But AFL.com.au has confirmed that the Hawks are seeking to exploit an impasse in St Kilda's negotiations with Essendon, with the Saints so far refusing to meet the Bombers' demand of pick No.5 for Carlisle.

The Hawks are attempting to snare Carlisle in a three-way deal that, according to reports, would see:

  • Hawthorn parts with pick No.18 and Anderson for Carlisle;
  • North receives Anderson and Essendon's pick No.41 in exchange for pick No.15, and,
  • Essendon receives picks No.15 and 18 for Carlisle and pick No.41.
The three clubs have agreed to the deal in principle but it is far from over the line.

Carlisle, who is overseas on holiday, is understood to be prepared to move to the Hawks, but only in the event that St Kilda is unable to broker a trade with Essendon.

Anderson is believed to be open to a move to Arden Street after visiting the club last week.

But the opportunity-starved young Hawk has been heavily courted by rival clubs since the Grand Final and would have other options if the Hawthorn-Essendon-North deal falls over.

The decision now facing the Saints could be simple – trade pick No.5 to Essendon or wave goodbye to Carlisle.

At the very least, it seems the Saints will have to come up with a deal that nets the Bombers a better return than picks No.15 and 18.

St Kilda has been exploring possible trades with other clubs involving pick No.5 where the Saints would acquire a lower first-round pick, say around No.9-12, and another pick or player.

The Saints had been hoping to use that lower first-round pick as the key plank of a trade with the Bombers, but the Hawthorn-brokered three-way deal has increased this strategy's degree of difficulty markedly.

If Carlisle has genuinely said that he'll go to Hawthorn if St Kilda won't give us a fair deal, then mad respect to him.

Would mean, at least from my view, that he just wants a fresh start. After what he's been through can't blame him for that, especially since he'll get to play in his preferred backman position at either Hawthorn or St Kilda.

Even if it screws saints over I gotta agree, clearly has some mates at the club still.

Guys, question.

We trade carlisle for 14 and 18
Or trade him for pick 5 and we send pick 25 back. (This is what the saints are apparently pushing now)

Its halarious seeing the turn of events today. We went from having no power to having it all, with the player whos leaving us giving the power to us. What a day. And we traded melksham for 25. lol!!!
Now all we need is luey to be at the dons and holy shit what a thursday..

Whilst ultimately I don't want to make the Hawks stronger, I'm absolutely stoked that there's now a valid alternative to St Kilda.

The club needs to say to St Kilda "We can't keep holding up North Melbourne and Hawthorn so you have 24 hours to counter the deal. The ball is firmly in your court".

If 24 hours passes, the deal is made.

Going to the 3x reigning premiers. Top bloke.

TO be fair, we didn't have any leverage when it was a one horse race, now that there's competition, it's an entirely different scenario.

It was never going to be just a 1 horse race. There is no doubt we would have been sounding out a few other clubs as well.

5 and 41 for Carlisle?

I don't believe the saints were playing hardball when they were saying we won't give up pick five for him. Our list needs an elite mid a lot more than a key defender.

The best thing the saints might be able to do now is just withdraw from the race.

Look, I can't say I'm thrilled that Hawthorn of all clubs could be the big winners out of this, ie landing a ready-made KPP who wants a fresh start. That said, it has swung the balance of power firmly back in Essendon's favour and ruled out the sly-dog campaigner trick of the PSD walk.

They really should hold out for pick 5 straight up, as I'd be amazed if St Kilda will better the picks Hawthorn/North have offered, given the only players thrown out there have been Hickey and Ross.

your priorities are misplaced

But but but PSD

My read on this new development from Jakes perspective is he just wants a trade to be done, so he can enjoy the rest of his holiday.

Is there a time frame for the Saints to cough up a fair deal here? I reckon their could be.

What would you rather pick 5 or 15 & 18?

Would prefer 5 but not going to complain if it is 15 and 18.
5 picks in the top 25 has a nice ring to it.

If we can get Aish for pick 18 and 25, then certainly pick 15 + 18.

Aish and two first rounders? Absolutely.

Look at it this way. It is essentially 18 + Melksham for Aish...

Since there is not much between 5 and 15 in this year's draft, we can get a slider (I'm hoping Curnow slides to us).
