Justin McInerney
Sydney Swans youngster Justin McInerney is lightning-quick, an endurance machine and a clean user of the footy who’s best used on a wing or at half-back. The Northern Knights product was called up for his AFL debut against Melbourne at the SCG in Round 4, 2019, and although he wouldn’t feature at the top level again in his first year at the club, he was a stand-out in the NEAFL. McInerney is eyeing more opportunities at senior level in 2020.

Justin McInerney
DOB: 18 August 2000
DEBUT: 2019
DRAFT: #44, 2018 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Banyule (Vic)/Marcellin College (Vic)/Northern U18

Had a big 2nd term, been a mixed bag this season with some of his efforts and disposal but thought he was pretty tidy by foot and gave us good run today. Game changed no doubt when he went off.

People massively underrated his influence on our game. It's huge. He is unreplaceable. Our success in transition is completely built on the back of his line breaking ability.

Like yes I get we have Heeney, warner and Gulden - but they're in the thick of it. Jmac is the outlet and he is elite in that aspect. We severely lacks run and turn into a down the line team without him in it. Regardless of his disposal woes this season, he is the connection between our midfield and forwards. That's why I always say we're a better team with jmac in it even if he's out of 'form'. An out of form jmac is still a necessity.

Sorry for the intrusion. I picked up McInerney in my draft league about 3 months ago because he was starting to put up decent numbers. Up until then I’ve never really paid any attention to him but ever since I had him, I have been keeping a close eye on him.

He’s so impressive. Feel like he’s such an underrated player. His work rate, efficiency, two-way running, ability to kick a goal, everything he does he does well. Sucks to hear about the injury, hopefully it’s not serious and doesn’t impact his pre-season. I’ve become a big fan.

Any update on how the Marcellin Magic Man is progressing with his recovery ?

Sadly these recurring knee injuries could take their toll. Still say he hasn’t been the same since the first knee injury a while back. Next year is make or break for Jmac. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s somewhere else in 2027.

Just a rant because I'm having a coffee on a Saturday morning...

I grew up in Sydney and moved to Melbourne about 25 years ago and I still, to this day, don't understand the Vic obsession with which school a player went to. In Sydney nobody really cares, but in Melbourne it really is a thing.

In fact, one of the many things I dislike about JB's and BT's commentary is that in EVERY game they will mention a school at least once. EACH. Once you have an ear for it, you can't miss it.

Back to my coffee.

There was a story about it the other day about which schools you get drafted from , what a lot of crap
These big schools hand out scholarships to good players who school wise are no good and with respect , an example is a Saints player

Yep. A completely different culture to what i grew up in. Mind you, it's probably not part of NRL commentary because they would always be referring to which year they left school at.

"Great try by Billy Bloggs who, as we know, went all the way through to year 10."

That player went to school with my son Bedders.
You are right but terrific fellow.

there is a theory that says in sydney you ask where they grew up (which gives a pretty good sense of where they went to school and their community), in Melbourne where did you go to school andin adelaide what is your family

Sydney is divided into areas. Each has their own identity. I don't know Melbourne or Adelaide.
Northern Beaches, Northern Suburbs, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, Sutherland Shire, Bankstown and SW, Campbelltown, Western Suburbs. There are more.

Northern Beaches - Rich w***ers
Northern Suburbs - Not as rich w***ers
Inner West - we will be really rich w***ers but we need another generation
Eastern Suburbs - Absolutely filthy rich or just renting
Sutherland Shire - White Australia policy thankyou very much
Bankstown and SW - You work for the man
Campbelltown - You work for the man who works for the man
Western Suburbs - Only if you can afford it or else stay away

You need to be rich to live just about anywhere in Sydney. Huge difference in outlook between Northern Beaches and Suburbs though. I have relatives there. 😂
Was a kid in the Shire, you are so, so right. Moved to the country, then back to the Eastern Suburbs for UniNSW. Then Inner West for 29 years, OS for 4 and now Kiama for 16.
Funny old city.

I rented in the Eastern Suburbs. For about 15 years.
I have sisters in the Shire. It is called The Shire.
Rugby is traditionally Northern suburbs and Inner Eastern Suburbs. Traditionally. But it has expanded.

The introduction of AFL came through school expansion after the Swans Academy got traction.
Heeney was a big part. He was the drawcard.
Every kid wanted to be Heeney and so it goes on.
The rich people want their kids being Heeneys.
Have you ever seen a report card from the Swans Academy? I have. Parents brag about their kids. It's nuts. But it works. Parents want their kids in the academy and playing Aussie rules.

You were right about Sydney is divided into areas.

And being rich is also about getting your kids into the right schools and the right sports.
All schools pretty much offer aussie rules now as a sport.
15 years ago it was zero.

AFL is taking off in Sydney as a result.

Son played Aussie Rules for Wests Juniors the year behind Paul Bevan (great kid) but stopped growing up and grew out instead. 2 years later repping for West Harbour U16 as open side prop at 125kg. 🤯
Rugby was private school, league state school. Rules nowhere.
Wife taught out SW (Fairfield and Green Valley) for her first 15 years, then deputy at Gymea THS. The Shire indeed. All league territory.
Then we headed OS.

Your son must have won a few scrums just on his weight.
I was very fast. I was a greyhound. I played league in the centres and wing. But I was tall and if we got injuries I would go into the second row. I hated it. My ears got ripped off we packed in so tight. It hurt. We practiced it. Even in practice it hurt.
Scrums are not scrums anymore. No one packs in tight like a rugby scrum in leauge. It is a joke.
