I think it started from people watching him play football. Byrne had great speed, balance and an ability to read the ball in the air. If his body wasn't made of glass he could have been anything. Newman is an honest footballer with an afl body and a reasonable left peg. He will fill a need in 2019.

Yep, Byrne was athletic (if fragile).
But he lacked football nous. Still had a looooong way to go to become a good AFL player.

I like Newman and think he will be good for us, but im still torn about trade tactics in general. Newman is ooc and wanted to come to us, so why are we trading? Nic goes to the PSD and we get our future 4th to trade or use. Same situation with Thurlow to the Swans and GHS to the Suns.

I think from the club's perspective it's probably about getting the deal done with little fuss. Clearly we were keen on Newman, so we're not losing any sleep over the minimal cost, and it ensures we get our man.

Would also have been done in good faith between the clubs I'm sure. We could have waited and got him for nothing, but in the interest of maintaining good relationships we've done the deal so the Swans at least get something.

Just like the Mcadam trade, i think we could have done slightly better. In Mcadams case, i think we should have kept our 5th and given that for Newman.

I have always said, the 'winner' of any trade is the club that gets the main known component of the trade, because of the uncertainty surrounding every other part of the deal.

Gov is very good and walks into any forward line in the league. McAdam looks a good prospect but may never play a game or amount to anything significant. Same can be said for the draft picks we handed over.

We may have paid slight overs but Gov was contracted and we were never getting him for unders. We got our man so I just think it's insignificant to worry about whether we overpaid by a late pick here or there. We got our man.

So not unhappy, i am a little concerned with our lack of draft assets this year aside from pick 1 and next yer only having a 1st and 2 3rds.

I'd like more of a presence in the draft, but wouldn't say I'm concerned. We got our targets (other than Shiel) and retained our first pick in the next two drafts.

That's a tick for me.

Wait and see what happens over the next few weeks, it would not surprise if we move up the order, but think it's a very long shot to suggest we'll downgrade pick 1 now.

We're in a position now where I'd be very comfortable giving up next years first for another pick in the top 10 this year, or the equivalent thereof.

I can’t see SOS looking to trade for a Sydney player in the future and getting a discount because we gave up a 4th for Newman or they have a good relationship.

Would have liked to keep hold of the 5th rounder as I think we have up the 4th because that’s all we had, but I’m splitting hairs here.

Seeing as Freo started with a 1st rounder this year and no 2nd, 3rd or 4th and what they ended up with, maybe I shouldn’t be worried about next year.

It's not about gaining a discount. Rather its more about avoiding creating people related issues that make people human; i.e resentment that may result from feeling as though the other side was totally disinterested in your interests. That's is the biggest hurdle in negotiating ie separating the people issues from the interests.

Have a look at Dodo and McCartney when they sat to lodge paperwork for *heil, they sat at opposite ends and couldn't look at each other; chances are next time they have to deal with each other they'll be hampered to some extent.

I would, and I don't see us finishing last in 2019.

Right now we've got 4 senior spots to fill, likely IMO to be 3 x ND and 1 x DFA.

That being the case I'd gladly give up our first next year for a top 10 pick this year, or picks of equivalent value.

I have always said, if the opportunity is there to trade future picks for current picks, the option should be seriously considered. The benefit of bringing kids into the club a year earlier, usually outweighs the risk of finishing lower than anticipated.

I watched him play plenty of football.

Had some talent and some AFL attributes but I think you're overrating his ability by a fair margin. Game sense was poor and would regularly make poor decisions with the ball. Newman is a step up in every category aside from pace and agility.

It's a moot point now, but I think you're being overly harsh and narrow.

A lot of players can excel in a certain role, where clear parameters or other's leadership assists with good decision making.

Docherty missing stuffed us around last year. A lot of errors from players like Jones and Byrne...as well as the rest of them because we were shocking overall.

Sydney do this to perfection, their backline makes everyone look good, often turning rookies and low picks into a very good defense.

Nic Newman may be very good for us, and I hope he is! But I also have a thought in the back of my mind that the Sydney system, coaching and leadership made him look better than he is.

Don’t know. I think if we’re going to land a really good/experienced player next year, we’re going to need the 2019 pick 1, and probably the 2020 pick1 or one of the younger players.

Yep. Fills a need we've had for a while.

Will need to prove himself as the tough, gritty, relentless backline small we've sorely lacked. Small forwards have killed us for years now.

Hopefully Simmo can teach him some tricks before he strolls off into the sunset.

31 games at the Swans in two seasons is a tick. I saw the highlights Carlton provided. Keeps his eye on the ball. Looks like he doesn’t mind scrapping for the ball. Definitely some flashes of brilliance. There’s something about the way he kicks that makes me wince. He’s hunched and leans over however it certainly travels. A bit like Suckling. My concern is he’s a one sided player. Pet hate of mine.
