Player assessment

Represented SA at the NAB AFL U18 Championships as a 19-year-old. He is a left footed, speedy medium forward with neat disposal skills and excellent agility. His 2.76 seconds for the 20m sprint highlighted his outstanding pace. He was the quickest player tested at the Draft Combine this year.

Wellsy has gone tall so far. And a good lefty with clean disposal.

I was watching Wojinski videos today and sad that next season may be his last, an absolute joy to watch when he takes the game on.

Hopefully Murdoch can replace wojo in the sense that when he gets the ball in space every supporter thinks the same thing... RUN!

Herald Sun had him at 24 in Phantom Draft so could be a bargain!

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

I was lucky enough to pick him for our 48. Have a look at the vid @ 1.10. To me its what he does here that sold himself to AFL selectors. He can do the lead and mark like a taller player but has the speed to play wide on the flanks.
Short term he may even be ideal coverage for the Menzel position as he is a mature age good.
Long term who knows but that pace at that size is nice attribute , a bit one sided(typical leftie) but very nice addition to our list imo and to our group of sa players.. Has a brother coming thru too

Edit:

Heres the stuff I posted in the draft thread........

Jordan Murdoch,

Remember watching him in the state game and to be honest thought he was little taller than he is. Played as a 19 year old lead up forward but at 189 he is probably too small for the role he played at the champs in the AFL. Yet
his vid does show the champs stuff at the end but also show some middle of the ground stuff too. Yes he is a bit one sided , typical Leftie. But I really liked was the play at 1.10 missed the mark recovered then took on two defenders.Thats skill that is adaptable to AFL imo.

Then I read this:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsartic...3/default.aspx
Glenelg forward Jordan Murdoch got the South Australian screening session off to a flying start with a time of 2.76s in the 20m sprint test - a mark fractionally outside Joel Wilkinson's record of 2.75s set just last year.

"Murdoch, who couldn't test in Melbourne because his side was in a final, was absolutely eye catching," Sheehan said.

"His first sprint attempt nearly blew the record away. It looked quick and it turned out to be very quick."

Draft Board has him going :

SnoopDog P67
# 67 Collingwood – Jordan Murdoch (Glenelg / 188 / 85 / 92)
Gone very unheralded this year and one of my real favourites for this draft. I think he drops off a bit because he is over age (19yo). Kicked 25 goals in 6 U18 games and as a result got to see some Reserves and Senior action as well. Just looks a natural footballer and has terrific height and speed and is a one toucher which makes him a standout. Has played closer to goal than he will at AFL level where he is likely to be a HF type but could conceivably push up to a wing as well. Lovely kick and has really good kick penetration. He could well go a lot higher than this.
AFL Comparison – Like a HF flank version of Leon Cameron
Roughie – Steve Verrier

Nightmare P71
#71 Fremantle – Jordan Murdoch (SA – Fwd/KPF)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 81kg, DOB: 23/03/1992
Recruited from: Glenelg
Style: 45-rookie
Player comparison:
Range:
Profile: Undersized key position forward. Bit of a leading forward, but has some attributes which indicate he could be a draft chance even though he is that year older. Has great speed for someone of his size. Nice left foot on him. Tackling ability good.

Chris25 P51
#51 Port Adelaide - Jordan Murdoch (189cm forward - Glenelg)
Another underrated player for mine. Although I was somewhat surprised he got a Draft Combine invite, I always saw him as very draftable. I really like him, and he is a bit of a deceiving player in my opinion. Whenever I see him I think he is just a big lump of a kid, but he actually moves well for someone with his body type and would be an option around the CHF spot. Very quick and very underrated. Look out for his brother next year too. AFL Comparison: Aaron Edwards.
...

A 189 kid who is that quick and has shown footy ability , played some seniors. Would not be surprised if his name pops up a little earlier in this type of draft. Might be a chance for our pick @48

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

A couple of really nice chase downs in that video. He is very determined not to let the ball out of the forward line.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

Nice, looks the goods. Fantastic kick (on the left), good tackling and has some nice speed. Good to see him take the game on and be able to kick decently while at pace.

Looks heavier then 80kg, will fill out nicely I think. Very happy!

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

He's a keeper eh?

Plenty of toe and a nice left foot. Great pass to a leading forward while under pressure in that clip; and burns them off into the F50 as well. Also seems he will do his bit defensively - nice chase downs.

This kids a good get and cheap at that.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

Geez he's quick! Pretty happy with this pick, hopefully a longer term prospect as a high half forward/wingman.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

I am so stoked Jordan got drafted to Geelong, I may not sleep tonight, but to be honest to everyone and I believe he was drafted about right. The potential is there, if he improves on his weaknesses, he well might become the percieved steel(Wells Slider) that he appears to be. All the weapons of AFL are there he can kick, he is bloody fast, he can tackle, and I know the little shit is bloody strong, the greatest upside of Jordan, is that he is intelligent, which will make him very coachable, which for the Cats and Jordan will make it possible for him to reach his next goal, an AFL game.. Good luck mate..

