Season 2011

Franklin had round 11 vs Fremantle at the M.C.G. off with a calf strain.

First game he has missed in the 2011 season and was coming second to Richmond's Riewoldt in the race for the Coleman medal.

Has played 9 games to date.

Kicks: 114
Marks: 60*
Handballs: 73

Tackles: 24

Goals: 35
Behinds: 34

Frees For: 13
Frees Against: 29

* 60 marks for the year to date. Last season took only 100 marks for the year from 18 games so is well on the way to beating that figure.

Franko has had a good strong year, plenty of run, plenty of moving up the field and even into defence to help out and run his opponent around. Even helped out by doing some of the boundary line ruck work when Roughie was left to ruck alone.

Round 21 2011 Season vs Port Adelaide @ the M.C.G.

THIRTY one goals and 15 individual goalkickers represented a great afternoon for Hawthorn on Saturday in its 165-point demolition of Port Adelaide, but the two people who do more than any to drag Hawthorn supporters through the gates provided the bulk of the entertainment.

Lance Franklin finished the day with eight straight goals, equal to his personal best against any team not called Essendon. Cyril Rioli finished the day with six, his personal best against any team in the AFL.

HAWTHORN hasn't given up hope that forward Lance Franklin will be fit for Friday night's knockout final against the Sydney Swans.

The Coleman Medallist hyper-extended his knee during the weekend loss to Geelong.

A FINAL that began with pluck ended in sickening disaster for Hawthorn, when a finals loss was the least of its worries after superstar Lance Buddy Franklin went down late in a match already over with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

Franklin landed from a marking contest late in the last term and his right leg spiked in the ground with his knee locking and hyper-extending. Club officials later said that while the incident looked ugly the initial examination offered some hope that he might have only jarred the knee and avoided the far more serious, and longer-term damage of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which would cost him half of next season.

Season 2011 - The Finals

Buddy progress 'unbelievable'

HAWTHORN forward Lance Franklin has joined his teammates on the training track on Thursday morning and Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson says he will be named for Friday night's semi final against the Sydney Swans.

The Coleman medallist hyper-extended his knee during last week's 31-point loss to Geelong, and had previously been rated only an outside chance of being fit to face the Swans.

Franklin was confident

HAWTHORN star Lance Franklin says he felt confident that he'd be fit to play in the second semi-final against the Sydney Swans as soon the scans on his injured knee showed his ligaments were intact.

A week after appearing set to miss the rest of the season, Franklin completed a miracle recovery when he kicked four goals in the Hawks' 36-point win at the MCG on Friday night.

Hawthorn star Lance Franklin born for the big stage

Jon Ralph From: Herald Sun September 17, 2011 12:06AM

THERE have been bigger and better and more prolific, but has any star ever had a mightier sense of theatre than the great Buddy Franklin?

He has done last-gasp finals winners and game-turning grand final goals, but last night was something else altogether.

Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin
Games: 22
Goals: 82
Sub: on = 0, off = 0
Best and Fairest - 135 votes (4th)
Dreamteam - 1932 points; $394,500 (-$18,300)
Supercoach - 2105 points; $492,600 (+$30,300)

Lance Franklin has capped off another season by winning his second Coleman Medal as he flew to 82 goals for the season, and a staggering career total of 451 goals at just 24 years of age. He is ranked 65 of all time, moving in 35 places from 100 in 2011. With Matthew Pavlich and Nick Riewoldt only a few bags in front of him it puts it into perspective how quickly he is climbing the goal ladder.

He finished 4th in the Peter Crimmins Medal, which was his 5th consecutive top 5 finish in the best and fairest count. He was also named as Full Forward in the All Australian side which was his 3rd All Australian honours.

Franklin was simply exceptional in 2011 as he improved his contested marking, taking clutch grabs consistently for the first time since 2008. It seems he was finally over that thumb injury that has hindered his marking for the last 2 seasons by taking 130 marks for the year. He turned it on again with some exceptional goals and none better than the goal in the dying minutes against Collingwood which almost put Hawthorn into a Grand Final.

Suspension didn’t evade him this year as he was rubbed out for a silly elbow raise in round 13 which was to earn him a week on the sidelines. He would have been a bit nervous after being a surprise leader for a few rounds in the brownlow and finishing 8th overall with 20 votes.

Late in the season he gave the football world a fright when he landed awkwardly in a marking contest. ACL, cracked tibia, amputation - the armchair experts yelled. And we all had a chuckle when Buddy told the media he’d be right to play next week. Well he played alright – he kicked 4 goals!

We look forward to seeing you out there in 2012, please don’t scare me like that again!

Retirement announced.

End of an era. Thanks for the memories Budwah. Especially getting pecked by Hodgey in 2014.

He is a legend of two football clubs

One of them is us and did he give us something to get excited about.

Champion, legend the likes we probably won't see again.

So many highlights

I wish him all the best for a long happy life in retirement

Swans or not, absolute superstar of the game.

One of those rare beasts who completely changed paradigms, a forward can be that big and that agile and fast whilst being a relatively poor mark. Probably the last forward to kick 1000+, and a highlight reel as long as any of the greatest players in the game.

Was a privilege to watch him play, let alone in brown and gold for his best years.

Pardon the interruption.

Both our Clubs were privileged to have Buddy play for us. All living footy fans , from kids through to ancients like me, were lucky to have seen him play.
