Saunders speciality is soft tissue injuries, blaming him for an ankle fracture would be about as relevant as blaming the boot studder.
He was high performance manager. I’m not blaming him for the injury, I’m playing him for not picking it up. He has a history of mid-diagnoses with our players.

Now you mention it, who is our boot studder? I firmly believe that whoever he/she is needs to be held liable for something.

#whoisourbootstudder?

Another ankle injury mis-diagnosed by Saunders!! It baffles me how he was so highly rated.
He isn't an ortho specialist.

His expertise is in physiotherapy, so it would be surprising if he was making the calls on surgical treatment recommendations on the likes of Jacobs, Wrighty, etc.

The club wouldn't be that stupid.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of Tef, I'm putting it out there that Goldy will be the Supercoach steal of the year in 2018. Start him in your team and watch everyone else waste a trade to get him in.

You all do realise Goldy was only down on career averages by .4 marks and 1.7 hit outs was up on career disposals .9. Would be fair to say regarding hit outs that he didn't ruck one out. So career wise last year was not as poor as we'd think.

All in all I'd suggest he aint nearly as great as people make him out to be. That isn't a criticism as such by more of an observation.

He was far less aggressive in the contest than previous years.

:thumbsu:

Someone who does know him very well recently had lunch with him and had a long convo with him about his year and where things are at now, both personally and footy wise.

His bitter divorce proceedings were finally settled in September and they'd weighed very very heavily on him for a long time. He said the eventual amicable settlement was "like having the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders!" Whilst not admitting it publically throughout the past period it has really stuffed him emotionally and mentally and you can now rest assured he's as happy as he's been in a very long time.

He also said post season scans on his ankle revealed he'd been playing with a slight fracture for a long time, previously undiagnosed. R & R will sort that out.

I expect we'll see him back to his best next season and it's for these reasons the club feels the same way.

That's great that he has sorted this issue and the injury was diagnosed. Gives a bit of optimism. That said he probably could have used an extended break to deal with that stuff.

Go Godly Goldy

The issue is he wasn’t moving around the ground at all

They are.

So he wasn't moving around but had more disposals than his career average, maybe we should tell all of our players not to move. You guys make up far too many excuses for our players. Sound a bit like our coaching department.

Most disposal he's averaged in a season is 14, last season 13.

All I'm asking for him to do is slap one of his multiples across the face of the smaller opposition players. He has it in him to throw his weight around and be confident with his contested marking, we've all seen it. He did it against geelong in the 2014 final. He did it in 2015. Then he stopped. I saw motlop out mark him for christ sake...

Bring back 2015 goldy.

I read on this forum that he had “metres gained” at a ridiculously low numbers this year

Interesting

I think he did have another level.

The guy kicked 5 goals on Gawn, won us a final, made an all aust , all in different years.

I do think he's got a couple of ok years to come

Career stats don't give a true picture of his dominant 1.5 years do they?

Kind of. 117.9 in 2017 (mostly injured), 130.0 in 2016 (50% injured), 182.4 in 2015 (AA year). 2.9 tackles in 2017, down from 4.3 in his AA year.

I keep saying this. Good Goldy isn't a physical beast, he's an athletic beast and a better option in open play than most rucks. I can't think of a current ruck who's a clearly better field kick. Maybe Martin? Grundy? If you want him to be a Mumford clone, stop. He isn't. At his best he's a hitout machine (44pg in 2015, 30pg in 2017) who gets on his bike around the ground.

Anyway, fingers crossed for a resurgence. His decline in hitouts surely hasn't helped our disastrous clearance numbers this year.

You've been banging this drum for a while. Can tell you that your view is shared in some some well educated (on this specific topic) circles.