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

Great pick up. I watched him play his first League game for Glenelg this year and was right up to it. As others have said explosive pace and raking left foot.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

Quigley does it again, guy rates our choices:

Pick 37 – St Kilda

The Saints got in Peake and Lovett because they perceived that they needed to inject some pace into their side. The problem now is that with the likes of Peake, Polo, Gilbert and Gram they have some appalling users of the ball. The Saints with this pick have the ability I believe to inject not only one of the quickest guys ever tested but also a pretty good ball user. He will play out on a wing and is a tackler that would blend in well into their defensive structure. This kid could be exceptionally dangerous and there is a lot to like about him for the Saints.

Jordan Murdoch
DOB 23/3/92 Ht 189 Wt 81

Murdoch is another of the plethora of guys this year who are just a little bit too short to be a KP but are not really mids either. Murdoch looks like he has grown a couple of centimetres this year but at 19 it’s probably unlikely he is going to get much bigger. I do think however that he has some potential to develop into a tall, speedy wing.

The thing that really sets Murdoch apart from the crowd is his pace and teams are always trying to add pace to their sides. His elite speed will get him drafted. Murdoch was involved in the SANFL finals and missed the Combine so he had to attend the State Screening where he ripped out a 2.76 20m time just outside the record set my Wilkinsen last year. From watching him in games I wouldn’t have thought he was quite that quick but he certainly does show really nice game speed at times and I have not seen him run down when at full gallop.

A player I think Murdoch could end up emulating is Issac Smith of the Hawks. Murdoch plays predominantly as a forward but he has shown some skills further up the ground. He is a left footer who delivers really nicely into the forward 50 and has excellent touch on his passes. He has good penetration on his kicking and he had several goals at the Champs from the 50 or just outside. He can fade them a little when he leans back for distance but there is nothing that worries me in that regard.

When he is up the ground he is more of a receiver than a ball winner and when he does get in the clinches his hands are not particularly quick. He tends to circle the ball a bit, not attacking the pill with his pace as you would like to see. When he receives it he is often a little flat footed but he has excellent agility and he can avoid tackles with that and his pace. He seems pretty clean when he receives the ball and I haven’t seen much to indicate that he is prone to fumbling. When he gets some space he is difficult to contain because of his pace and agility. He also has a pretty fair baulk that allows him to get around defenders.

Where he is exceptional is as a open field tackler and he is one of the best available this year. He has good size, long arms and he is very hard to get around. He maintains balance very well and watches the players core and is rarely fooled by baulks and even when he is his pace and agility allow him to recover quickly. His tackling technique is pretty good although he is not a thumper more of a wrap up style.

Up forward he is quite a good leader able to create space on the lead. If there is one criticism of what I have seen is that he probably doesn’t do it enough or repeat the effort. He seems to have a pretty good football brain and usually leads to good spaces and when he uses his pace he seems to create separation with ease in dangerous spots. He is not particularly strong overhead and tends to take most of his marks out in front of himself. If the ball is coming in onto his head he can get a little under the ball and not protect the drop zone. As mentioned above he is a pretty reasonable shot for goal.

What I would like to see from him is to improve his endurance. Once he does that I think it would open the game up for him a lot as a wingman in the Smith mould. At the moment he fades in and out of games and lacks the tank to work hard enough to get the possessions he needs to show him at his best. He has a very tantilising skill set and I am sure someone will take him this year.

"Pendlebury long kick inside 50 but a terrific one hander by Smedts who hand passes to Murdoch and he's away, look at the speed, he breaks one tackle...bounces, they aren't going to catch him...a 2nd bounce and then kicks a lonnggggg raking 60 metre drop punt to the 50 metre line and Hawkins!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a mark"

Music to my eyes that paragraph. I just can't help but feel so positive that the future will be bright. Wells seems to always pick up gems that blossom in their second season. Maybe this current drop of '11 draftees will play an important role in our 2013 premiership year just like our '09 draftees did? :D

Or it could be....

Pendlebury long kick inside 50 but a terrific one hander by Smedts who just fails to hold on...the ball falls to Murdoch who fumbles the ball close to the boundary....but whats this?...someone has jumped the fence...its bobbycatsfanme!!...picks it up on the run...a brilliant blind turn past a flat footed Swan...steadies........lines it up from 65 metres...........

What more can you say!!!!!!

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 48 - Jordan Murdoch

Very quick off the mark, he will beat his opponent 99 times out of 100 on the lead or out of a pack. Crisp skills, prefers to straighten on his left but has class. X-factor oozes off of him, has the tools to really blossom into a dangerous player. Can kick a bag but also play midfield in time.

Bit of a cross between Porplyzia and Menzel.
