Does anyone know why Wiz was subbed? Just a like-for-like?
Watson wont be injured. The sports science guys have a lot of data to optimise output and reduce injury risk. He'd probably have been reaching a peak speed that was slower than his usual so they didnt want to risk injury
Sam said after the game that Wiz was feeling a bit scratchy(?) coming into the game, so the plan was to sub him off early if they could.

I was talking about is kick being ‘legal’ kicking over the line of the mark - see the post I was replying to, not whether the mark was in play, but I reckon I’ll go with the umpires rather than a supporter from Bay 26.
I just threw in a comment in that thread as I hadn’t seen a mention in any other comment and reading threads in the Faraday Cage of the MCG is difficult. The field umpire was correct in lining up Kozzie and it was a helluva kick but the boundary ump got it wrong. Bay 26 supporter was in perfect position, he wasn’t.

Looked pretty out from where I was sitting too, and I had a solid view from Ponsford L2, right behind the opposite side point post

Still going with the umpires rather fans in the stands.

Geelong took well over 30 marks in their D50 today. Having 4 talls negates their 1 wood, guys like Stewart can't peel off and neither can Henry. Think you will find it's 1 team Mitch is thinking about when it comes to where this setup could work very effectively. Blicavs would have to play key back so Stewart can do what he normally does. H2H with this setup it matches up very well if we were to meet in finals. Just need Weds in there as well to throw another problem for them to solve.

Would love to hear wizards thoughts on being subbed yesterday

For those who are disappointed with the 6-goal win, it might be worth noting that after round 5, Melbourne have been very competitive, only losing two games by more than five goals - both to us.
Good post. Melbourne's strength is their midfield and backline. They'd have won plenty more games if they had a better forwardline.

They also seem to have implemented a more aggressive ball movement style since sacking Goodwin. They scored so freely agains the Dogs last week and almost sunk their season. They tried the same against us but our backline just stonewalled them.

It was a quality and controlled performance from us, bar the last 4 minutes when we let them kick 20 points.

Unlike you, I will not accept a culture of mediocrity!

Hahaha

Good to see you are still grumpy over the years.

I’ve been spoilt and lucky since the 1980s. I can’t complain.

Reality stings though. We’ve been watching footy for years like the maniacs we are, you can’t possibly argue that we’ve beaten anyone this season, but for a declining Collingwood, we’ve been shabby, and we can perform much much better.

also with those very short kicks just inside 50m against the Pies last week.

If a team like the Cats has talls back waiting for the long high ball then why kick it to them?

It worked the last 8-10 minutes because we released the pressure valve across the ground. All their best passages of play happened right at the end. Everything before that was us giving them the ball for them to score. Thats what makes me confident against the teams that move the ball aggressively aka Bulldogs and Cats we can hold them up effectively so they don't pile scores on.

We probably let them get those 3 goals so they can snowball into next week and do the Pies for us. Long term strategy.

Any long-term members here go along to the club function at the game?
I was invited but am overseas and couldn't attend.

I would love a report on what they did and what it was like?

Have enjoyed how Sam has gotten this team to dig in and fight hard for the right to feature in September, especially when the chips are down with Day, Weddle injured. They’ve got some belief. 4 talls is deadly , can’t cover them all.

That attack on the ball and pressure on the opposition in the past 2 weeks will beat most sides.

We played better last year except for that terrible patch at the start
No we didn't we took the comp by surprise. The opposition have had time to analyse our deficiencies and they have used them against us. We have adapted in season and kept winning. Its much more meritorious when ure expected to win and u do

Hey posters, my brilliant brain cannot stop thinking about Dylan moores "touched"gesture

Its actually dumb how the commentators brand it as a "honest guy" moment

I think Dylan's trying to say by using the touched gesture is to his own teammates saying this might get overturned so be prepared to get to positions for a kick in.

I just thought it's really dumb how the commentators call it the honesty system.

It was a goal anyway so yeah I dunno, might need a therapist.

Any reason why it couldn't be both?

Yes I think it is, takes time though, probably longer than getting a backline to gel. Gunners is the biggest beneficiary so far, but in other games it will be someone else. Having a forward line full of talented forwards, big and small, who can all kick bags of goals is a wonderful thing. Hard for an opponent to keep them all down, all the time.

Compare the current forward crew to the 2023 side, here is the named forward line we opened the season with against Essendon in that year. Remember, too, they beat us by 59points and how bullish folks were about them.

Blake Hardwick, Jacob Koschitzke, Luke Breust
Chad Wingard, Fergus Greene, Dylan Moore

No comparison really.
This got me thinking about the 2023/24 off season, when we acquired Gunston, Chol, Watson, Dear, Ginnivan and D’Ambrosio (with apologies to McCabe and others who aren’t relevant to this particular conversation).

This year combined they’ve kicked 157 goals. Out of our total of 234. That’s 67%. 2 out of 3 goals we’ve kicked this year weren’t on the park for us 2 years ago!

Now for some caveats etc.

I realise that had we not got all or some of those players we would’ve had others in their place kicking goals, maybe quite a lot. Some might argue Gunston warrants an asterisk because he was ‘returning’ to the club in a unique set of circumstances (doesn’t change the fact we still had to trade for him though). To my surprise I discovered that Mass hasn’t kicked any this season (missed that big one v the Crows a couple of weeks ago) but I still rate his season as good overall (and seemingly building at the right time). And finally Dear has only been on the park the last few weeks.

I’d be really interested if anyone’s got some comparative stuff on this, either in relation to other clubs or our own history?

The 04/05 off season for example when we get Bud, Rough and Jordy Lewis - there must be seasons where they kicked over 200 combined, I’m guessing worth about 70% of our season totals.
