up WAFL club from my understanding so would probably have the strongest impact at AFL level if promoted, however the issue I see is that Subiaco and West Coast are historically closely aligned due to geographical proximity and the shared use of Subiaco oval.
Swan Districts are a proud club, but the least financially and fan supported. Issues with colour scheme and logo which mimic Collingwood make it too difficult to consider a promotion.
Personally I think East Perth or West Perth have the best grounds for a promotion or just name the team Perth and create a unique identity.

What they should do and what they will do are 2 different things.
Such as…
Create an alternate VFL comp (call it Victorian Football Championship or something more snappy) with the traditional clubs that are lost in the shuffle of that bastardised ‘National’ Reserves comp they’ve slapped together (Williamstown, Coburg, Port Melbourne etc) - add in some further regional clubs to broaden the appeal….and move St Kilda/North (don’t mind who really) to this league where they can dominate early doors and win trophies and pack out boutique sized stadiums with their die hards still in tact.
Nobody’s club dies, they can market it as a genuine alternative 2nd tier comp in the biggest footy market in Australia and the national league sheds state/local club to even out the numbers and balance the Vic/Non Vic split at 9-9.

Albury/Wodonga would make more sense, Lavington, Shepparton, Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Benalla not too far away, many from the Riverina would attend, would average around 15k IMO.Canberra, ACT will need to be the next AFL team to even out to 20 teams based on population. It definitely has a larger population in the capital city. Will the AFL expect a brand new shinny stadium there too?
NT cannot host an fulltime AFL team with such a low population and population growth.
Tasmania population 541,071 (Sep 2020) / Hobart Population 206,097 (2016) / Launceston Population 71,980 (2022)
ACT population 431,215 (Sep 2020) / Canberra Population 395,790 (2016)
NT population 246,500 (Sep 2020) / Darwin Population 132,045 (2016)
I think the 21st team should be the Queanbeyan PossumsNo matter where it goes, I don't think any Team 20 will have to jump through as many hoops as Tasmania.
The AFL didn't want to expand yet. It set impossible conditions, put any failure on the government, and Tassie still came through. On the plus side, it's set the new Tasmania team up for success.
Manuka Oval is already quite centrally placed. It's probably not possible to get a better place for an AFL stadium, so it'll only be upgrades, which will be cheaper. Bellerive is, from my understanding, quite a pain to get to, so a new stadium was more necessary.
Also worth noting Canberra population stats often exclude our NSW suburbs, so the metro population of Canberra is about another Darwin's worth.
One based on land above the Brisbane line (as opposed to the Brisbane Lions). What about a northern team
Broome Darwin Cairns?
Gold Coast has more people (and still rapidly growing) than all of Tasmania and double the amount of Auskick kids.Bit like the Gold Coast huh?
Why on earth would the sun's get any more support in Norrhwrn Queensland than on the Gold Coast? So too the Suns dropping the Gold Coast and playing more games out of northern QLD and NT
Why on earth would the sun's get any more support in Norrhwrn Queensland than on the Gold Coast?
I do think they should play their 2 Darwin games up in NQ instead but dropping gold coast is silly

We don’t want a bye. Also Tassie is different it’s a footy area there will be more buy in from fans. Also reinvigorating grass roots footy there should see them producing a critical mass of local talent that they can build aroundI still cannot for the life of me understand why a 20th team is in dicussion.
Let's get one good 19th team in place, performing well, and let the ripples around the competition die down before we add #20, please. For the love of god, did we learn nothing from the debacle that was the launch of Gold Coast and GWS?
No one likes Freo other than Freo fans. You'll find WA have the most parochial supporters in the country, not just with WCE and Freo, but with WA supporters of other non WA teams that typically run in the family. I'll admit I haven't followed the WAFL closely in the last couple of years, a little out of touch.Had you been near fumes in poorly ventilated area when you wrote this?
Here's two of the mammoth errors in your piece:
- Swan Districts are the most supported WAFL club and have been very stable financially over the past decade (and unlike many WAFL clubs, have money reserves).
- West Perth also very popular. Colour scheme unique?....Think Melbourne already have the red and blue market sewn up in the AFL.
I hope it's Canberra, but I think NZ should have a hard look in.
Would love to have a 10/11am match timeslot; could have a full day of 4 back to back matches, starting in NZ and ending in Perth.
But I dream.
Caught the most recent "Eddie and Jimmy" podcast on youtube.
If anyone wants to see what a puffed-up loon Eddie McGuire is just check it out. His views on running the AFL are basically return it to the VFL on crack.
Just completely money and TV ratings obsessed with zero vision on how to grow a sport nationwide.
Dinosaurs like him should never be allowed near running a competition. He's a parochial club President and that's it.
Bartel raised some very good points and was just steamrolled by tomato head at every turn. Can't see them remaining together for long - you can sense the growing animosity between them. But worth a(n) (ironic) laugh.

And yet he has long backed 20 teams and spoke in that interview about putting many more games in Canberra, nth Qld and Darwin
Contributed more to the game than the last 5 Carlton presidents

And as to West Perth's colours, they're very different to Melbournes. While technically 'red' and 'blue', they're completely different types.
Do the below look anything alike?

There's zero need for another stadium if it's a Perth based team.SA, they'll promote one of their SANFL teams like they mostly did with Port, their premier will throw a heap of cash at the idea too like he did with Gather Round.
I think it really depends on potentially having another stadium built like with Tasmania and WA premier McGowan wont throw a cent at the idea.
